The name "oneAS" stands for One-Armed Scientist—a direct tribute to a legendary 1970s United States Senate hearing led by Senator Edmund Muskie.
During an intense cross-examination regarding environmental pollutants, Muskie grew deeply frustrated with a panel of academic and data experts. Every time he asked a direct question about the data's meaning, the scientists would hedge their answers, stating: "Well, Mr. Senator, on the one hand, the numbers point to X... but on the other hand, the variables could suggest Y."
Exasperated by the back-and-forth indecisiveness, Muskie famously cut them off and declared that he wanted to find a "One-Armed Scientist"—so his experts would finally be physically incapable of saying, "On the other hand!"
