Transcribbler 0.2.3 (beta)

Pre-release

@github-actions github-actions released this 06 Oct 10:10

Fix for exports from encrypted projects. Projects from earlier versions open unchanged, and affected projects are corrected automatically — no need to import the transcripts again.

Fix

  • Codes in the wrong place in exports: in encrypted projects, plain-text transcripts (.txt) created on Windows were stored with Windows line endings. The app itself was correct, but in exported files (Markdown – coded transcripts, CSV positions and QDPX) each line break shifted the codes by one character. Line endings are now normalised on import and when encrypted transcripts are read.
  • Unencrypted projects on Windows no longer get double line breaks in newly imported .txt files.

Installation

Click the file for your system in the table below (the same files are listed under Assets at the bottom of this page). Step-by-step instructions, including the browser warning on Windows and how to open the unsigned app the first time:

System File
macOS, Apple Silicon (M1 and later) Transcribbler-0.2.3-arm64.dmg
macOS, Intel Transcribbler-0.2.3.dmg
Windows Transcribbler.Setup.0.2.3.exe
Linux Transcribbler-0.2.3.AppImage

The installed app takes up about 2.5 GB on Windows and 1.7 GB on macOS.

Version 0.2.2 added Markdown – coded transcripts (every coded transcript in one file, for reviewing the coding) and a faster first start on Windows.

Transcribbler 0.2.2 (beta)

@github-actions github-actions released this 05 Oct 13:51

New export for reviewing coding, and a faster first start on Windows. Projects from earlier versions open unchanged.

New

  • Markdown – coded transcripts (Export dialogue). With the scope Whole project, every transcript that has annotations is collected in one file: the full text with the codes marked, each speaker turn on its own line, and a summary per transcript with memos and key passages. Overlapping annotations are now shown with all their codes. With Open transcript only, the open transcript is exported as before. Coder names are shown when more than one person has coded a transcript.

Fixes

  • First start on Windows: the app no longer loads the machine-learning libraries at start-up, and it waits longer for the first start. Previously, the very first start could fail with "Could not start the Flask server" while Windows checked the app's files.
  • "1 annotation" is now written in the singular.

Installation

Click the file for your system in the table below (the same files are listed under Assets at the bottom of this page). Step-by-step instructions, including the browser warning on Windows and how to open the unsigned app the first time:

System File
macOS, Apple Silicon (M1 and later) Transcribbler-0.2.2-arm64.dmg
macOS, Intel Transcribbler-0.2.2.dmg
Windows Transcribbler.Setup.0.2.2.exe
Linux Transcribbler-0.2.2.AppImage

The installed app takes up about 2.5 GB on Windows and 1.7 GB on macOS.

Transcribbler 0.2.1 (beta)

Pre-release

@github-actions github-actions released this 05 Oct 06:57

Maintenance release: code clean-up and two small fixes. Projects from 0.2.0 open unchanged.

Fixes

  • Renaming a transcript: pressing Escape now cancels the rename. Previously the typed name was saved anyway.
  • CSV and Excel: every CSV export now carries a UTF-8 byte-order mark, so Excel shows å, ä and ö correctly. Previously this applied only to the codebook, code matrix and code overlap exports, not to Export to folder or the analysis view. CSV files are also written with correct line endings on Windows.

Under the hood

  • About 740 lines of unused or duplicated code removed: an old speaker-naming dialog, ten server routes that the interface never called, and duplicated export and encryption logic.
  • Code comments are now in English and trimmed.
  • Tests: 163 → 162. Tests for removed routes were removed, and new tests cover encrypted project files, export downloads and the open-project check on all routes.

Installation

Download the file for your system below. Step-by-step instructions, including how to open the unsigned app the first time:

System File
macOS, Apple Silicon (M1 and later) Transcribbler-0.2.1-arm64.dmg
macOS, Intel Transcribbler-0.2.1.dmg
Windows Transcribbler.Setup.0.2.1.exe
Linux Transcribbler-0.2.1.AppImage

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 14:34

Beta release for teaching. Students code ready-made transcripts; audio transcription is switched off by default.

Download

System File
macOS, Apple silicon (M1–M4) Transcribbler-0.2.0-arm64.dmg
macOS, Intel Transcribbler-0.2.0.dmg
Windows 10/11 Transcribbler.Setup.0.2.0.exe
Linux Transcribbler-0.2.0.AppImage

The app is not notarised by Apple or signed for Windows, so your system will warn you the first time. Step-by-step instructions: Installation (English) · Installation (svenska)

What's new in 0.2.0

For courses

  • Tools → Export my codings / Import codings…: students code in their own copy of the project and hand in a codings file. Transcripts are matched by ID or identical text, codes by ID or name; missing codes are created, and anything that cannot be matched is reported.
  • English interface throughout, including error messages, exported documents and file names. The app starts in Swedish on Swedish systems and in English otherwise; switch with EN/SV.

Analysis

  • Transcript tags (right-click → Tag, or tags: in Markdown front matter) and a tag filter in the Analysis view (match any / match all). Exports and code counts follow the filter.
  • Clicking an excerpt jumps to it in the Coding view, also for overlapping codes and other coders' excerpts.

Fixes

  • Project export covers the whole project by default (previously only the open transcript); partial failures are reported.
  • The ✕ in Recent projects now offers Remove from list separately from permanent deletion.
  • Text in Word tables is imported.
  • Code overlap, IRR and Markdown export no longer crash in projects with image code pins.
  • Statistics, IRR and anchors work in encrypted projects; QDPX export contains readable text.
  • A failed transcript load can no longer lead to the transcript being overwritten.
