RATION 0.3.0: Autopilot, and on PyPI as ration-cli

Choose a tag to compare

@KNambiarDJsc KNambiarDJsc released this 13 Oct 17:56

The first release on PyPI.

Install

uv tool install ration-cli # or: pipx install ration-cli

The package is ration-cli; the command is still ration. Do not pip install ration: that name on PyPI is an unrelated package. If you installed from GitHub earlier, run uv tool uninstall ration first.

New in 0.3.0

  • ration autopilot (also ration nightshift): turns idle usage you chose to make available into verified work. It finds tasks from local repository signals, scores them, and runs one bounded task at a time. Each task works in its own git worktree and is compared with a baseline; accepted changes are committed under ration/auto/<run>/. Nothing is merged into your branches or pushed, and your checkout is never written to. Modes safe, build and research; --dry-run shows the plan without running anything. Contributed by @NamanChordia07.
  • ration goal: a project goal with priorities and constraints, used to rank work.
  • .ration/policy.toml: add protected paths, deny categories, set the weekly reserve and task cap. It cannot switch built-in protections off.
  • Claude Code plugin with slash commands that call the local CLI: /plugin marketplace add KNambiarDJsc/Ration, then /plugin install ration@ration.
  • Project logo, and a PyPI page whose images and links resolve.

Fixed

  • Cancelling a run on Windows stopped only the .cmd shim of an npm-installed agent and left the agent running. The whole process tree is now stopped.
  • On Windows with an npm install of Claude Code, a multi-line prompt was cut at its first newline, so ration run reported nothing. The prompt now goes on stdin.
  • A hook payload starting with a byte order mark was logged as an error and dropped.
  • Hooks are about 25 ms faster per tool call (median 140 ms instead of 166 ms on the reference Windows machine).
  • A test fixture that failed at random on CI.

Read before relying on it

  • Autopilot is new in this release. Start with ration autopilot --dry-run.
  • The governor's saving is still a replay estimate; ration governor status shows the real before/after on your machine.
  • The Codex adapter has not been run against a live Codex install.

RATION 0.2.0: context governor, xray, handoff

Choose a tag to compare

@KNambiarDJsc KNambiarDJsc released this 11 Oct 16:37

Long sessions are where your quota goes. Every message re-reads your whole conversation, and Claude Code's default lets context grow to ~1M tokens before it compacts.

Install

uv tool install git+https://github.com/KNambiarDJsc/Ration

Do not pip install ration: that name on PyPI is an unrelated package.

New in 0.2.0

  • ration governor: replays your real sessions under different auto-compact windows, rejects windows that would compact too often, and recommends the one that holds up under pessimistic assumptions. apply writes Claude Code's documented autoCompactWindow setting (backed up), status shows the real before/after, revert undoes it.
  • ration xray: where your usage went, from the session files already on your disk, with ranked changes.
  • ration handoff: a restart kit built from a session and your repo's git state, with no model call. Optional automatic carry-over after /clear.
  • Resume-cost tip, a compact nudge when tests have just gone green, and a status-line price tag for the next message.

Verified in real Claude Code sessions (2.1.296)

  • The resume-cost tip predicted a 43k-token rebuild; Claude Code billed 42,674.
  • The restart kit reached the new session after /clear, and the model could quote it.
  • Auto-compaction fires at a configured window. With a 100k window the context came back at 120k, so windows that small compact repeatedly.
  • The compaction request is billed as fresh input and is not written to the session transcript. The governor's cost model uses that measurement.

Read before relying on the numbers

  • The governor's saving (26% to 35% on the reference history) is a replay of one heavy user's sessions, not a multi-day measurement.
  • Claude Code's own /autocompact text recommends the auto window for cost and performance. This project disagrees for long sessions on the data it has; ration governor status is how to find out on your machine.
  • Compaction requests are invisible to RATION's token counts.
  • The Codex adapter has not been run against a live Codex install.
