Completed Heesch investigations: finite controls, closure limits, and a five-corona K=12 tiler
This publishes the completed investigations from our September 2026 campaign, including unsuccessful approaches and the limits of every exclusion. No new leaderboard improvement was found. The independently reproduced incumbent remains 4.988189, exact
Hc=Hh=4, with defect3/254. This is a research release, not a score submission. The strongest reusable result is an ordinary 20-cell polyhex with a strictly verified five-corona patch and an explicit twelve-copy periodic tiling. Both the full witness and a dependency-free tiling-certificate replay are included in Part II. A deep patch and a bounded small-period miss did not establish non-tiling.
Populations overlap across campaigns and must not be summed as globally unique discoveries. Some counts are artifact files or solver attempts, not shape identities. Every generation and search claim is scoped below. Enumerating a family is distinct from screening it; shallow witnesses and timeouts remain lower bounds or UNKNOWN.

Prepared using the Codex harness, with experiment computation on x86-64 Linux and independent artifact checks after retrieval.Credit Craig S. Kaplan for the underlying polyform data, conventions and native solver, the benchmark authors and maintainers for the frozen verification/proof system, matbalez for the promoted 15-hex incumbent, and nasqret/Frodan for the shared overlay queue and its provenance. Related public reports include #75, #30, #67, #68, #73 and #82. Recent independent reports #83 and #85 also study inherited periodicity and template-breaking; those are separate participants' results, not outcomes claimed by this campaign.
The report includes standalone evidence for its central periodic counterexample. Other proof logs, scripts, complete candidate banks and audit files remain in our retained research archive; a filename or SHA-256 below identifies that archive item and is not presented as an available public download. We are publishing the measured findings and bounded protocols here without implying that all raw files have been uploaded.
Part I: baseline, initial campaigns, proof-guided follow-up and remaining hills
These experiments were completed in September 2026 against the frozen challenge commit
ce3b8d6974d3f318c3c6081b421ed51c7d041d6e. They produced no leaderboard improvement. The independently checked starting submission remained 4.988189, with exactHc = Hh = 4and defect3/254. This digest covers setup/baseline verification, the public 153-shape queue, the first six-hill campaign, proof-guided mutation and tiling-breaking, and the subsequent three remaining hills. The later six experiments appear in Part II; unrun proposals are in a separate literature Discussion. The counts below are campaign counts, not a sum of globally distinct discoveries. Reused controls, repeated witnesses, and overlapping output banks are identified where relevant. New-to-campaign shapes are not claimed to be new to the literature.
Evidence standard
Strict lower bounds use the frozen verifier; geometry-only fractional values include full pocket penalties but are not accepted scores. Exact periodic quotient partitions exclude tilers; a periodic-search miss remains inconclusive. Changed shapes require fresh
tools/prove.py <witness> --checkcertificates. SAT in frozenF(S,m)is only a relaxation. Timeouts/native markers are never upper bounds, and CP-SAT INFEASIBLE results are distinguished from independently checked UNSAT proofs. Frozen benchmark and submission files remained unchanged.Conventions follow the frozen participant guide, Kaplan's paper and heesch-sat.

B. Re-examination of the public 153-shape queue
Inputs and attribution: public reproducibility bundle and discussion 75. The queue had previously recorded timed-out depth-two work without retained witnesses and with
official_gate_completed = false. The native solver was pinned to
isohedral/heesch-satcommitd12a527c04310fed51d522318126781e2f7ed56d, compiled with C++20 and CryptoMiniSat. Runs used-old -noreduce -show -maxlevel N. Native periodic and finite markers were not used as mathematical exclusions.Calibration reconstructed a known one-corona six-hex, two coronas of a monohex, the published two-corona six-hex, and the published four-corona 11-hex; the last took 8.351 seconds. Reconstructing the incumbent from scratch exceeded the initial 120-second limit. That timeout was retained; its committed witness supplied a strict-verifier control, while the independent 11-hex supplied the native depth-four reconstruction control.
The bounded screen used eight workers, an 8-GiB child memory limit and a 25-minute global ceiling:
All 319 final tasks completed with strictly checked output and none exhausted its task wall-time limit; aggregate task wall time was approximately 388 seconds across concurrent workers.
The ten tilers comprise one 18-hex, one 19-hex and eight 20-hexes. Eight have four-tile fundamental domains; the other two have six- and eight-tile domains. The follow-up used the frozen constructive gate, then periodic budgets of 6, 40 and 240 million work units, with 120 seconds per shape. All ten resolved at or before the 40-million stage. Every lattice and placement certificate was replayed with an independent integer quotient-partition checker, both on the compute host and after download.
Finding: the queue contained valid deep geometry that was useful for calibration, but every recovered H4 shape tiled. The other 143 remain open to deeper investigation; this experiment does not establish they have finite Heesch number or lack H4 witnesses.
C. First six-hill campaign
The generation/screening part covered 2,884 distinct legal shapes. It retained 664 H4 witnesses, all tilers. Every one of the 702 shapes with at least two retained coronas was classified: 699 tilers and 3 officially certified finite shapes. The remaining 2,182 had only depth-zero/one lower bounds and were not exhaustively classified.
The native screen used 2 seconds at depth one, 10 seconds at depth two, up to 48 extensions of difficult depth-two cases to 45 seconds, then 90 seconds at depth four for every retained depth-two candidate, with 8 GiB per process. There were 34 timeout events and one native CryptoMiniSat clause-ID-limit error. All 28 difficult raster cases, including that error case, were subsequently resolved by constructive tiling evidence. Timeouts were not interpreted as exclusions.
C1. Optimize the four remaining known H4 shapes
The tested shapes were the 13-hex
record20, other 15-hexrecord279, 17-hexrecord278, and 20-iamondrecord131. Two partial-corona packing passes, up to twelve valid one-tile P4 replacements per initial patch, and three fresh full-corona SAT seeds per shape produced 98 packing runs across 56 distinct complete patch cell sets. The first objective maximized required-cell coverage. The second also encoded exact one- and two-cell pocket penalties. Larger pockets remained outside the optimization objective, so all retained solutions were checked with the full defect verifier and objective bounds were treated as relaxations.
record20record279record278record131For every tested complete patch, all disjoint congruent next-corona placements were enumerated by aligning every oriented shape cell with every required boundary cell. Required cells absent from every placement are permanently unfillable. Their count alone gave a rigorous score ceiling below 4.988189 for all 56 fixed patches. Packing conflicts and pockets can only worsen those ceilings. This excludes the archived patches, not all arrangements of these shapes. Fresh proof blocks were not attached to the below-incumbent geometry outputs, so the displayed values are not new accepted scores.
C2. Contact-preserving 18–20-cell polyhex construction
The generator retained one or two actual nonoverlapping touching transforms from the incumbent's first corona, changed unprotected cells and grew to 18, 19 or 20 cells. There were 128 shapes in each of the six size/contact strata, for 768 total. Canonical duplicates and an earlier 631-overlay inventory were excluded.
The deepest retained levels were 620 at zero, 85 at one, 10 at two and 53 at four. All 53 H4 shapes and seven of the H2 shapes were tilers. The remaining three 19-hexes received checked frozen
F(S,3)proofs, establishing exactHc = Hh = 2:35d65e3f2ebcc09dd4bb53793c716f0cc01f93b973031c4b66c3cc30b954abf4a1b3288c02a717b20c662b695de33caaa44fddb99b6f851650ceed2c3fa8be3902c48733b4439588c6451edb995f7f8a98cb3e582a846687786011e00abb2a5dThe three exact H2 shape inputs, in the same order as the table, are:
These coordinate rows identify the shapes; complete corona witnesses and proof payloads are separate retained artifacts.
The initial final-gate invocation encountered a wrapper virtual-memory cap below CakeML's automatic reservation. The same proof bytes subsequently passed the unmodified record gate with the documented
HEESCH_CAKE_HEAP_MB=8192override. cake_lpr and lrat-check passed. Failed attempts and successful readbacks were retained. These shapes became finite controls for later experiments; no literature-wide novelty claim is made.C3. Forced grouping and dissections
Two distinct finite studies were completed:
C4. Directed 20-cell polyominoes
After independently reconstructing two published H3 square-grid seeds, the experiment generated 1,024 three-cell additions to those seeds and 256 random-growth controls.
The H4 witness rate rose from 12.5% in controls to 40.3% in the directed bank, but all 445 deep outputs were tilers. Preserving local surroundability was a strong tiler-selection heuristic in this experiment.
C5. Independently audit the incumbent's fixed-patch closure
An independent complete P5 placement-domain encoding for the committed P4 patch contained 2,476 legal placements. The accepted defect-3 partial selection supplied a SAT positive control. A relaxation permitting every placement and requiring at most two uncovered required cells was UNSAT, with its proof checked by drat-trim. Ignoring pockets makes this a relaxation of the actual defect problem, so UNSAT soundly excludes every legal defect-at-most-two solution on that exact complete patch.
Together with the accepted witness, this establishes fixed-P4 optimum defect = 3 at boundary 254. It does not establish global closure when P1–P4 are all variable. The broader claim in discussion 68 was not independently certified in this campaign: the public account did not supply the complete downloadable branch CNFs and proof bundle needed to replay the first-corona enumeration and high-boundary branches.
C6. Marked or mixed-grid adaptations
The geometric motivation was Bašić's H6 construction and public conversion experiments in discussion 73. Matching restrictions and half-cell caps were not assumed to survive conversion to a single unmarked grid. A derived finite H2 16-iamond served as a reconstruction control.
All candidates were legal and remained inside the 20-cell search band and span cap. All 166 H4 outputs and all 28 H2 raster outputs were constructive tilers. No qualifying high-Heesch adaptation emerged from these finite conversion families.
C7. Campaign validation
The final readback rechecked 6,443 screening/control witnesses, 145 explicit periodic certificates, all survivor classifications, both successful seed partitions, and the incumbent SAT/UNSAT receipts. Frozen census/boundary-factorization gates supplied some constructive classifications; periodic classifications additionally had explicit torus certificates. The aggregate classifications do not imply that every tiler has a separate periodic-certificate file.
D. Proof-guided mutation, tiling-breaking and nearby-pose co-design
This campaign tested 3,766 distinct legal shapes absent from the previous 3,515-shape inventory. Final classification was 701 tilers, 12 officially certified finite shapes and 3,053 unresolved shallow shapes. Every retained H4 shape tiled.
D1. Proof-derived mutation versus uniform mutation
The full frozen
F(S,3)formulas for the three finite 19-hex parents were regenerated; complete CNF hashes matched, and every stored core clause was located in the full formula. Collision clauses supplied deletion weights and halo clauses supplied addition weights. These were mutation heuristics, not inherited proofs. After excluding earlier canonical shapes, the bank contained all legal immediate single deletions, additions and swaps, plus 384 accepted proof-guided and 384 accepted uniform two-deletion samples per parent. The sampled arms alternated final areas 19 and 20.
The initial mutation bank totaled 3,484 shapes. It retained 2,275 depth-zero, 778 depth-one, 430 depth-two and one depth-three witnesses. The sole H3 output was independently excluded by an explicit six-tile periodic certificate.
The proof-guided arm raised observed two-corona yield from 7.64% to 10.07%, predominantly by generating more tilers. It found one finite candidate versus zero in the uniform arm. Shared deduplication, legality rejection and a single pseudorandom stream make this descriptive evidence; it is not a demonstrated improvement in record discovery. The single-edit arms have a different edit size and are not matched controls for the two-deletion arms.
D2. Break one periodic tiling while fixing the corona placements
The experiment used 55 hex tilers and 16 square tilers, each with a checked H4 input witness. It preserved area, allowed at most three cell swaps inside a one-cell-expanded support and required the selected parent periodic pattern to fail. Original-shape positive controls were checked at each depth. Each case had a 30-second solve limit, 300-model limit and 16 accepted-new-shape limit.
All 71 fixed-placement depth-four models were INFEASIBLE. At depths two and three, the bounded enumeration produced 103 new shapes—55 H2 and 48 H3—all independently classified as tilers. One certificate had to be transported into the witness's coordinate presentation; the transformed quotient cover was then independently checked.
Finding: breaking one known periodic realization usually leaves another available. The negative outcomes cover the declared cell support and fixed poses only.
D3. Jointly select the shape and nearby tile positions
An eight-hex/eight-square parent batch, plus one pilot, allowed tiles either to stay in place or move one lattice edge. At most three shape-cell swaps were permitted. The parents were ranked using their known periodic-domain sizes. Cases had a 90-second solve limit and 12-new-shape cap; strict rejection blocked that candidate for the case, so this was a heuristic enumeration.
Some identities recur between banks; the campaign headline removes eight repeated bank memberships rather than adding raw file counts.
D4. Simultaneously break a portfolio of periodic patterns
A bank of 233 independently checked periodic patterns was assembled, deduplicated, and applied only to shapes of matching grid and area. All 96 applicable checks on the three known finite controls survived the cuts.
The same 16 joint-design parents were searched at depths three and four, with the same per-case limits. All 32 solver runs finished INFEASIBLE after enumeration. The only legal emitted shape was an H4 square tiler already found in the preceding batch. Six additional model outputs were reproduced and rejected as disconnected.
This exhausted those narrow pose/support domains after the applicable cuts. It does not close larger edits, other orientations, moves beyond one edge, different parent patches or all tilings. The CP-SAT outcomes are not official non-tiler certificates.
D5. Twelve fresh official certificates
Every two-corona mutation candidate without constructive tiling evidence received the unchanged official proof workflow, starting at
m = verified Hh + 1, with one higher-level attempt when necessary and within the official band. Proof attempts had a 900-second cap. All twelve successful candidates passed cake_lpr and lrat-check under the record profile, using only the documented heap override where recorded.39ffa0890153Hc = Hh = 23b732b3ce673Hc = Hh = 26429e68335b3Hc = Hh = 26bb340014a8bHc = Hh = 27484b0b54c28Hc = Hh = 290bf35bfd374Hc = Hh = 29fcb96143d5cHc = Hh = 2ac7162986cd92 <= Hc <= Hh <= 3cba56a695cb7Hc = Hh = 2e108513b27a1Hc = Hh = 2f552bb1b7139Hc = Hh = 2f6ec18d73ffeHc = Hh = 2For the interval case, satisfiable
F(S,3)did not establish a third strict corona; checkedF(S,4)supplied only the stated upper bound. Final readback rechecked 8,250 strict witnesses and 437 explicit periodic certificates, reconciled every deep candidate with evidence, and checked proof-receipt hashes.E. Broader co-design, full winning-score search and direct forced-group synthesis
These three further experiments were completed after D. They produced no winning witness and did not modify the incumbent.
E1. Broaden shape/corona co-design
Eight parents covered known finite H4 shapes, newly certified finite 19-hexes, and deep hex/square tilers. The broad model selected 18–20 cells and poses jointly, with all legal orientations, radius-two translations around inherited poses, a two-edge-expanded shape support, up to six deletions and explicit addition caps. Applicable patterns from the 233-pattern portfolio were blocked. H4/tiler parents were tested at depths three/four; two H2 parents supplied depth-two bridges.
UNKNOWN; no candidate was emitted.INFEASIBLE; no candidate was emitted. All 70 processes completed. Original-witness controls passed. Additional finite-19H controls retained the 18–20 area restriction, edit caps and all 159 applicable hex tiling cuts, disabling only the requirement that the shape actually change. One stronger control exercised the full 3,949-pose broad domain.
The broad domains remain unresolved. Sector infeasibility does not exclude their containing broad domain, other supports or different arrangements.
E2. Search the entire winning-score condition on all seven known H4 shapes
Every P1–P4 placement was a decision variable; only the central copy was fixed. The model tracked the changing required boundary
Rand uncovered countU, and imposed the necessary rounded-score condition:Actual retained scores would additionally require the full pocket calculation and strict witness validation. A unit-square tiler gave a positive target-enabled control with geometry 4.999999 and was excluded from the research candidates.
The initial pass used two seed-relative margins for each of seven shapes: 14 domains, with 12 INFEASIBLE results and two incumbent UNKNOWN results. Both incumbent domains also received separate 600-second retries. A final pass covered seven globally complete coordinate domains, making 23 runs across 21 domains in total.
Completeness argument: for each axis, let
sbe the maximum oriented tile diameter anddthe maximum absolute point-contact displacement. Any tile in levelllies within the central bounding box expanded byl(s+d), by induction along its contact path. This also bounds every partial-P5 tile. All legal orientations and translations were enumerated; both triangle-cell types were included. The argument and implementation received an independent review. The six global negatives closed before lazy hole/pocket cuts. They are stronger search evidence than fixed-P4 optimization, but remain CP-SAT outcomes without independently checked UNSAT certificates. The incumbent's global closure remains unresolved.
All 23 pinned controls matched the frozen verifier's
R/U/Dcounts; binary-model replay and 26,000 rounding-threshold comparisons passed. The 11-hex and 16-hex H4 fixtures were newly reconstructed and strictly checked, then given bounded partial-corona packing work to supply positive controls.E3. Directly synthesize pieces with forced pairs/triples
The generator produced 144 new legal 18–20-cell pieces: 96 pair candidates and 48 triple candidates. Nine strata had 16 candidates each: square pairs, hex pairs and hex triples, each at area 18, 19 and 20. Pieces and group silhouettes were connected and hole-free.
Complete central-surrounding CNFs tested whether the proposed mates could be avoided. SAT assignments were independently checked; escape contradictions were proof checked.
The 40 forced pieces produced 39 canonical macro shapes. Sixteen macros had periodic tilings, yielding 17 independently checked periodic certificates for original pieces. The other 23 macros had checked no-surround contradictions. Mandatory partition plus those macro contradictions implied non-tilerhood of 23 pieces, without independently assigning a piece Heesch upper bound.
All 23 then passed fresh, unchanged
python tools/prove.py <witness> --m 2 --check, including cake_lpr and lrat-check. Thirteen received another fresh pass after stronger hole-permitted witnesses were reconstructed. Thus 36 successful proof passes concern 23 distinct shapes, not 36 shapes:Hc = Hh = 1Hh = 1, with0 <= Hc <= 1The latter row has a checked hole-permitted first corona but only a strict zero-corona lower bound; it is not an exact Hc=0 claim. Longer native searches on all 23 did not improve their strict lower bounds.
Across all branches, the 144 generated pieces ended as 19 tilers, 23 officially certified non-tilers, 93 checked no-first-surround cases and 9 still-unclassified escape cases. The two tilers beyond the 17 forced-group tilers came from other branches. None approached H4.
The final readback checked 1,242 strict witnesses and 178 explicit periodic certificates. Group audits regenerated 258 CNFs across 144 candidates and four controls; the macro pass checked 23 additional contradictions. Trivial contradictions exposing a drat-trim exit-status mismatch were checked by explicit replayable unit-resolution traces, without changing the frozen checker. The archive manifest covered 6,215 hashed files, whose downloaded sizes and SHA-256 values were reconciled.
Reproduction and retained artifact inventory
Search and proof computation used x86-64 Linux machines with 16 vCPUs and 128 GiB RAM. Agent orchestration and report preparation remained outside those machines. This digest intentionally omits access credentials, account details, network addresses and host identifiers.
The benchmark and native solver commits are pinned above. The generic verification path from a checkout of that frozen benchmark is:
pip install -e . bash tools/build_checkers.sh bash tools/build_solver.sh python -m heesch_verify submission/best.heesch python tools/prove.py submission/best.heesch --checkThe witness CLI alone does not run the separate defect/non-tiler gates. Search loops additionally called

They also produced useful finite controls, verified local-optimality evidence, and complete finite model domains. They do not establish that the broad research directions are exhausted, nor a new H5 finite polyform.
Part II: six further structural experiments and the final audit
This records the six-hill campaign completed on 8 September 2026 against challenge commit
ce3b8d6974d3f318c3c6081b421ed51c7d041d6e. It produced no verified leaderboard improvement. The incumbent target remained 4.988189, exact Hc=Hh=4, with defect 3 over 254 required cells. “New” below means absent from the campaign's recorded prior-shape inventory; it is not a claim of literature novelty. The most instructive result was a 20-hex with a strictly verified five-corona witness that nevertheless tiles the plane with a twelve-copy periodic unit. Its full tiling certificate and a standalone replay are included below. A bounded failure to find a tiling with at most eight copies would have missed it.
Evidence conventions
These experiments use the unchanged participant guide and frozen verifier/encoder.
F(S,m)proves Hh≤m−1. Combined with a matching lower-bound witness, this can give an exact finite value. SAT ofFis SAT of a relaxation; it is not a strict corona witness or a tiling certificate.UNKNOWN, implementation limit, absent deeper witness, or bounded periodic-search miss gives no finite-Heesch upper bound or non-tiling conclusion.Counts across experiments are not additive without deduplication. In particular, one certified Hill 1 shape also occurs in Hill 6; controls, alternative witnesses, certificate files and repeated solver arms are not additional shape identities.
1. Complete C3 polyhex motifs and all legal one-cell edits
The generator enumerated connected rotation-orbit sets about cell centers or hexagon vertices, including holed motifs before editing because a deletion can open a hole. It canonicalized under all twelve hex-grid motions. At areas 18 and 19 it reproduced the 646 and 587 threefold-symmetric motifs tabulated in Mason’s corrected count table, printed page 17. Frozen legality left 995 parents. All legal one-cell additions/deletions yielding area 18–20 were retained and deduplicated.
“Breaking C3” does not imply a trivial full stabilizer. There were 238 illegal original motifs. Enumeration examined 42,878 additions and 11,153 deletions, retaining 38,133 legal edit occurrences before deduplication. Independent validation checked connectivity, legality, free orbits, child provenance and zero overlap with the 7,425 prior identities.
Every bank identity received the declared bounded screen: native stages used 8 seconds at depth 2, 25 seconds at depth 3 and 90 seconds at depth 4, with a 310-second outer row limit. Stages were conditional; constructive tiler hits stopped further pursuit. Thus these are not uniform-depth exhaustive searches.
The H0 bucket comprises 13,225 checked trivial witnesses and three records without a saved witness; it is not an exact H0 claim. Of the 103 H2 identities, 94 were constructively classified as tilers and nine received checked official finite proofs. All nine finite leads are children breaking C3; all 23 unedited C3 parents reaching depth two were tilers. There remain 13,424 unresolved plane-tiling classifications.

This tested genuine assumption-core learning over a fixed symbolic shape/corona formula. Three matched arms compared monolithic solving, exact assignment cuts and reduced assumption-core cuts. The main domains used eight parents: two finite 19-hexes, two known H4 non-tilers, two deep hex tilers and two deep square tilers. Shapes occupied finite supports two edge steps beyond their parents, with area 18–20, bounded edits and explicit pose neighborhoods.
Counts describe queries, not necessarily distinct shapes. Equal wall budgets included formula loading and are not equal CPU measurements. Main/follow-up found 25 distinct canonical tilers: two with retained depth two, fifteen with depth three and eight with depth four. There was no certified finite candidate.
Every family cut was independently replayed before insertion. Cores retained activation dependencies. Shape-dependent rejected patches retained the full shape assignment and all pose literals so that alternative witnesses remained available. Periodic counterexamples were independently checked and added behind fresh activation guards with disjoint auxiliary IDs.
Generalization replay found another canonical legal shape refuted in the same oracle background for 10/10 pilot, 10/26 main and 4/4 long sampled cores. Since other accumulated cuts were omitted, this does not measure marginal pruning or establish a discovery advantage.
The 42 main arms ended as 25
master_UNKNOWN, 14oracle_UNKNOWNand three time limits; the six long arms ended 3/2/1 in those categories. Audits checked 370 rejected patches, exact assignments, activation dependencies and adaptive periodic guards. A learned exclusion in a finite symbolic domain is not an official global non-tiler proof.3. Delayed and ambiguous noncyclic grouping
This produced 96 legal shapes: 24 each of H18, H19, H20 and O20. Every shape had two distinct strict two-corona neighborhoods. The experiment used 576 noncyclic group templates, 192 each of orders four, five and six. It compared the same rooted pattern at radii one/two/three and complete re-rooted membership at radii two/three.
There were 17 delayed rooted-recognition cases, only two with strict earlier escapes, and no delayed complete-membership cases between radii two and three. The open-boundary model checked 382 finite patches: 183 admitted finite assignments and 199 had checked refutations. Seventeen of 96 neighborhoods explicitly embedded in actual periodic tilings refuted the proposed grouping there.
All 96 shapes preserved exact parental periodic tilings: 94 also had strict H3 witnesses and two had strict H2 witnesses. The local recognition phenomena therefore yielded no finite candidate or global partition theorem. Independent placement enumeration, SAT geometry, proof payloads, group predicates and periodic embeddings were replayed. The negative result applies to the fixed-context construction strategy; other delayed-grouping constructions remain open.
4. Local role and counting imbalance
The method enumerated complete finite star domains in every central orientation, used proof-backed separation to check a local integer inequality, and sought a finite-box contradiction through reciprocal cancellation and the planar edge-contact degree bound. Participant-level arguments were followed by the unchanged official proof workflow before asserting competition-usable finiteness.
The first proof batch recorded 108 checked proofs, 16 relaxation-SAT outcomes and 67 errors during LRAT core extraction on degenerate H0 formulas (
LRAT references no original clause). These are attempt-level counts: the SAT cases advanced to a deeper proof and are not extra candidate identities. Fresh retries for exactly those 67 failures used the supported DRAT format with the same frozen gate; all 67 passed. Original failure receipts were retained.Independent initial checks covered 210 domain reconstructions, 42 counting certificates, 615 participant proof checks and 1,792 truth-table cases. The later audit replayed 746 strict witness files, 106 periodic certificate files and all 175 proof-bearing witnesses/payload hashes. These totals include separately labeled Hill 3 controls; they are not new candidate counts or a second full LRAT/DRAT-checker run.
The strongest exact finite result was H1. Adaptive samples, failed rationalizations and capped cases remain unresolved unless another accepted certificate resolves them.
5. Periodic thick walls
The research bank contained 30 distinct shapes: eight H18, eight H19, seven H20 and seven O20. All were classified: 15 exact Hc=Hh=0, eight exact Hc=Hh=1 and seven plane tilers. Two separate calibration tilers were excluded from these counts.
The master used motifs of one/two/four/eight copies, pitch four/five and finite supports, forbidding pure translated source self-stacks. Accepted material had to be connected with exactly two complement components and disjoint boundary-vertex sets. Interfaces were restricted to column-convex walls; later searches allowed all tile orientations in recorded cylinders.
The follow-up used the complete height bound
8(D_y+1)for connected motifs of at most eight copies, where D_y is the maximum oriented y-span. It retained bounded periods, at most 32 material sets/queries per case and 15/20-second limits. A missing path concerns only the retained graph. CP-SAT INFEASIBLE excludes its recorded constrained model, without a separate proof certificate in this study; UNKNOWN excludes nothing. The strongest ordinary research witness was H3 for H20
cae16eca5397fe59865fdf7e1809319baf0e2a9d47c2e305a655c00640096661. A checked K=8 torus cover with HNF[20,1,8]proves that it tiles. Calibration tilers yielded the expected deep wall paths and strict H4/H5 witnesses, so the mechanism was exercised.Ten H0 cases hit the same degenerate LRAT/core issue as Hill 4. Fresh supported DRAT attempts passed both required checkers. Twelve failure/error attempt receipts and all successful bundles were preserved; final auditing checked geometry and payload hashes without claiming another full proof-checker replay.
6. Complete bounded-gap column subfamilies
The intended hex family comprises connected, hole-free H18–20 admitting a presentation with at most five nonempty columns, each column either an interval or two intervals separated by one missing cell. The square analogue is O20 with at most four columns and total height at most eight. Membership is existential over legal presentations; identities are free under rotations/reflections and translation. “No-gap” means some allowed presentation is column-convex, otherwise the shape is in the notched arm.
Generation enumerated allowed column masks, pruning only a complete vertical cut with no edge connection. It did not require connected prefixes, since later columns can join components. Frozen geometry and free canonicalization determined the bank. Independent small controls checked column masks and polynomial tuple counts against brute enumeration.
Initial complete pilot strata: H18/H19/H20 c3/h7; O20 c3/h8; H20 c5/h5; O20 c4/h6. Here c is the exact column count and h the maximum height. They contained 5,688 free-shape memberships including two prior identities, yielding 5,686 fresh screened identities.
The square family is complete at its stated height; one/two columns cannot hold twenty cells there. Taller hex strata remain open. Wider height bounds contain narrower strata, so populations must not be summed. The hex height-six expansion admits the incumbent's column geometry, though that fifteen-cell control is outside the area band.
An initial in-memory height-six validator exceeded memory and its failure was preserved. A separate streaming validator independently replayed geometry, free orbits, gaps, membership and prior-bank subtraction for all 3,243,036 shapes in 1,626.55 seconds. The final candidate bank, membership stream and disk-backed identity ledger were hashed after completion.
Screening was much smaller than generation. Across the union of enumerated strata, 5,699 unique fresh identities received completed bounded screen records: 996 constructive tilers, six certified finite non-tilers and 4,697 unresolved. All 5,686 initial-pilot identities were screened; that subset has 988 tilers, five finite shapes and 4,693 unresolved. Widening added only thirteen screened identities beyond the initial pilots.

The unscreened banks, unresolved screened identities and taller hex domains remain opportunities for further work.
Shared official proof batch: fourteen distinct finite leads
The nine Hill 1 leads and five Hill 6-specific leads all completed the unchanged
tools/prove.py --checkworkflow. The result was twelve exact Hc=Hh=2 shapes, one exact Hc=Hh=3 shape and one shape with 2≤Hc≤Hh≤3. The interval shape belongs to both generated families and is counted once in these fourteen identities. All fourteen final results are certified; earlier interrupted attempts remain separate receipts.Shared proof-summary SHA-256:

A native H6 attempt hit CryptoMiniSat's compile-time clause-ID limit, retaining no H6 witness; that was an implementation-limit unknown.
Later periodic search at K=9…12 found K=12 with lattice generators (15,0) and (7,16). Twelve copies cover all 240 quotient cells exactly once. Two independent multiplicity replays checked legal affine grid symmetries, twenty distinct cells per tile, pairwise disjointness and complete coverage. Lifting this quotient cover proves a plane tiling. K=12 is a found period, with no minimality claim.
The fixed-patch optimizer separately checked 41,750 one-copy H4 replacement pairs and 63,984 H5 replacement pairs, retaining thirteen alternatives at each level. The best saved partial-six geometry had defect 27 over 233 required cells—26 uncovered plus one pocket—for geometric score 5.884120. Sixteen of 56 planned optimization seeds completed, four retained in-progress witnesses and 36 were unstarted when the tiling certificate made scoring impossible. This optimization was deliberately stopped and is not reported as fully run.
All fourteen complete H5 patches in that one-copy neighborhood had at least three directly unfillable required sixth-corona cells. Yet the same shape tiles the plane. Closure of a fixed patch or its small replacement neighborhood does not imply finite Heesch number.
Here is a self-contained standard-library Python replay of the complete tiling certificate. Save it as

Research-side cuts, periodic misses and strict geometry never substitute for that gate.
Final cross-campaign evidence audit
The final v4 audit passed with the following scope. These are artifact/file counts and include repeated candidate identities and controls.
.heeschfiles inventoriedThe other 370
.heeschfiles are deliberately retained Hill 2 rejected-patch diagnostics: 278 main and 92 long. Each has a specific saved hash and expectedPATCH_HOLE_IN_CORONAfailure. None is counted as accepted evidence. Earlier argument-packaging, first-invalid-file and discovery-inventory audit runs were preserved, and exact declarations were added before the passing audit; result data were not overwritten to manufacture a pass. The audit rechecked geometry, torus multiplicities, summary bindings and proof payload hashes. Mandatory LRAT/DRAT checker passes belong to the original successful frozen proof runs; v4 does not claim fresh large-proof checker invocations.

It is an empirical lesson from these banks, not a theorem that deep witnesses usually come from tilers. Large unscreened column banks, unresolved shallow screens and alternative constructions remain open.
