v0.1.0-alpha.1 (alpha, evaluation only)
Alpha release, for evaluation only. This is an alpha version of the Lightbits primary storage plugin for Apache CloudStack, meant for evaluation in lab and proof-of-concept environments. It should not be used in production environments or on clusters that hold production data. Configuration and behavior may change between alpha releases without a migration path.
What's in this alpha
Lightbits NVMe/TCP block storage as managed primary storage for Apache CloudStack on KVM. Each CloudStack volume is its own Lightbits volume, connected to the KVM hosts over NVMe/TCP.
- Cluster-wide and zone-wide Lightbits primary storage pools, each authenticated with a project-scoped token (stored encrypted)
- VM root disks from templates as native Lightbits snapshot + clone (template cached once per pool)
- Data disks: create, attach, detach, delete, with per-host NQN access control (host NQN registered automatically)
- Volume snapshots: take, revert, delete, create volume from snapshot
- Volume resize (grow) while the VM is stopped
- Replica count per volume (1 to 3) through the
lightbitsReplicasoffering detail; per-pool compression and QoS policy, per-offering QoS override - Live migration of running VMs between KVM hosts, including host maintenance evacuation
- Full cluster-side cleanup when a pool is deleted
Known limitations
- TLS certificate validation is not done in this version. The connection to the Lightbits API is encrypted, but the plugin accepts any certificate the endpoint presents. Run the alpha on an isolated lab or evaluation network. Certificate validation, on by default, is planned for a future version.
- Resizing a disk attached to a running VM is not possible (CloudStack restricts it for out-of-tree managed KVM storage). Shrinking is not supported.
- KVM only.
Tested with
- Apache CloudStack 4.22.1.0 (KVM)
- Lightbits 3.19 and 3.20
Install
Download the jar and install.sh, then follow INSTALL.md. The same jar goes on the management server and on every KVM host. Verify the downloads with sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.
