v2.0.0-beta.3: Breakdown categories, gitignore patterns, Linguist mapping (test build)

Choose a tag to compare

@Kit-p Kit-p released this 15 Sep 09:01

Test build of the breakdown categories feature, second generation. Supersedes v2.0.0-beta.3. Not a store release: install it manually as described below, and disable the store version of the extension while testing so the counts are not replaced twice.

Breaking change: patterns now follow .gitignore rules

Anything copied from a .gitignore behaves the same way here. A name without a slash matches at any depth; a pattern containing a slash is anchored to the repository root (prefix it with **/ to match at any depth); a trailing / matches everything inside a directory; ! removes files matched by earlier lines, last match wins; # starts a comment. Brace expansion and extglobs are no longer expanded. Matching is case-insensitive.

If you saved custom patterns in an earlier beta, check any that contain a slash, such as docs/**: they now match only from the root.

Changes since beta.2

  • Compare pages with many files no longer garble the summary sentence: the additions and deletions are found by their text rather than their position, which broke when GitHub rendered the file count as a third bold element.
  • Comparisons with more than 300 files: GitHub's API stops at 300 with no way to fetch the rest, so instead of showing short counts the extension now leaves the page untouched and shows a "⌁ N/A" marker whose tooltip explains why. Commits with more than 300 files are fetched completely.
  • Compare pages that only name the head, such as the pull request creation page against the default branch, work (from beta.2).

New in 2.0

  • Nine default categories tuned for popular ecosystems and tools: Agents, Tests, CI/CD, Infrastructure, Database, i18n, Dependencies, Configs, Docs. Agents covers instruction files, rules, skills, specs, and plans for coding agents (Claude Code, Codex and AGENTS.md, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf, Cline, Gemini, Aider, Kiro, Spec Kit, .planning/, and more).
  • Generated list refreshed: more lockfiles, generated-code suffixes, vendored directories, wrapper scripts, and dist/.
  • Linguist Attributes section: map linguist-generated, linguist-vendored, and linguist-documentation from a repo's .gitattributes to the generated list, to a category, or to nothing.
  • Presets: add Styles, Assets, Notebooks, Schemas, Benchmarks, or Scripts with one click.
  • Path Tester: type a path and see where the current lists put it, and which line decided.
  • Import & Export of all settings except the access token.
  • Palette grows to twelve colors, plus a custom color swatch.
  • Restore Defaults for the generated list as well as the categories.

Coming from an earlier beta

Saved lists do not update themselves. Open the options page and click Restore Defaults in both the Generated Files and the Breakdown sections to adopt the new defaults, then Save Changes.

Install

Chrome / Edge / Brave

  1. Download and unzip github-better-line-counts-2.0.0-beta.3-chrome.zip.
  2. Open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked, and select the unzipped folder.

Firefox

This build is not signed by Mozilla, which limits how it can be installed:

  • Any Firefox, temporary: open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, click Load Temporary Add-on…, and select github-better-line-counts-2.0.0-beta.3-firefox.xpi. The add-on is removed when Firefox quits.
  • Developer Edition, Nightly, or ESR, permanent: in about:config set xpinstall.signatures.required to false, then in about:addons use the gear menu, Install Add-on From File…, and select the .xpi.
  • Regular Firefox and Beta refuse unsigned add-ons, so only the temporary route works there.

What to test

  • Hover the counts on PRs, single commits, and compare pages in repos from different ecosystems, and check which category each kind of file lands in.
  • Use the Path Tester to probe paths from your own repos; report misclassifications with the path and the category you expected.
  • Try presets, the Linguist mapping, and export followed by import.

v1.9.0-beta.2: Breakdown categories (test build)

Choose a tag to compare

@Kit-p Kit-p released this 11 Sep 04:51

Test build of the breakdown categories feature. Supersedes v1.9.0-beta.1. Not a store release: install it manually as described below, and disable the store version of the extension while testing so the counts are not replaced twice.

Changes since beta.1

  • Firefox: the emoji icons in the hover card now scale with the rest of the card under trackpad pinch zoom.

What's new in this feature

  • Breakdown on hover. Hover over the line counts on a pull request, commit, or compare page to see a card with a proportion bar and one row per category (tests, CI/CD, infrastructure, configs, docs by default), then "Other" and "Generated". The breakdown never changes the counts themselves.
  • Custom categories. The options page has a new "Breakdown" section: add, rename, reorder (drag or arrows), recolor, and give each category its own glob patterns. Files match top to bottom, first match wins.
  • Pattern rules for both the generated list and the categories follow .gitignore conventions: match at any depth unless anchored with /, a trailing / matches a directory, blank lines and # comments are ignored.
  • Toolbar button that opens the options page.

Fixes included

  • Public repos work without a personal access token (an empty token used to fail every request).
  • Commit pages target the overall count instead of the first file's count.
  • Compare pages work for branch names containing slashes and for cross-fork comparisons.
  • Counts use thousands separators like GitHub ("2,015").
  • Options page renders correctly in Firefox.

Install

Chrome / Edge / Brave

  1. Download and unzip github-better-line-counts-1.9.0-beta.2-chrome.zip.
  2. Open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked, and select the unzipped folder.

  • Hover the counts on a few PRs, single commits, and compare pages, including repos with lockfiles or other generated files.
  • Change, reorder, add, and remove categories in the options page, save, and reload a PR to see the effect.
  • Try both light and dark GitHub themes, and pinch zoom in Firefox.
