Nodebay 1.2.1 for Apple Silicon

Nodebay 1.2.1 adds signed in-app updates and fixes media recovery, player spacing,
local Spotify equalizer routing and converter portability. Apple Silicon and
macOS 15 or later remain required.

• Media recovery: Now Playing starts without depending on a synthetic
  diagnostic player and restarts its helper after a failure. Media settings show
  actionable Automation errors and a Refresh Sources action.
• Untitled audio: active media without a supplied title, including shared
  audio from apps that publish a macOS media session, stays available as
  Untitled media. Empty sessions clear correctly, and another app's track
  details are not reused.
• Player layout: the original 640 × 190 notch size is preserved. Source tabs,
  metadata, progress and playback controls have their own space; optional lyrics
  share the artist row. EQ/download buttons no longer overlap custom
  playback controls; long control rows scroll.
• Spotify equalizer: Spotify desktop audio on the same Mac uses the native
  process EQ. An unmuted audio check keeps ordinary playback available until
  capture produces valid audio. The panel shows processing status, permission
  guidance and Retry; bypass or a processing failure restores normal playback.
• Downloaded-copy setup: System Audio Recording permission is required on
  each Mac. Media-control Automation permission is separate. See
  equalizer setup.
• Converter compatibility: the bundled Python runtime now comes from the
  verified Python.org package instead of a Homebrew build requiring macOS 26.
  Release checks reject any bundled binary above the advertised macOS 15 minimum
  or dependent on a developer-local library.
• Image compression: optimized copies are saved in Nodebay's persistent
  storage, so read-only files and folders no longer require write access beside
  the original. Original files remain unchanged.
• In-app updates: check manually in About Nodebay, or choose automatic
  checks and downloads. Nodebay verifies its own signed feed and archives, and
  defers restart while downloads, conversions or drafts are active. Existing
  1.2.0 installations need one manual/Homebrew upgrade to gain this feature.

• Shelf preservation: quitting waits for pending shelf saves; overlapping
  imports and conversions remain active until every operation finishes.

The clean build 28 package and independent CI
passed. The app and DMG are Developer ID signed, Apple-notarized and stapled;
the final ZIP and read-only DMG layout were verified. The full suite completed
with two optional tool checks skipped; all 19 final feed checks then passed
separately with the actual Sparkle tools. Exact results and hashes are in the
verification matrix.

Installed build 27 rejected a bad feed signature and a truncated archive before
installation. A real OpenAI API validation also passed, and Command-Q during
the request correctly kept Nodebay running. The complete 27 → 28 download,
installation and relaunch then passed through the separate testing feed using
the unchanged production archive. Afterward, the saved Keychain key completed
another real API validation without re-entry, and all 18 sampled managed files
remained unchanged. The installed executable matched the final production hash.

Authenticated Spotify playback, live EQ adjustment, bypass and pause/resume recovery passed in the compact installed candidate. Fresh capture-permission grant/denial, output-device switching and execution on a recipient's macOS 15 Mac remain untested. Process EQ handles local Mac audio; it does not equalize Spotify Connect playback on another device. Chrome EQ can affect other audible Chrome tabs.

Nodebay remains GPL-3.0 software based on Boring Notch. Required component notices
and source references are included in the repository and release packages.

Isolated updater acceptance test. This is not a stable Nodebay release.

The normal Nodebay-1.2.1-arm64.zip is the unchanged Developer ID signed, notarized and stapled production candidate, build28 from source8b2356b72d5f0afa99389041c30164f0cff35bb8. Testing uses an older notarized build27 on a separate feed before stable publication.

The asset explicitly named truncated-test-fixture is deliberately incomplete and cannot be installed. It exists only to prove rejection of an interrupted download. Do not use it as an installer. Production feed and latest stable release are unaffected.

Nodebay 1.2.0 adds optional Quick Chat, available media-source tabs and refinements
to the file drawer. Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later remain required.

• Quick Chat: opt-in OpenAI API or supported Codex CLI, Keychain storage for
  API keys, temporary conversations, configurable expiry and separately consented
  Knowledge Folder excerpts. API billing is separate from ChatGPT subscriptions.
  Replies arrive as complete messages. The key entry has a visible heading,
  bordered secure field and paste instructions. Missing setup is shown explicitly.
• Chat layout: right-aligned question bubbles fit their text and stay compact
  after resizing, with wrapping preserved for long and multiline messages.
• Media: switch directly between available sources, including paused media;
  more space above the title; cleared unavailable metadata; corrected QuickTime
  document selection.
• File drawer: stable Finder-file intake, drag feedback and persistent
  downloaded files ready to drag into another app.
• Optional Longhaul companion: acknowledged automatic-protection controls
  and support for its Nodebay/Menu Bar location preference. Longhaul is separately
  installed and paired, is not bundled, and has no public installer configured.

The integrated local suite passed all 198 tests in 142.163 seconds after the key
field and bubble fixes. The signed Apple Silicon Release build was installed and
visually checked. A native chat using gpt-5-mini answered the synthetic prompt
Reply exactly OK. with OK, using the existing saved key and no Knowledge
Folder. Regression coverage includes short and multiline text, emoji, Arabic,
long wrapping and resizing. The final DMG and ZIP are Developer ID signed,
notarized and stapled, with matching checksums. Installation and real API chat
passed from the final DMG, preserving existing managed data and AI settings.
GitHub CI passed
for the exact application-source commit. Anonymous hosted downloads match their checksums. The Homebrew upgrade and
non-zap reinstall passed on the same Mac, including preserved data/settings and
a real API reply after reinstall. Other supported macOS versions, every
accessibility/display configuration, Knowledge Folder retrieval and physical
sleep behavior were not fully tested.

New features

• Quick Notes: explicitly paste text in the open shelf or use New Note to create a persistent Markdown file locally. File URLs still use the file workflow; URL-only text uses the downloader. Prose mixed with links remains a note. No continuous clipboard monitoring, AI processing or content logs.
• Native Markdown Quick Look: select .md or .markdown in Finder and press Space. Selectable headings, lists, tables and fenced code use system typography and the native translucent Quick Look background. Works with Nodebay quit.
• STL Repair: conservative Safe, confirmed Thorough and Inspect modes using the separately installed, unmodified Blender 5.0.1. Originals stay unchanged; batch results preserve partial successes. This is not a printability guarantee.

Improvements and fixes

• Automatic downloads use source URLs and structured metadata, not titles alone. Ambiguous content remains video. Tiles show Audio/MP3 or Video/MP4 and offer an override.
• Playlist items retain individual classification; cancellation preserves completed outputs and stale progress cannot replace a newer attempt.
• MP3 extraction is unavailable without FFmpeg. yt-dlp and FFmpeg remain separate Homebrew dependencies.
• Hardened release packaging signs the Markdown extension and every nested executable, checks extension identity/version and excludes network access from previews.
• Homebrew --zap no longer removes the entire Nodebay Application Support directory. Normal uninstall and shelf removal do not delete saved outputs.

Existing file stacks, multi-file dragging, PDF/DOCX conversion, image-copy compression, MP4 compression, video-to-GIF, media controls, HUD and external-display routing remain included.

Requirements and limits

• ImageOptim is optional and separately installed for image compression. Blender is optional and separately installed for STL repair. Neither is installed by the Nodebay cask.
• Downloads connect directly to the source service. Site support depends on yt-dlp and the service; cookies remain off by default. Users are responsible for rights and service terms.
• Quick Notes accepts 1 MiB of text. Hover-paste needs Accessibility and a pointer inside an open notch; New Note is the fallback. Automated routing/storage tests passed, but physical built-in/external hover-paste and destination-app dragging have not been fully reverified.
• Markdown previews accept up to 2 MiB, with bounded plain-text fallback above 256 KiB. Images become alt text; links are copyable but do not navigate. No remote resources load.
• STL repair has bounded input/resource limits and does not repair self-intersections. Inspect results before manufacturing; no physical print qualification is claimed.
• Finder preview was exercised on macOS 26.6.2 in light/dark appearance, with Nodebay quit. Other supported OS versions, a full VoiceOver audit, hardware HUD keys, wake/clamshell and the complete external-display matrix were not rerun for this release.
• External-monitor brightness requires compatible hardware/providers. Browser-tab media control requires explicit Chrome bridge installation. No Sparkle feed is configured; use Homebrew or manual upgrades.

Install or upgrade

Release verification passed: 146 local automated tests, clean Apple Silicon Debug and Release builds, independent GitHub CI, Developer ID signing, Apple notarization, stapling and Gatekeeper. Both public downloads match the published checksums. The Homebrew 1.0.0-to-1.1.0 upgrade and non-zap reinstall were exercised on the same Mac with preserved managed data. Finder rendered both Markdown extensions with Nodebay quit. These checks do not replace the manual coverage limitations listed above.

The one-time trust command is required by Homebrew 6 for third-party casks. Alternatively install the release's Nodebay.app from the DMG or ZIP. Preserve the existing stable bundle identifier and Developer ID requirement to retain preferences and authorization; no TCC database changes are made.

Nodebay 1.0.0 is the first stable release line for the expanded local-first utility bay.

New features

• Download YouTube and other supported media links through drag and drop, Add Link, Command-V inside an open notch, or a connected YouTube media source.
• Choose MP4, MP3, best original quality, resolution, or bitrate, with retry, cancellation, playlist confirmation, and completed files added to the shelf.
• Automatic is now the recommended default: YouTube Music and reliable structured music metadata select MP3, ambiguous YouTube content preserves video as MP4, and each playlist item is classified independently. A format control on the job tile provides one-time Video, Audio, or Best Original overrides.
• Compress local MP4 files into separate H.264/AAC copies through a separately installed FFmpeg engine.
• Convert short MP4, MOV, and M4V videos into persistent GIF copies.

Fixes

• File and URL drags now route to the correct notch on built-in and external displays.
• Files from external SSDs retain their security-scoped access when added to the shelf.
• Nodebay no longer requests broad Downloads-folder access whenever a file is dragged.
• PDF bullet glyphs no longer appear as (cid:N) placeholders in generated Markdown.
• Generated Markdown and GIF files remain available as regular draggable files instead of disappearing temporary file promises.
• Downloader output validation, YouTube tab matching, Add Link popover behavior, collision handling, and actionable failures were repaired.

Privacy and file safety

Document conversion and media processing remain local. Downloads connect directly from the Mac to the selected source. Nodebay does not operate a proxy, analytics endpoint, or download server. Original shelf files are never overwritten, moved, or deleted.

yt-dlp and FFmpeg remain separately installed, unmodified Homebrew companions. Microsoft MarkItDown 0.1.7 remains bundled unmodified under the MIT License.

Settings reliability

• The Settings window is no longer eligible for automatic macOS window restoration.
• A restored or system-ordered Settings window is hidden unless it was opened through an explicit Nodebay action.
• Intentional opening through the Nodebay menu, notch controls, context menu, onboarding, and Command-, remains available.

Nodebay is the utility bay in your Mac's notch. Version 0.1.1 is the first public release and includes the production HUD reliability repair.

HUD reliability

• Volume, mute, built-in display brightness, and supported keyboard-backlight keys are handled by a recoverable event tap.
• Accessibility is checked for the currently running signed Nodebay executable.
• Users upgrading from an ad-hoc build may need to remove the obsolete Nodebay Accessibility entry once, add /Applications/Nodebay.app, and enable it again.
• The event tap automatically recovers after timeout, wake, app activation, display changes, and notch-window recreation.
• Unsupported controls pass through to macOS, preserving normal hardware-key behavior.
• HUD presentation follows Built-in, Specific, Main, Follow Active, and All Displays placement modes.
• External monitor brightness requires a supported provider such as BetterDisplay or Lunar when macOS cannot control the monitor natively.
• Settings now reports authorization, event-tap, provider, display-routing, and last-error diagnostics without retaining key history.
