@JeffreyGbeho JeffreyGbeho released this 08 Sep 23:34

Windows 11 style snap layouts for the Cinnamon desktop.

Drag a window toward the top of the screen and a tab appears showing the layouts
on offer; move onto it and it grows into the full picker. Draw your own zones,
resize tiled neighbours together by dragging the border between them, and save
an arrangement of windows to restore later.

Install

curl -fsSL https://jeffreygbeho.github.io/tilo/tilo-archive-keyring.gpg \
  | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/tilo-archive-keyring.gpg > /dev/null

echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/tilo-archive-keyring.gpg] \
  https://jeffreygbeho.github.io/tilo stable main" \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tilo.list

sudo apt update
sudo apt install tilo

Or install the attached .deb directly:

sudo apt install ./tilo_0.6.1-1_all.deb

Then enable it in Settings > Extensions > Tilo.

What is in this release

  • Snap bar on dragging a window to the top, and the same picker on Super+Z
  • Zone editor on Super+Shift+Z, custom layouts kept between sessions
  • Dragging the border between two tiled windows resizes both
  • Saved arrangements on Super+G, restored onto windows already open
  • Keyboard placement for halves, fill and center, all rebindable

Notes

The package installs files and runs no maintainer script. It does not enable
itself and never writes to org.cinnamon.*, so removing it leaves your
configuration as it was.

Requires Cinnamon 6.0 or later, X11. Tested on Linux Mint 22.1.

Applications that declare resize increments, GNOME Terminal being the usual one,
round their own size down to whole character cells, so up to about 14px is left
at the bottom right of their zone. No window manager can override this.
