Mnestic 1.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KhaledMD4321 KhaledMD4321 released this 01 Oct 23:24

Two things in one release: the fixes from a full audit of 1.3.1 against the
real extension, the real add-on and a real Coursology account, and new study
tools built on them. Update both halves: the extension (Chrome Web Store)
and the Mnestic Bridge add-on (AnkiWeb → Tools → Add-ons → Check for Updates).
Either works with the other's previous version; what's marked add-on needs
the new add-on.

New

  • 🧠 Test me. The AnKing cards tagged with a question are the flashcards for
it, so after the explanation you can run them as a quick test (T) in a focus
window that dims the page — the explanation states the answer, so it's hidden
while you recall. One cloze at a time; Show answer (with Extra, and
Additional Resources one click away); Got it / Missed — with Anki's keys:
Space shows the answer, then Space = Got it, 1 = Missed. Practice only — nothing is graded in Anki,
because remembering a card a minute after reading the explanation is
short-term memory. At the end, one tap unsuspends exactly the cards you missed
(add-on; with an older add-on it offers their notes), saves the question, or
    re-tests the misses.
  • Copy for AI, rebuilt. It copies the question in parts — stem, choices
with your answer and the correct one marked, the result, how it went, the
explanation — instead of the page text, which also carried the block's
question list ("1 … 40", "Item 20 of 40"), timers and toolbar labels. No qbank
name, no link. Five focused prompts — Full review, Why I got it wrong,
Compare the choices, High-yield points, Quiz me — plus your own,
from a ▾ next to the button; each adapts to the Step and to whether you
were right, wrong or unsure. ★ sets the one-click default. A prompt you wrote
    before keeps being the default.
  • How did that go?, rethought. It follows the result on the page: a right
answer asks how sure you were (Knew it, Narrowed to 2, Guessed), a wrong
one asks why (Didn't know it, Misread, Reasoned wrong, Torn between 2).
Each answer suggests the one next step. Still optional, and it never blocks
moving on. In the block breakdown a guess counts as missed and Narrowed to 2
as half, and once 3+ wrong answers are rated it shows why you missed.
  • A clearer panel. The buttons are grouped by what they act on: the question
(Copy for AI ▾, Make card, and Save to Missed Qs — the one filled button) at
the top, which stays in view while you scroll the panel; How did that go?
next; then your cards with Preview and Test me beside them. Line icons replace
the emoji, each button shows its key (Q, G, V, T), and the row fits on one
line on a laptop. Copy explanation moved into the ▾ menu. Keys pressed in a
Mnestic window no longer reach the qbank behind it (Coursology's arrows change
question), and the ▾ menu can no longer open over its own button — where a
second click on ▾ could change your default prompt without you noticing.
  • Changed your mind after Unsuspend? The button flips to Suspend again,
which re-suspends exactly the cards it unlocked — in the cards strip and at the
    end of Test me. (add-on)
  • A calmer, more refined look. Quieter neutrals and one refined accent,
hairline edges instead of grey borders, a framed panel and dialogs, keycap
hints, soft shadows, and smooth motion that turns off with reduce motion.
Save to Missed Qs stays green — the one filled button.
  • The Anki button brings Anki's Browse window to the front on Windows,
instead of flashing in the taskbar. (add-on)
  • Each matched card is readable at a glance in Save: its whole text with the
answers in bold, what Extra and Additional Resources say, its image count.
  • Figures behind explanation buttons can be attached when saving or making a
card: Mnestic presses the site's own button, takes the image, and closes the
    site's viewer again.
  • The image box is one line, like the text fields around it; added images
    sit inside it as thumbnails.
  • Subdecks inside a chapter deck: pick Missed Qs::GI and it saves straight
there ("Just GI" is the default); the question's subject — Pharmacology on
Step 1, Medicine or Surgery on Step 2/3 — is offered as an optional subdeck
    inside it, never another chapter.

Fixed

  • Make a card → Create card did nothing in 1.3.1. It creates the card again,
and now asks before adding one you already have.
  • The panel showed the previous question's cards. If Anki answered slowly
and you moved on, the old question's cards and resources could land on the new
one — and Save, Preview and the image keys then acted on the old one. Each
question is now built on its own, and a late answer for another question is
    thrown away.
  • The panel vanished when Coursology re-drew the explanation (toggling its
question list). It comes straight back.
  • "Couldn't reach Anki" was a dead end until you changed question. It now
says why — Anki closed, not paired, busy, or an add-on update needed — retries
on its own, and recovers the moment you paste a pairing code.
  • The results toolbar appeared where it shouldn't, such as your Previous
tests list, where it could send your test scores to Anki as question ids. It
now appears on results pages only.
  • Keyboard shortcuts were dead with an Arabic (or any non-Latin) keyboard
    layout.
They now follow the physical key. Typing in a text box inside a
web component no longer triggers them, and holding a key no longer flickers
    the overlay.
  • "Study them in Anki" left out questions saved with "No subdeck".

Seeing the whole card

  • Extra and Additional Resources have their own rows at the top of the
panel — text and images, card by card — and E / A show the whole field
over the question, not just its images. On Step 2 and 3 cards these fields
are most of the card, and a text-only Extra used to answer "No Extra image".
  • Preview shows the whole card: every filled field. Text, Extra,
Additional Resources and your Missed Questions notes are open; First Aid,
Sketchy, Physeo and the rest are one click away and load their images only
when opened, so it stays fast.
  • Save to Missed Qs can show the full selected card (collapsed until you
open it), so you can choose the right card without leaving the dialog.

Saving to Missed Qs, and undoing it

  • A save now unsuspends only the card you chose — not every card of every
    note on the question.
  • Undo reverses exactly that save: it re-suspends the cards the save
unsuspended, puts a moved card back in its own deck, and deletes a copy it
    made. (add-on for re-suspending)
  • A card saved from another question is left alone by this question's undo,
and the dialog tells you so. A card saved from two questions stays saved for
    the other one.
  • The missed list now names the questions you actually missed, not every
question AnKing tags on a saved card. (add-on) Cards saved before 1.4 can't be
told apart, and the popup says so.
  • The chapter suggested first is the one matching the question's own system
(read from your results page), then a subdeck you already have — reused
even under another name for the same system (GI = Gastrointestinal, Pulm =
Respiratory) — then the one you usually pick. Never the alphabetically first
    of a tie.
  • Picking a deck that is already a chapter (Missed Qs::GI) saves straight
into it — "Just GI" is the default — and no other chapter is suggested inside
it. What is offered is an optional subdeck for the question's subject:
Pharmacology or Pathology on Step 1, Medicine or Surgery on Step 2/3. The
base deck is remembered as the root, per Step.
  • One suggestion per chapter: First Aid's "Respiratory", B&B's "Pulm" and
Bootcamp's "Pulmonology" — or "Medicine" and "Internal Medicine" — are one chip,
    not three.
  • Empty fields are never shown — a field holding only spaces, line breaks,
empty boxes or an image with no source counts as empty.
  • Step 2: if your subdecks are organ systems, system chapters (MSK,
Rheumatology…) come before rotations (Internal Medicine…).
  • Undoing a copy says how many copies it deleted (it counted their cards).
    (add-on)

More accurate

  • The most specific card comes first — in Preview, in Save, and in the
image pages — so F shows the First Aid page for this question before the
    general ones.
  • Image pages from several cards say which card each comes from, and images
missing from your media folder are counted instead of silently skipped.
  • Weak areas rank by accuracy adjusted for how many questions each topic
has, so one unlucky question no longer outranks a real weak spot. Topics with
fewer than 3 questions are marked "few questions" and listed last.
  • Matches found through another Step's tags say so. The loose wildcard search,
which can match COMLEX ids, only runs when you ask for a broader search.
  • Coursology banks that aren't UWorld's (NBME, self-assessments…) are no longer
    matched against UWorld tags.

Study tracker

  • Today, the streak and the heatmap no longer break when the clocks change.
    A 10-day streak across Egypt's 29 October change read as 5.
  • Blocks counted by your qbank's dashboard are no longer booked to the day you
    happened to open it.
When the counter moved across several days, those
questions count toward your totals but not toward one day's bar or streak.
  • Rating an old question Guessed no longer counts it as answered today.
  • The finish date uses your bank's own counter over your last 14 days, waits
for 3 days of history before guessing, and shows the date at your daily target.

Known issue: in the store version 1.3.1, Make a card → Create card does nothing. It is fixed in the code and ships with the next update (1.3.2).

Content & copyright

Mnestic does not include, host or own any qbank question, First Aid page, Sketchy, Physeo, OME or other resource. Everything visible in these recordings comes from the recording user's own qbank subscription and own AnKing deck in their own Anki — Mnestic is only a tool that links the sources you already have the right to use. All question text, images and resource names belong to their respective owners, and are shown here only to demonstrate how the extension works. Mnestic is not affiliated with any of them.

This release holds media only — the extension and add-on downloads are in the latest release.

Mnestic 1.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@KhaledMD4321 KhaledMD4321 released this 22 Sep 20:13

A fix release for 1.3.0, which is live on the Chrome Web Store. Everything
here was found in real use or by measuring the real extension in a browser.

Only the extension changes. The Mnestic Bridge add-on is still 1.3.0 and
needs no update.

Shortcuts could spoil an unanswered question

The overlays and the panel have always waited until you'd answered. The
keyboard didn't. The question id is in the header during a test, and the
shortcuts only checked for an id — so pressing D mid-question opened Anki on
that question's own cards: the answer. On a bank where letter keys pick a
choice, choosing D did it by accident.

The small Anki button beside the question id had the same flaw: it sat next
to every question of a test, one click from the answer.

Now no shortcut fires, and no Anki button appears, until the question is
answered and its panel is up.
Before that, every key goes to your qbank
untouched.

Keys no longer reach the qbank twice

Paging an image overlay with ← → also changed the question underneath it —
come out of a five-page First Aid topic and you were several questions along.
The same was true of the letter shortcuts. The handler cancelled the browser's
default action but never stopped the key reaching the qbank's own listener.

A key Mnestic acts on is now claimed outright. With an overlay open, the arrows
never reach the page — including on a single-page overlay, where they used to
slip through.

The results toolbar stopped bouncing

It had two separate causes, which is why the first fix didn't cure it:

  • It re-dodged every control on the page once a second — including ones that
scroll — so it chased them up and down.
  • When the results table re-rendered, it read as empty for a moment; the bar was
destroyed and rebuilt, lost its position, and slid down from the top again.

It now settles once and stays put, and survives a table that blinks empty.

Dark mode: text you could not read

Five places, all one mistake — a colour tuned as a fill used underneath text.
The dark theme lightens accents, which is right for a bar and fatal for white
text sitting on one. Save to Missed Qs measured 2.35:1, Weak areas 1.86:1;
readable text needs 4.5. Three of the five were under the line in the light
theme too. All now measure between 4.5 and 7.9.

Smaller

  • Click a resource's key badge to show its images. The overlays were
    keyboard-only before.
  • Because of that, the popup's Keyboard shortcuts toggle now turns all
shortcuts off. Previously F/S/P/O/E/A kept firing with it switched off.
  • The popup's Recheck is a real button, so screen readers announce it
    correctly.

Tested: 115 end-to-end checks on the real extension across all three banks —
each new one confirmed to fail on 1.3.0 before it was trusted — plus an audit
that measures every text run's contrast in both themes.

Mnestic 1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KhaledMD4321 KhaledMD4321 released this 15 Sep 09:52

The version on the Chrome Web Store and AnkiWeb is 1.0.2, which worked on one
question bank and was MIT-licensed. This release is everything since.

Both packages must be installed together. The extension calls add-on ops
that only exist in 1.3.0. A new extension against an old add-on degrades with a
message rather than failing silently, but you want the pair.

Two more question banks

UWorld and MedPark join Coursology. They share UWorld question ids, so
the same AnKing tags match on all three.

Behind them is a real adapter layer: a new bank is a set of selectors and page
heuristics, never new privileges. The extension still runs only on the hosts in
the manifest, still talks only to 127.0.0.1, and still sends nothing anywhere.

Take a question back out of Missed Qs

Saving used to be a one-way door — a mis-click meant fixing tags by hand in
Anki's Browse window. Reopening the dialog on a saved question now offers
Remove from Missed Qs, which undoes whichever save happened: it untags the
card, moves it back to the deck it came from, and deletes the copy if you made
one. If you have since refiled the card yourself, your filing wins.

It never costs you notes. The Missed Questions field and the AnkiHub_Protect
tag guarding it are left untouched.

Missed questions, organised

  • A chapter subdeck per question, built from the card's own AnKing tags —
organ systems on Step 1, rotations on Step 2 — so the pile stays studiable by
topic. It reuses a subdeck you already have rather than creating a parallel
    one beside it.
  • Three ways to keep one, changeable at any time: move the real card (keeps
its history and AnKing updates), tag only, or make a copy.
  • A new deck inherits its options preset from the deck the card came from,
instead of silently landing on Default and changing your daily limits.
  • Your notes are protected. Mnestic writes into Missed Questions, so it
tags the note AnkiHub_Protect::Missed_Questions — otherwise a term of notes
can vanish on a routine AnkiHub update.
  • Retest exactly what you missed: the question ids by chapter, ready to
paste into your qbank's own test builder, and a filtered deck to study them.

Accuracy

  • The tag query matched the wrong questions in two directions. It could pull
in COMLEX ids, and it could never match a bare ::#UWorld::<id> tag at all —
1,896 Step 3 cards in one real collection were invisible to it.
  • The tracker now separates two signals: the qbank's own counter says how
many questions you did, our log says which ones and how they went. It credits
blocks it never watched, and re-baselines instead of going negative when a
    qbank resets.
  • Guessed questions count as missed, if you mark them.
  • Card readiness, image prefetch, weak-area breakdowns and the results toolbar
all had bugs that assumed Coursology's page shape.

Setup and the add-on

  • A first-run checklist in the popup: is Anki running, are you paired, do
you have a Missed Qs deck — and it creates the deck for you.
  • A Tools → Mnestic Bridge menu in Anki: your pairing code, a way to issue a
new one, and a status/deck check.
  • Six new ops the extension needed, and two for the undo.

Safety

  • The add-on cannot delete your cards. Its one delete operation exists to
undo a Make a copy save and refuses any note that is not a copy Mnestic
itself created: it must carry Mnestic's marker tag and must not be
    AnkiHub-managed.
  • Removing a tag is limited the same way — only tags under Mnestic::, so
nothing can strip marked, leech, an AnKing tag, or AnkiHub_Protect.
  • Both limits live in the add-on rather than the extension that calls it,
because the add-on is what a request actually reaches.
  • Question ids are pinned to digits where Anki queries are built, deck names are
escaped for search, and an unreadable id list can no longer send Anki an empty
query — which selects the whole collection rather than nothing.

Licence

Mnestic is now GPLv3, not MIT. You may use, study, modify and share it; if
you distribute a modified version, it stays free software.

Free, no ads, no paid tier. If it helps: https://buymeacoffee.com/bnkhaled

Tested: 96 end-to-end checks driving the real extension in a real browser
across all three banks, 20 unit tests on the destructive ops' guards, 12 adapter
fixtures, and 37 checks against a live Anki collection.
