Installing

Kurenai needs macOS 14 or newer and runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

With Homebrew

brew install --cask lorder19/tap/kurenai

Then continue from step 3 below. To update later: brew upgrade --cask kurenai.

By hand

  1. Download Kurenai.zip from the latest release.
  2. Unzip it and drag Kurenai.app into your Applications folder. If you open it straight from Downloads, Kurenai will offer to move itself, because login items and Accessibility break when an app runs from a temporary location.
  3. Open Kurenai. macOS will say it can't verify the developer. That's because Kurenai isn't signed with a paid Apple developer certificate yet.
  4. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the Kurenai message. On macOS 15 and later the old right click > Open trick no longer works, this is the only way.
  5. Kurenai shows a welcome window. Click the button to open Accessibility settings and switch Kurenai on.

That's it. The Kurenai icon is in the menu bar.

Updating

Quit Kurenai, replace the app in Applications with the new one, open it. Your history and settings stay. You can turn on a daily update check in Settings, it's off by default.
