Later, in #4299 I/we missed this change, which, appears to be the result of a bad merge conflict resolution that dropped all of the previous changes to this file.
The first commit in this PR, 811157a, reverts to the prior state, exactly identical to before #4299. The second commit a7b8a44, pulls the relevant changes out of #4299.
