A packaging release — like 0.7.1, nothing inside the app has changed. If you
installed Crest from GitHub, this version behaves exactly as 0.7.1 did. Every
panel, preference, animation and keystroke is untouched, and the update that is
about to install itself quietly is one you will not be able to see afterwards.
What it adds is a second way to distribute Crest: a Microsoft Store package,
built from the same source and stamped with the same version as the installer.
The two are one binary in two wrappers, so most of the work was teaching Crest to
notice which wrapper it is running inside and use the right mechanism for it.
New
- A Microsoft Store package. Built off the same
tauri.conf.jsonversion the
installer uses, so the two distribution paths can never drift into describing
themselves as different releases. The Store listing is not live yet — this is
the build path being finished, not an announcement - Crest asks Windows how it was installed rather than being told when it is
built. A compile-time flag would decide this at build time, so a release built
with the wrong one would be a Crest that either never starts with Windows or
writes a startup entry that outlives its own uninstall — both of which look fine
until someone logs in. Asked at runtime, it cannot be got wrong by a build - A privacy policy at crest-beta.vercel.app/privacy.
A plain account of what Crest touches, what it keeps on your machine, and the
only two services it ever talks to — Open-Meteo for the forecast of a place you
typed in yourself, and GitHub to see whether there is a newer version. There is
no third one, and the source is there to check it against
Improved
- Starting with Windows uses the mechanism each build is supposed to use. The
installer keeps the scheduled task it has always used, because Explorer's own
startup queue runs ten deep on a normal machine and put Crest on screen minutes
after login. A packaged build uses the startup task its manifest declares, which
is the one Windows expects and the one the Startup tab in Task Manager can
switch off - The Store build leaves updating to the Store. Crest updates itself silently,
and what it downloads is an installer — which cannot service a packaged app, and
would at best leave a second Crest on the machine, the two of them suppressing
each other at boot while the Store still reported everything up to date. So a
packaged build does not check, does not install, and drops the tray's update row
rather than offering an action that cannot succeed. Nothing changes for the
installer, which still checks shortly after launch and every six hours, as it
always has
Fixed
- The site's sitemap pointed at
localhost. It was built from an environment
variable nobody had set on the host, so the live sitemap advertised
http://localhost:3000for every page on it — including the privacy policy,
which is the one URL that has to stay findable. It reads the real domain now,
and only falls back to localhost where that is genuinely where it is running
