EnigmaGrid 0.4.3 — Clearer updates and experimental search support

Choose a tag to compare

@LissomEnd LissomEnd released this 03 Oct 19:43

EnigmaGrid 0.4.3 adds Windows client support for an additional experimental Enigma M4 search.

  • Bounded CPU work with indexed, reproducible jobs and explicit budget-cutoff results.
  • Pause, stop and CPU resource controls for the additional engine.
  • Capability negotiation so older clients continue receiving supported work.
  • More accurate hardware reporting when GPUs are detected but not qualified for computation.

The existing campaign is retained. The additional research hypotheses have no demonstrated recovery advantage, and no decryption is claimed. Matching results verify computation, not historical interpretation. Different hypotheses can revisit mechanical settings; the project does not claim globally unique coverage.

This is an optional update. Download EnigmaGridSetup.exe for installation or use Check for updates in the Windows client. Existing identity and preferences are preserved by the updater.

Update usability: a dedicated update panel shows checking, up-to-date, download, deferred, ready and error states. Manual checks run during computation and let you reconsider postponed updates. Resource and contribution labels are clearer.

EnigmaGrid 0.4.2 — GPU duty control fix

Choose a tag to compare

@LissomEnd LissomEnd released this 03 Oct 16:08

GPU work/rest timing now respects the requested duty ratio when scoring takes longer than expected. Previously, a one-second cap on rest could make low GPU budgets run more intensely than intended. The client also checks pause controls during the rest period.

This is a recommended, optional Windows update. It preserves contributor identity and settings; the minimum supported version remains 0.4.0. GPU settings control work/rest timing, not an exact percentage in Task Manager.

Validation: source CI, official Windows build, frozen worker/tray and installer lifecycle tests, real 0.4.1-to-0.4.2 optional/required accept-and-decline scenarios, active-work update boundaries, and rollback after an intentionally failed health check. The candidate also passed worker/tray self-tests on Surface with Intel Iris Plus OpenCL detected. This is not a claim of testing every GPU.

Download EnigmaGridSetup.exe for installation. The ZIP is the update package. Updates are authenticated with the project's Ed25519 signature, and both Windows assets have GitHub build attestations. The installer is not Authenticode-signed.

The research campaign is unchanged. No decryption breakthrough is claimed.

EnigmaGrid 0.4.1 — Windows reliability fix

EnigmaGrid 0.4.1 — Windows reliability fix

Recommended update for all Windows volunteers.

Fixed

Version 0.4.0 could stop its worker when Windows briefly locked the local status file during a read or antivirus inspection. The app restarted the worker and leases were recoverable, but ongoing work could be repeated. Atomic state writes now retry temporary locks and remove temporary files. A failed status-only write no longer aborts computation or network heartbeats. Credential and control writes still report persistent failures.

Checks

The regression suite reproduces a real Windows file-sharing lock, verifies recovery, and checks that persistent errors are not hidden for durable state. CPU/GPU resource and pause tests, security and HTTP tests, and the frozen client/installer pipeline also run for this release. Packages have GitHub provenance attestations, SHA-256 checksums and a signed update manifest.

The exact public installer was downloaded and hash-checked on a physical Surface with Intel Iris Plus. Upgrade preserved its existing identity and settings. During real CPU+GPU computation, 60 forced status-file locks caused no worker restart or unhandled exception; the same process recovered its health updates and completed a production job accepted by the coordinator (pending independent reproduction). Signed update success and intentional rollback passed against the exact release ZIP.

Help

Bug reports, installation questions and feature requests are welcome at https://github.com/LissomEnd/EnigmaGrid/issues/new/choose. See SUPPORT.md for troubleshooting. Never include credentials or unredacted personal data in public reports; use private security reporting for vulnerabilities.

Install and limitations

Download EnigmaGridSetup.exe and run it to install or update. Existing contributor identity and settings are preserved. The installer waits for the current job to finish. Volunteers do not need Python, administrator rights or Tailscale.

Windows x64. CPU and optional qualified OpenCL GPU computation. AMD integrated graphics and Intel Iris Plus have been physically tested; NVIDIA and all possible drivers are not guaranteed. The EXEs are not Authenticode-signed. Signed update metadata verifies origin/integrity, not absence of defects. Independent volunteer reproduction is required before final credit; a single contributor can accumulate pending work while verified progress remains zero.

The project is independent of Veritasium. No historical decryption has been confirmed.

EnigmaGrid 0.4.0 — First public release

@LissomEnd LissomEnd released this 03 Oct 09:03

Recommended: upgrade to 0.4.1. Version 0.4.0 can restart its worker when Windows temporarily locks the status file; 0.4.1 fixes this reliability issue.

EnigmaGrid 0.4.0 — first public release

Donate spare computing time to investigate the unresolved P1030680 Enigma M4 message. This independent project is not affiliated with Veritasium and does not claim a confirmed decryption.

Install

Download EnigmaGridSetup.exe below. Windows x64, current-user installation, no Python or administrator account required. Choose a display name, explicitly consent to resource use, and set CPU/GPU limits. Tailscale is not needed on volunteer computers.

CPU computation works without a GPU. Compatible OpenCL GPUs are enabled only after a local CPU/GPU equivalence check. AMD integrated graphics and Intel Iris Plus have been physically tested; NVIDIA and other drivers have not been independently release-tested. CPU limits control the thread budget; GPU limits control work/rest scheduling, not exact Task Manager percentages. Changes apply to the next job. Pause and safe stop are available.

Trust and privacy

  • Public source, automated tests, GitHub artifact attestations, published SHA-256 checksums and an Ed25519-signed update manifest.
  • Structured research jobs only; the coordinator does not send arbitrary commands to volunteer PCs.
  • Windows credentials protected with DPAPI; server credentials stored as hashes. Public credit is optional and off by default in the app.
  • Results require independent reproduction before credit. Progress measures this scheduled heuristic search, not the probability of a solution.
  • Read the privacy policy and security policy in the repository. Report vulnerabilities privately using the Security tab.

Validation and limits

The release pipeline tests the frozen worker, consensus and installer lifecycle. Source CI covers malformed requests, transport safety, resource controls, pause/resume and safe uninstall. The public HTTPS service has been checked from a GitHub-hosted runner outside the private network. Real Intel and AMD hardware tests supplement CI, which does not provide a physical GPU.

The EXEs are not Authenticode-signed; Windows may display an Unknown Publisher/SmartScreen warning. Release signatures and provenance establish origin and integrity, not absence of defects. The coordinator currently uses a restricted current-user Windows deployment; it is not an independently audited or fully sandboxed service. Internet and host availability can interrupt work; leases are reissued safely.

Assets

  • EnigmaGridSetup.exe: recommended installer.
  • enigma-volunteer-windows.zip: complete worker/update package.
  • update-manifest.json and .sig: signed update metadata.
  • SHA256SUMS.txt: hashes of the published files.
