Release Notes: Commit Copilot v1.4.0

We are pleased to announce the release of Commit Copilot v1.4.0. This update delivers a major architectural improvement by migrating all Git operations from shell-based command execution to the native VSCode Git API, resulting in better reliability, performance, and cross-platform compatibility.

Key Features

Native VSCode Git API Integration

We have completely refactored the GitOperations class to leveragex the built-in VSCode Git Extension API instead of spawning child_process shell commands.

This architectural shift brings several important benefits:

  • Improved Reliability: By using the GitRepository interface provided by VSCode, the extension no longer depends on parsing raw command-line output, eliminating an entire class of potential errors.
  • Better Cross-Platform Support: Removing direct shell invocations (git diff, git add, git commit, etc.) means the extension no longer needs to worry about platform-specific shell escaping or PATH resolution issues.
  • Tighter VSCode Integration: The extension now communicates through the same Git API that VSCode itself uses, ensuring consistent behavior with the editor's own source control features.

Refined Untracked File Detection

The mechanism for detecting untracked files has been streamlined. Instead of executing git ls-files --others --exclude-standard and parsing its output, the extension now reads directly from the repository's untrackedChanges and workingTreeChanges state. This makes the "Stage & Generate" workflow more responsive and accurate.

Simplified Diff Retrieval & Error Handling

Diff retrieval has been simplified by calling repository.diff() directly through the API. The previous fallback logic that attempted to recover partial output from failed shell commands has been removed in favor of cleaner, more predictable error handling.

Updated README Documentation

The README has been revised to accurately reflect the v1.4.0 changes:

  • Git Requirement: Updated from "Installed and available in your PATH" to "Installed and accessible by VS Code's built-in Git extension", since the extension no longer invokes Git via the command line.
  • Respects Staging: Removed the obsolete reference to git add ., which no longer exists anywhere in the codebase.
  • Ollama Model Names: Corrected model display names to match actual model identifiers ??Llama 3.3 (was Meta-Llama-3), Phi-4 14B (was missing parameter size), and Mistral 7B (was Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.3).
