Thor Pathfinder 1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 05 Oct 11:47

Brightness and volume on a button, a profile that gets out of the way of fast games, and each screen's volume following its app. After updating, a one-time What's new in 1.1 page shows each feature with a button straight to it.

🙏 Thank you, @raygan and @ItsRetroPup

This is the first release with features from the community. @raygan measured the delay Android adds to every button press while Pathfinder's service is on, and built the Disabled profile and the Quick Settings tile around those numbers (#2). @ItsRetroPup made each screen's volume follow its app when the screens swap, chasing the switch-over down to a few milliseconds (#3). Thank you both.

☀️ Brightness & volume

Two new shortcuts, Brightness and Volume, put a slider on the top screen.

  • D-pad Left / Right change the level, and keep going while held.
  • D-pad Up / Down move between the top screen, both screens and the bottom screen. Triangles above and below the icon light up for the screen being changed (both lit for both). With both, each press moves the two screens by the same step.
  • Drag it with a finger too. Back or B closes it, and it goes away by itself after 3 seconds.
  • While it's up, the slider has the controller, so the game underneath gets no presses.
  • Brightness needs Shizuku. Volume works on the top screen without it, and the bottom screen's needs Shizuku.

The new cog → Brightness & volume page sets how much each press changes (brightness 1–20 %, volume 1–3 of 15 steps), how fast a hold goes, and whether the slider sits at the top or bottom of the top screen.

🎮 Disabled profile

While Pathfinder's service is on, Android sends every button press through it before the game, measured at about 2 ms extra per press in Silksong. The new built-in Disabled profile switches that off entirely, so every press goes straight to the game. Link your fastest games to it under Manage profiles → Profiles, and it takes over whenever they're in front.

🧩 Quick Settings tile

A Pathfinder profile tile shows the profile in use, and a tap asks which one to switch to, Disabled included. It's also the way back out of Disabled, since the buttons don't reach Pathfinder there. The What's new page can add it for you.

🔊 Volume follows the apps

Turn on Swap each screen's volume (cog → Brightness & volume) and each screen's volume goes with its app when the screens swap: mute one screen, swap, and the muted app stays muted on its new screen. Off unless you turn it on. Needs Shizuku.

🧭 Smaller changes

  • Show buttons for linked apps (cog → Manage profiles) decides whether the picture of the Thor also appears when a linked app switches the profile. On by default, as in 1.0.
  • D-pad combos are gone from the combo picker. The Thor reports its D-pad as a hat rather than as buttons, so a combo with the D-pad could never fire. Any you made still show on their button card, where you can remove them.
  • The What's new page only ever appears after an update. A fresh install always starts with setup.
  • The Diagnostics report shows whether key filtering is on, and the Disabled profile's linked apps.

Thor Pathfinder 1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 25 Sep 16:15

The biggest update yet: profiles that follow the game you're playing, button combos, backups you can share, and Pathfinder in five languages. After updating, a one-time Welcome to 1.0 page shows each new feature with a button straight to it (it's under About → What's new in 1.0 afterwards).

🎮 App profiles

Link apps to a profile (cog → Manage profiles → Profiles → a profile → Apps that use it) and Pathfinder switches to that profile while one of them is the app you're playing, then back to yours when you leave it.

  • It follows Focus Mode: the top screen's app when focus is locked to the top, the bottom screen's when locked to the bottom, and in Auto-lock the one you last used.
  • Switch profile yourself inside a linked app and your pick holds until you leave that app.
  • Each switch shows a short message, plus the picture of the Thor's buttons if Show the buttons on switching is on.
  • Needs Shizuku. A small helper runs under Shizuku only while some app is linked, and it only learns app names, nothing inside them.

➕ Button combos

Hold Back, Home or the AYN button and press one other button, or two together, for dozens of new shortcuts. Add them on the Back, Home and AYN cards (the ones with the small A + B mark).

  • Any button can join: A, B, X, Y, the D-pad, L1, R1, L2, R2, L3, R3, Select, Start, and the other two of Back, Home and AYN.
  • The buttons in a combo never reach the game.
  • A combo has to come before the held button's Hold would run.
  • Combos follow the letters printed on the buttons, so they stay the same in the Xbox controller style.
  • They show on the button cards and on the picture of the Thor.

💾 Backup & share

Under cog → Manage profiles → Backup & share:

  • Save a backup: every profile with its shortcuts, combos, timings, keep-running list and linked apps, in one file.
  • Restore a backup on this Thor or another.
  • Share a profile as a file, and Add a shared profile beside your own. Its linked apps come along if they're installed and not linked to one of your profiles already.

Files go through Android's own file picker, so Pathfinder needs no storage permission. The watchdog and automatic updates stay as they are, since they depend on each Thor's Shizuku.

🌍 Five languages

English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese and Japanese. Pathfinder follows the Thor's language, or you can pick one for it alone under cog → Language. The translations were made with AI (Claude), so some wording may be off: corrections are welcome as an issue or pull request. The Diagnostics report stays in English.

🧭 Smaller changes

  • Manage profiles is now three rows: Profiles, Show the buttons on switching, and Backup & share.
  • The picture of the Thor now stays up until you press a button or tap it, instead of closing on a timer.
  • Button cards show up to two lines of shortcuts when closed, so nothing is cut off.
  • New screenshots in the README.

Thor Pathfinder 0.9.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 25 Sep 10:10

One button can now reach every shortcut, a new shortcut switches Focus Mode, and Pathfinder has a new icon. And if you switch Pathfinder off yourself, the watchdog now leaves it off.

🧰 Shortcut menu

A new action, Shortcut menu, opens a list of every shortcut on the top screen. Pick one and it runs straight away, once. It's the same list you set shortcuts from in the app, and the ones with a > ask their usual questions first (which app, which screen, which profile and so on). Give it to any button and that one button reaches every shortcut. It waits for the menu to close before running, so Back, a screenshot or a screen swap acts on what's underneath.

🎯 Focus Mode shortcut

Focus Mode decides which screen the controller drives. The new Focus Mode shortcut (needs Shizuku) changes it without opening the Thor's own menu, in one of four ways:

  • Top screen focus: lock focus to the top screen.
  • Bottom screen focus: lock focus to the bottom screen.
  • Cycle focus modes: Auto-lock → Top screen → Bottom screen → Auto-lock.
  • Top/Bottom focus swap: flip between the two screens. From Auto-lock it goes to the top screen first.

It changes the same setting as the Thor's Focus Mode menu, so the Thor handles the rest just as if you'd picked it there. The Thor shows nothing when Focus Mode changes, so Pathfinder shows a short message with the mode it's now in.

🧭 Shortcut list

  • Two-column view. A third layout sits between the single list and the wide view. The icons at the top switch between all three, and your pick is remembered, in the app and in the Shortcut menu.
  • A thin line now separates the shortcuts with a > from the rest.

🎮 Button symbols

Each button card on the main screen shows its button's symbol: the curved arrow for Back, a house for Home, AYN in a rounded box for the AYN button, a square for Select, a play symbol for Start, and an analog stick for L3 and R3.

🎨 A new icon

Pathfinder has a new app icon.

🐕 Watchdog

  • Switching Pathfinder off yourself now sticks. If you switch Pathfinder's service off in Android's settings, the watchdog leaves it off, after you close Settings and after a restart, until the service is switched on again. Before, it switched the service back on at its first check after you left Settings. The Watchdog page and the Diagnostics report say when it's leaving the service off.
  • Stopping it takes effect at once. When Pathfinder stops the watchdog, it now stops straight away. Before, the old copy could keep running for up to one more interval.
  • Updates reach it straight away. After an update, the watchdog restarts with the new version as soon as Pathfinder runs again, instead of the next time the Thor restarts.

🛠️ Building from source

  • The icon's artwork and the script that builds it are in tools/icon/: python tools/icon/make_icon.py (needs Pillow) rebuilds it.
  • Shell scripts now always check out with Unix line endings (.gitattributes). A Windows checkout with Git's automatic line-ending conversion used to give the watchdog script Windows line endings, which the Thor's shell misreads.

Thor Pathfinder 0.8.3

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 24 Sep 11:18

The cause of "Pathfinder says it's on but no shortcut works" after a restart, or after closing or minimizing Pathfinder, has been found, and Pathfinder now fixes it. Plus a tidier shortcut list, and a profile picture that keeps your buttons to itself.

🙏 Thank you, @Brendon-Wood

This fix exists because of @Brendon-Wood, who spent days chasing it in issue #1: round after round of captures, re-uploads and dead ends, until he found the setting behind it. Thank you for sticking with it.

🩺 Shortcuts dead after a restart, closing or minimizing: found and fixed

The Thor's own settings have a page called APP Auto Launch Manage (Settings → Thor settings → Advanced Settings). Despite the name, an app switched on there can't have anything started in the background: the system quietly refuses to start its services unless the app is on screen. With Thor Pathfinder switched on there, every time Android had to start the accessibility service again while Pathfinder wasn't on screen (after a restart, or after Pathfinder was closed or minimized), it showed the service as on and never started it, and nothing was logged anywhere. Thor Wayfinder is affected the same way.

  • 🔎 Pathfinder spots it. A red card on the main screen and a line in setup say so plainly, and the Diagnostics report shows the list.
  • 🔧 One press to fix it. With Shizuku, Fix it takes Pathfinder off that list (every other app on it stays exactly as it was) and switches the service off and on. No restart needed.
  • 🐕 The watchdog does it by itself. If you use it, it now takes Pathfinder off that list too, and it comes back after a restart even when the service can't start, because it no longer waits for the service to get going.
  • ✋ Or by hand: switch Thor Pathfinder off on that page, then switch Pathfinder's accessibility service off and on once.

🎮 The profile picture keeps your buttons

When you switch profiles, the picture of the Thor now owns the buttons while it's up: the press that closes it goes no further, so the game or app behind never sees it. Its Dismiss button shows the A button, though any button works. Volume still works, and the sticks still reach the app (Android gives Pathfinder no way to hold those back).

🧭 A better shortcut list

  • Wide view. The list of shortcuts is laid out three across, which suits the Thor's wide, short screens far better than one long column. Two icons at the top switch between the wide view and a single list, and your pick is remembered.
  • ">" means more to choose. Home, Close app(s), Open an app and Profile switcher ask a little more before they're saved, so they carry an arrow and sit together at the end.

✨ Also new

  • Active Profile: now labels the profile oval on the main screen, and it follows switches made by a shortcut or its Ask question, so it never shows a stale profile.
  • What's New on the update notice opens the release page with the new version's notes.
  • With Check when Pathfinder opens turned off, the update button no longer repeats an old "Up to date": it reads Check For Updates with a neutral dash, since nothing has checked.
  • The watchdog's check now reads one more setting, about 22 milliseconds every 5 seconds: still under half a percent of one processor core.

📲 Install

Download Thor-Pathfinder-0.8.3.apk below and open it on the Thor. It installs over 0.8.2 and keeps your settings and profiles. With automatic updates turned on, Pathfinder installs it by itself.

fix-accessibility.sh is no longer attached to releases. It now also takes Pathfinder off APP Auto Launch Manage, and it's in the repository under tools/ for anyone without Shizuku.

Thor Pathfinder 0.8.2

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 24 Sep 09:37

A small follow-up to 0.8.1: the watchdog now comes back by itself after a restart, and it tells the truth about whether it is running.

🐕 Watchdog comes back after a restart

The watchdog runs under Shizuku, so a restart stops it along with Shizuku. In 0.8.1 it stayed stopped until you turned it off and on again.

🔁 Now it starts again by itself as soon as Shizuku is running. That works whether Shizuku comes up on its own at boot or you start it by hand later. It only does this if you left the watchdog on. Switched off, it stays off.

🩹 Fixed

🔎 The watchdog always looked like it was running. The check that asks "is a copy running?" found itself and always answered yes. So after a restart the Watchdog page still said On, and the Diagnostics report still said it was running, even when nothing was. The page now shows On, but not running when that is the case, and the report says so too.

✨ Changed

🖱️ One mouse mode message, not two. The Thor already shows its own message when mouse mode turns on or off, so Pathfinder's mouse mode shortcut no longer adds a second one. It still tells you when it couldn't change mouse mode because Shizuku isn't running.

📲 Install

Download Thor-Pathfinder-0.8.2.apk below and open it on the Thor. It installs over 0.8.1 and keeps your settings and profiles. With automatic updates turned on, Pathfinder installs it by itself.

fix-accessibility.sh is attached again, unchanged from 0.8.1. It is for when Pathfinder's accessibility service gets switched off and Shizuku isn't running: open the Thor's own settings, choose Run script as Root and pick it.

Thor Pathfinder 0.8.1

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 24 Sep 03:09

If your shortcuts have ever just stopped working, this one is for you. Pathfinder now notices, says so, and can put itself back.

🩺 When the shortcuts stop

A few people have hit this: everything is set up, and one day no button does anything. Two different things were going on, and Pathfinder reported neither of them.

🔎 Pathfinder now tells the two apart. Android can switch the service off — it does that whenever the app updates, and some Thors do it at other times. Or the switch stays on and Android never actually starts the service, which is worse, because everything looks right. Pathfinder used to read the switch and call that "on", so in the second case it cheerfully reported that all was well while nothing worked. It now reports whether Android has really started the service, and when the two disagree it says exactly that, with the fix.

🔁 One press to fix it. With Shizuku connected, the setup screen offers a button that switches the service off and on for you, which is what makes Android start it again. No hunting through Android's settings.

📜 A script for when Shizuku isn't running. After a restart Shizuku often isn't up, and that is exactly when the service is off — so the button can't help. fix-accessibility.sh is attached to this release: put it on the Thor, open the Thor's own settings, choose Run script as Root and pick it. It adds Pathfinder back, keeps every other accessibility service exactly as it was, and changes nothing else. It is short, and worth reading first.

**edit: just for clarification, this does not fix the core issue (yet) but these and watchdogs temporary work around are safety nets for now while i continue to work on the core issue, thank you for you patience.

🐕 Watchdog (optional)

If it keeps happening, the cog's new Watchdog page turns on a small helper that Shizuku keeps running. That is the point: whatever stops the service often kills Pathfinder too, and anything living inside Pathfinder dies with it. This doesn't, because it belongs to Shizuku. It checks every few seconds and puts the service back, usually before you notice.

It is off until you turn it on, and it is deliberately well-behaved:

  • It only ever adds Pathfinder's own service. It never touches anyone else's.
  • It leaves the switch alone while Android's settings are open, so turning the service off yourself still works and stays working.
  • It logs every decision, shown on its own page.
  • It checks every 5 seconds by default, about 12 milliseconds a check — a fraction of a percent of one processor core. You can set 10, 30 or 60 seconds instead.
  • It stops when you turn it off, and at a restart, since Shizuku does too.

The whole thing is watchdog.sh in the source. An app that switches its own accessibility service back on is exactly what a bad one would do, so all of it is there to read.

🧾 Diagnostics

A new Diagnostics page behind the cog, with a Copy report button. It gathers what actually matters when something is wrong: what the Thor reports itself as, whether Android has the service installed as well as switched on and started, Shizuku, both screens, AYN's focus-lock settings, your profiles and every mapping, and a history of each time the switch changed or the service stopped. One paste answers most of a bug report.

Thor Pathfinder 0.8.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KaitonGxx KaitonGxx released this 23 Sep 12:49

One Thor, several set-ups. Keep a profile for handhelds games, another for emulators, another for when you hand it to someone else, and swap between them with a button.

🗂️ Profiles

A profile is your whole set-up, not just one shortcut. It holds every button and gesture, your keep-running list, the hold and double-press timings, and vibration. Change a profile and none of the others move.

Everything you already have becomes your Main profile. Nothing is copied, converted or migrated on update — the profile you start on is the settings you were already using, under a new name. Open Pathfinder after updating and the only difference is a new oval under the title.

The oval switches profiles. It says which one is in use, and opening it lists the rest plus Create profile.

🆕 Creating one starts every shortcut at its default, so a new profile is a clean sheet rather than a copy. It offers to bring your keep-running list across, since picking those apps again is the tedious part. You land on the new profile straight away.

⚙️ Manage profiles, behind the cog, renames, adds and removes them — and lets you choose which profile is the main one. The main profile is where an Enable shortcut returns to on a second press, what Pathfinder falls back to if the profile in use is deleted, and the one that can't be deleted itself. It starts out as the profile you already had, and you can move it to any other.

🎮 Profile switcher is a new shortcut action, so you never have to open the app to change profile. Set a gesture to:

  • Cycle profiles — step to the next one each press.
  • Enable (a profile) — turn that one on, and press again to come back to your main profile.
  • Ask each time — pick from a list on the top screen.

🗺️ Switching shows you what you're holding. Pathfinder draws the Thor with a box beside every button that carries a shortcut in the profile you just moved to, so you can see the layout without opening anything. It waits on screen until you press Dismiss — a tap anywhere, or any button, does the same. Turn it off with Show the buttons on switching in Manage profiles.

One thing profiles deliberately leave alone: mouse mode. That one isn't Pathfinder's to keep — it's the Thor's own setting and its own config file, shared by everything on the device, so it stays put whichever profile you're on.

✨ Also new

🧹 Close background apps — a sixth mode for Close app(s). It clears everything the two screens aren't showing: the apps in front stay exactly as they are, neither screen is sent home, and every task behind them goes. Asked for by a user who wanted "close all apps except foreground apps".

🐞 Fixed

🏠 Home targets, when AYN's focus lock is on. The Thor's Settings has a switch called Enable Home and Back focus lock, separate from the Focus Mode menu. With it on, an injected Home key gets re-aimed at whichever screen Focus Mode holds — so Home (bottom) sent the top screen home, and Home (both) only did the top. Pathfinder now starts each screen's own home screen instead of pressing the Home key, which addresses the screen directly and can't be redirected. Each screen is also tried independently, so one screen failing no longer skips the other.

🅰️ The AYN button, without Shizuku. Mapping any gesture to the AYN button made Pathfinder swallow every press, and it could only hand a plain press back by pressing the real key through Shizuku — so with Shizuku off, the AYN menu stopped opening. Pathfinder now swallows nothing it can't give back: the button is left alone, and the AYN menu keeps working. Back and Home are unaffected, since Android's own actions stand in for them. A hold or double-press mapped to the AYN button starts working again the moment Shizuku is back.

Close exactly what you mean to: all your apps, one screen's, the one you're using, or a few picked by name.

✨ New

🧹 Close app(s)

"Close all apps" is now Close app(s), and choosing it for a shortcut offers five ways to close:

  • Close all apps, like Recents' Clear all.
  • Close focused app: the app on the screen you last touched.
  • Close top app and Close bottom app: whatever app is showing on that screen. Home screens are never closed, so a screen on its home screen just says there's no app there.
  • Close specific apps: tick the apps you want, and the shortcut closes them wherever they are. It tells you how many were actually open, or No selected task(s) running if none were.

Your keep-running list applies to all five: a kept app loses its window like any other but is never force-stopped, so music, a download or a sync keeps going.

Shortcuts you'd already set to close all apps keep working exactly as before, and the settings page is now called Close app(s) too.

More ways to open apps, a Home that knows its screens, a tidier main screen, and Back working in RetroArch again.

✨ New

🖥️ Open an app, reworked

Choosing Open an app now offers Open 1 App or Open 2 Apps. With one app, pick the top screen, the bottom screen, or Ask: a small window asks which screen each time the shortcut runs. With two, pick one for each screen and the shortcut opens both at once.

🏠 Home, your way

A Home shortcut can send just the top screen home, just the bottom one, or both at once.

📂 A tidier main screen

Each button's card folds away and starts closed, and a closed card lists whatever you've changed, so the page reads at a glance. About moved to the bottom, and the title picked up a touch of colour.

Pulse joins OdinTools and ClusterTune among the recommended apps to keep running when you close all apps.

🩹 Fixed

  • Back works in RetroArch again, and in anything else that binds the real button. With Shizuku running, a plain Back or Home press now sends the real key instead of Android's stand-in, which those apps ignored.
  • The AYN Thor Lite can get through setup. It hasn't been tested on one yet, so reports are welcome.
  • 0.6.1: pressing up or down right after closing a button's card no longer throws focus to the top of the page. Cards now close instantly, so there's never a moment when the hidden rows can take focus.

📲 Install

Download Thor-Pathfinder-0.6.1.apk below and open it on the Thor. It installs over 0.6.0 or 0.5.x and keeps your settings. With automatic updates turned on, Pathfinder installs it by itself.
