Video themes no longer eat your memory. Applying one froze the app for
several seconds and then held gigabytes of RAM for as long as the theme stayed
loaded — measured at just under 7 GB for a one-minute video on a 1600×720
panel. On a machine with 8 or 16 GB that is most of your headroom, and once the
system starts swapping everything gets slow, which is why some of you saw the
app stutter when doing something unrelated like switching panels. TRCC was
preparing every single frame of the video in advance and keeping them all as
uncompressed images. It now prepares each frame as it plays it, the way
Thermalright's own Windows software does. Same video, same panel: the freeze
is gone and memory is under 100 MB. (#264, #256)
This was never only about long videos — a stock cloud theme from the gallery
was costing 1.8 GB on a widescreen panel.
Video themes also load faster. Applying one takes about a quarter of the
time it used to, because the frames are kept compressed instead of being
expanded the moment the theme opens.
Live readings stopped being frozen. If you run TRCC from the command line
rather than the app — trcc led play for a LED cooler, trcc display play for
an LCD — every sensor value was read once at startup and then never again. A
memory-temperature readout would sit at whatever it was when you launched,
forever. It refreshes properly now. The desktop app and the background daemon
were never affected. (#270, thank you [@rjstanford-it] for diagnosing this
precisely from the outside.)
Diagnostic reports keep the part that matters. With a cloud theme applied,
one line was being written to the log for every frame rendered — a hundred a
second — so by the time you sent us a report, the record of what you had
actually done had already scrolled away. That noise is gone.
