MB Tools

Find, flash and talk to BBC micro:bits across a fleet of hosts: one registry daemon per host, plus clients that reach any board by name.

  • Command reference: all four programs, their flags, common flows, and the exit-code contract.
  • Installing mbtools: install from GitHub with uv or pip (not PyPI), per-OS prerequisites, and USB access on Linux.
  • Networking and peering: ports, mDNS services, --peer, the auth token and its gap, advertised addresses, and firewall rules.
  • Robot-console compatibility: the relay pool (7444) and /names API (7445) that let robot-console use mbregistry in place of the old mbrelay server.
  • Service on Linux (systemd): mbregistry install-service, the unit and udev rule it writes, drop-ins, logs, upgrade and uninstall. Covers Raspberry Pi OS, Debian and Ubuntu.
  • Service on macOS (launchd): LaunchDaemon (root, at boot) and LaunchAgent (per user) plists, with the launchctl commands to run them.
  • Service on Windows (not hardware-verified): the sc.exe commands install-service prints, the named pipe, and what is untested.
  • Start here: what mbtools is, its four programs, which page answers what, and the known gaps.
  • Troubleshooting: diagnosis steps for agents: daemon unreachable, port in use, 127.0.1.1, USB permission denied, stale peers.

🔒 Internal: Machine names, IPs, SSH access and per-host status are on the internal wiki → Robot Garage wiki (garage LAN only)
