🎞️ Supported Formats & Fields

Metadata Editor supports seven distinct NFO and metadata formats out of the box. It automatically detects the format from the root XML element (or text content) when loading a file, and allows you to convert between formats at any time.

πŸ“Š Format Overview

Format Mode Root XML Tag Typical Filenames Supported Media Servers
Movie <movie> movie.nfo, <MovieFileName>.nfo Kodi, Emby, Jellyfin, Plex (via NFO agents), TinyMediaManager
TV Show (Series) <tvshow> tvshow.nfo Kodi, Emby, Jellyfin, Sonarr, TinyMediaManager
TV Episode <episodedetails> / <episode> <EpisodeFileName>.nfo Kodi, Emby, Jellyfin, Sonarr
Music Album <album> album.nfo Kodi, MusicBrainz / Lidarr, Emby, Jellyfin
Music Artist <artist> artist.nfo Kodi, Lidarr, Emby, Jellyfin
Generic XML (Any custom root tag) *.nfo, *.xml Custom media tools, XML databases
Plain Text / Scene ASCII (None β€” raw text) <ReleaseName>.nfo Scene release notes, DOS CP437 / ANSI ASCII art viewers

  • Series Status (<status>): e.g., Continuing or Ended.

3. 🎞️ TV Episode (<episodedetails>)

Stored alongside individual episode video files (e.g., Breaking Bad - S05E14 - Ozymandias.nfo).

Episode-Specific Fields

When Episode mode is active, the Primary Information card automatically reveals:

  • TV Series / Show Title (<showtitle>)
  • Season # (<season>)
  • Episode # (<episode>)
  • Aired Date (YYYY-MM-DD) (<aired>, <firstaired>)

4. πŸ’Ώ Music Album (<album>) & πŸ‘€ Music Artist (<artist>)

    • Duration (<duration>, e.g., 3:45)

5. πŸ“„ Plain Text / Scene ASCII (PlainText)

Many .nfo files distributed with scene releases are not XML files at allβ€”they are plain text release notes decorated with intricate DOS Code Page 437 (CP437) box-drawing and shading characters (β–ˆ, β–“, β–’, β–‘, β•”, ═, β•—).

When Metadata Editor opens a non-XML .nfo file:

  1. It never throws a fatal XML parsing error.
  2. It automatically detects CP437 (DOS / Scene ASCII) encoding so all box-drawing characters render authentically.
  3. It automatically switches to the πŸ“ Raw Text / XML Editor tab in a crisp monospace font.
  4. If you want to replace the scene NFO with a media-server XML NFO, simply use Import β†’ Convert Active Format To β†’ Movie (or select Movie in the Format dropdown).
