Release v0.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Sep 20:19
e8cd694

Highlights

  • Reference list: search, stance filter, expand/collapse all. The list window has a search field (author, year, title; all terms must match), one checkbox per stance, and "Expand all" / "Collapse all". Arrow Right and Arrow Left open and close the focused row.
  • Graph: highlight tags. "Highlight tags" lists every tag in the current scope. Nodes with a selected tag get a ring in the tag's colour: Zotero's colour for coloured tags, otherwise one from a palette without the stance colours. "Only highlighted items and their neighbours" hides the rest, which shows which literature points to, for example, your primary sources. The selection is remembered.
  • Views update right away. When item A gains or loses a reference to B, B's "Referenced by" list and its Ref. (+)/(−) cells update without selecting B again.
  • Leaner plugin. It no longer bundles zotero-plugin-toolkit, which wrapped some of Zotero's own item functions at startup. The XPI shrinks from 140 KB to 117 KB.

Fixes

  • Items in the trash no longer appear as targets in the graph and the list. They come back when restored.
  • Picking a note or attachment as a target now adds a reference to its parent item. Standalone notes and attachments, trashed items and the item itself are skipped.
  • If the highlight behind a PDF anchor has been deleted, the item pane shows "(highlight deleted)" instead of a link that does nothing.
  • The graph's edge-length slider is now saved between sessions.
  • At startup, only items that carry references are loaded to build the index (previously every regular item).

Notes

  • Popups after creating a reference or stripping references from a group copy use Zotero's standard look and no longer show a tick icon.
  • The item-list columns Ref. (+)/(−) now use Zotero 10's registerColumn, with a fallback for Zotero 9.

Compatibility

  • Requires Zotero 9 or 10. The stored data format is unchanged from 0.6.0.

For developers

  • Node 22.18 or newer is required (engines); .nvmrc and CI use Node 24.
  • Debug-log entries now include error messages and stack traces.
  • Item-pane styles live in addon/content/qref.css; stance names come from one table (STANCE_LABEL_KEY).

Release v0.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Sep 19:26

Highlights

  • Zotero 10 support. The plugin now runs on Zotero 9 and 10. Zotero 8 is no longer supported.
  • References into group libraries work on every device. Previously a reference to an item in a group could show "(item not found)" on another computer or for another group member.
  • New icon.

Fixes

  • Group references across devices. Zotero numbers libraries per device, so the stored target library could point to the wrong library elsewhere. References now also store a device-independent library reference. Existing references are found by their item key and upgraded automatically the next time the item's references are saved.
  • No lost edits in the item pane. Changing a stance, page or comment no longer overwrites changes that arrived in the meantime (for example through sync or the PDF reader).
  • No stray highlights. Cancelling the item picker after "Add qualified reference from here…" on a text selection no longer leaves a highlight behind in the PDF.
  • Fewer needless sync uploads. Saving unchanged references no longer rewrites the Extra field.
  • Items deleted while the reference index is being built at startup are no longer indexed.

Compatibility

  • Requires Zotero 9 or 10.
  • The stored data stays readable by 0.5.x. If you use an older plugin version on another device, it still shows the references; the new library reference is re-added when this version saves the item again.

For developers

  • CI runs the test suite against both the released and the beta Zotero and reports the Zotero version.
  • Build target raised to Firefox 140 (the platform of Zotero 9 and 10).

Release v0.5.3

Accessibility

  • The custom dropdowns are now keyboard-operable. The scope switcher in the reference graph and list windows, and the compact stance setter's menu, previously required a mouse: their menu rows are now real buttons, so they can be reached with Tab and activated with Enter, and Escape closes an open menu and returns focus to its trigger.
  • The segmented stance scale now exposes aria-pressed and aria-label on each step, so the active stance is announced by assistive technology.

Documentation

  • Completed third-party licence attribution. The reference-graph bundle includes force-graph and its dependencies (d3 modules, preact, tinycolor2 and others); the bundled licence notices for every one of these packages are now reproduced in THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.md (shipped inside the plugin), alongside the MIT, ISC and BSD-3-Clause licence texts.

Maintenance

  • Resolved all npm audit findings in the development toolchain via dependency overrides (serialize-javascript, diff). Runtime dependencies were already free of known advisories. This affects the build/test tooling only and does not change the shipped plugin.

Release v0.5.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Jul 13:34

Fixes

  • The "Copy qualified references when adding an item to a group library" preference now works. Previously the preference was read from the wrong preference branch (a doubly-prefixed key that never exists), so it always evaluated to off and references were stripped from group copies even when the option was enabled. The failure direction was privacy-safe (references were over-stripped, never leaked), but the opt-in had no effect.

Tests

  • New regression test (test/prefs.test.ts) asserting that the fully-qualified preference lookup resolves the shipped default instead of returning undefined, and documenting the doubly-prefixed failure mode.

Stance setter redesign

  • The stance setter now defaults to a segmented scale (++ + 0 − −− as a connected pill group) instead of a single toggle pill.
  • A new preference, "Compact stance setter (single pill with a menu)", brings back a single-pill style with a dropdown menu for users who prefer a more compact layout.
  • Fixed a layout issue where the stance setter could flow inline next to the referenced item's title instead of appearing on its own line below it.

Robustness

  • getLinks() now logs a warning (with the library ID and item key) when a Reference-Graph line cannot be parsed or does not contain an array, instead of silently discarding it. The corrupted line is left untouched until the next explicit save, making data corruption visible instead of leading to silent data loss on the next edit.

Documentation

  • Updated all in-repo screenshots (item pane, reference list, reference graph, PDF selection popup, settings pane) to reflect the current UI.
  • Documented the new compact stance setter preference in the README.
  • Removed the "repository is private" caveats from the README in preparation for making the repository public; auto-updates and full source browsing will work once the repository's visibility is changed.

Dependencies

  • Updated zotero-plugin-toolkit (5.1.2 → 5.1.4), eslint (10.4.1 → 10.6.0), and prettier (3.8.4 → 3.9.1).

Release v0.5.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Jun 15:09

New features

  • Scope switcher for the Reference Graph and List windows. A new in-window dropdown lets you narrow either view down to a single library, or to a specific collection (including its sub-collections). Selecting a scope rebuilds the graph/list so that only items within that scope, and references where both endpoints fall within it, are shown. Defaults to showing everything across all libraries.
  • Create a qualified reference directly from a PDF text selection. A new button appears in the reader's text-selection popup, letting you anchor a reference straight from a highlighted passage without first creating and right-clicking a separate annotation. This can be toggled off via a new "PDF reader" preference (enabled by default).

Implementation notes

  • The scope dropdown is a custom-built HTML component rather than a native <select>, since the native popup rendered incorrectly inside Zotero's chrome windows.
  • Scoped graph/list data is passed across the window boundary as a JSON string to avoid cross-window object access issues.
  • Creating a reference from a bare text selection generates a proper annotation key before persisting the highlight, fixing an issue where the action would silently fail.

Upgrade

No migration needed. Existing references and annotations are unaffected.
