Getting around DVinyl
Welcome aboard! This page walks you through the everyday things you will do in DVinyl: adding items, scanning barcodes, browsing your shelf and keeping a wishlist. Nothing here needs any technical knowledge.
When you open DVinyl, you land on your dashboard. It is your home base:
- A set of stat widgets (how many items you own, top artist, total value, and so on).
- Quick shortcuts to your collections.
- A quick add button to drop in a new item fast.
You decide which widgets appear and in what order. See Customizing your instance for that.
There are three ways to add something to your collection.
Most media types can look themselves up online, so you barely type anything:
- Choose the type you want to add (music, book, movie, game, LEGO...).
- Type a title (or an artist, an author, a set number...).
- Pick the right result from the list. DVinyl pulls in the cover, the year, the tracklist and the rest for you.
- Check the details on the confirmation screen, adjust anything you like, and save.
Have the physical item in hand? Use the barcode option, point your camera (or a scanner) at the barcode, and DVinyl finds the matching release for you. Great for adding a stack of items quickly.
No internet match, or a rare item? Use manual entry and fill in the fields yourself. Custom collection types made with the plugin editor always use manual entry.
Tip
On the confirmation screen, DVinyl warns you if it looks like you already own the item, so you do not add the same record twice by accident.
Open a collection to see all your items as cards. From there you can:
- Filter by format (vinyl, CD, cassette, digital, hardcover, Blu-ray, 4K, sealed, and so on). Digital is now a first-class format for music, movies and games, right next to the physical ones.
- Search by title, creator or other fields.
- Sort your items to find what you want.
- For games, filter by platform (console) to see just your Switch, PS5 or retro shelf.
- Click any item to open its detail page.
The detail page shows everything about one item: cover, metadata, your notes, its location on your shelf, and a link back to the original source (Discogs, TMDB, IGDB, Hardcover, Rebrickable).
A few handy things you can do here:
- Edit any field.
- Refresh the metadata to pull the latest info from the source.
- See variants, other copies of the same item you own in a different edition or condition.
- For music, see a value estimate based on the market.
Music releases show their tracklist on the detail page, and every track can now hold your own notes:
- A rating out of 5, so you can mark your favorites.
- Tags and a free-text note.
- The BPM and musical key, handy for DJs and producers.
- The lyrics: DVinyl can fetch them automatically (via lyrics.ovh) with one click, and you can always paste or edit them by hand. Fetched lyrics are saved with the track, so they load instantly next time.
Refreshing a release's metadata keeps everything you typed per track, it only updates the source data around it.
Not everything is on your shelf yet. Add items to your wishlist to keep track of what you are still hunting for. It works just like your collection, but it is kept separate. When you finally find an item, you can move it from the wishlist into your collection.
You can keep more than one collection, for example your personal library, a shared family one, or a themed one. Switch between them at any time. Managing collections and who can see them is covered in Users and sharing.
