I consider this kernel 4.19 ROM to be no longer in beta due to lack of reported issues compared to the kernel 4.4 ROM.

Changes:

  • Oct. 2026 Android platform security patch
  • FM radio app:
    • Remove unnecessary permissions (NOTE: saved preferences and stations will be lost after updating)
    • Optional location detection for resetting location-specific station information for new scans after moving more than 100 miles
    • Remove log spam during Bluetooth playing
  • Add infrastructure for WiFi calling (not proven to work yet - please report if you have success)
  • "sym" key brings up virtual symbols page on default AOSP keyboard (LatinIME)
  • Change default settings with clean ROM install:
    • Disable showing virtual keyboard when typing
    • Reduce display size (3/7 in Settings/Display/Display size and text) to better match stock BB Android 8.1
    • Change keyboard and navigation button backlight timeouts to 10 seconds to match stock BB Android 8.1
  • Display sizes 1/7, 2/7, 3/7 rounded up (294->300, 336->340, 378->380; avoids old values falling just below some application layout thresholds)
  • Give Settings/System/BlackBerry settings top position and new icon
  • Fix far-end voice echo during VOIP calls
  • Fix intermittent green-tinted photos taken with flash in dark conditions
  • Defensive changes to try to prevent rare Synaptics touchscreen failure (including in recovery)

Known Issues:

  • None compared to kernel 4.4 (v1.13a). If you notice anything, please report it!

Notes:

  • If you are using adoptable/internal SD storage on kernel 4.4 ROM (v1.10a-v1.13a): Before updating to v1.21a, migrate/backup all apps/files from the SD card, format the SD card as normal/portable storage, then repeat formatting as adoptable/internal storage after updating to v1.21a
  • Default ZRAM compression changed to LZ4 in kernel, but if you had previously forced a compression algorithm with persist.vendor.key2.zram.compressor, that manual override will persist. It is recommended to switch to LZ4 - see last section below.

Update Instructions:

  • You cannot update to this ROM if you are running a Krab-v1.20+ or Krab-2.0+ build unless you wipe userdata
  • If you are running a ZKrab Key2 ROM from v1.9a-v1.13a: Download "lineage-22.2-20261010-UNOFFICIAL-zkrab-v1.21a-athena.zip" to your Key2 and perform local update through Settings/System/System updates/3-dot menu/Local update - Userdata wipe NOT needed!
    • You can return to v1.13a (kernel 4.4) with the same method if you experience issues with this build (again no userdata wipe needed)
  • If you are already running v1.20b or higher: Perform an OTA update on your Key2 through Settings/System/System updates (the OTA update is downloaded from the first link below)
  • If you are currently running stock Blackberry Android 8.1 or an older LineageOS version, download "LOS22_Key2_ZKrab-v1.21a.zip" to your PC and follow this guide for install instructions: https://daphnis-past-midnight.nekoweb.org/wiki/key2.html

Choose ZRAM Compression Algorithm

  • To switch to lz4 compression (other options are lzo and zstd, but lz4 is recommended):
    adb root
    adb shell setprop persist.vendor.key2.zram.compressor lz4
    adb reboot
    (after reboot confirm change with:)
    adb root
    adb shell cat /sys/block/zram0/comp_algorithm
