Muxin 0.5.8

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 23:57

Muxin is a desktop app that puts all your computers in one window: Macs, Linux servers, Windows PCs and cloud machines. Run AI coding agents on them, see their screens and check their logs. Your AI agents can use it too.

This release has ten fixes, most of them from your reports and pull requests.

What's new

  • Type Chinese in terminals. With Pinyin or another input method, Muxin's terminals now go through it: what you're composing shows at the cursor, the candidate window opens there, and the finished text goes to the program. Before, your keys went straight to the program. (#5)
  • Code folders, in Settings. Settings › General › Code folders lists where Muxin looks for your checkouts, and you can add your own, like ~/app. Fix with agent and Review with agent then work in a worktree of your checkout, on its own branch, instead of a fresh clone. When they find no checkout, the dialog says where to add its folder. (#15)
  • Muxin finds the GitHub CLI on Windows machines. A Windows machine's Git card always said the GitHub CLI wasn't installed, and didn't know git signs in with it. Signing in to GitHub there from Muxin works now too. (#21)
  • The shared clipboard keeps your newest copy. When you shared the clipboard with a Linux desktop, a copy on your Mac could be replaced about a second later by an older one. Muxin no longer puts an older copy over a newer one. Text like é or 日本 now gets to and from a Mac intact, too. (#20)
  • Add a machine lists only computers. With Tailscale's Mullvad add-on, it offered hundreds of Mullvad's VPN servers as machines to add, and Tailscale's hello.ts.net demo device. They're left out now. (#16)
  • Terminals on Macs keep letters like é. When Muxin's helper on a Mac started without a language setting (for direct connections, or with Muxin opened from the Dock), so did its terminals: bash dropped an é as you typed it, and ls showed ? for it. Terminals now get UTF-8 when they'd have no setting.
  • You can type / in text fields. It jumped to Search instead, so you couldn't type a folder like ~/app or a repository like acme/api.
  • Long folders fit in a session's header. The folder goes onto its own line and wraps.
  • Safer helper updates. Muxin sends its helper to each machine over ssh. If the connection dropped partway, the cut-off file replaced the working helper, and the machine had none until the next try. Now the new file has to match the build before it replaces anything.
  • Builds from source find their helper. A Muxin built from source couldn't find the helper builds it installs on machines. It now uses its checkout's builds, or a helper built next to it with cargo build --workspace. (#18)

Thanks to @raylenzed (#5) and @spuder (#17, #19) for their pull requests, and to @spuder, @mihaijoldis, @fwends and @nobody-ops for their reports.

Install

Homebrew (macOS and Linux): brew install --cask lumarylabsllc/tap/muxin

macOS (12 or later, Apple silicon or Intel): open Muxin-0.5.8-macos.dmg and drag Muxin to Applications. It's signed and notarized, so it opens without a warning.

Linux (glibc 2.35 or newer: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36, openSUSE Tumbleweed, RHEL 10 and later), for Intel and AMD (x86_64) or Arm (aarch64):

  • Debian and Ubuntu: sudo apt install ./Muxin-0.5.8-linux-x86_64.deb
  • Fedora, openSUSE and RHEL: sudo dnf install ./Muxin-0.5.8-linux-x86_64.rpm (or sudo zypper install)
  • Arch: yay -S muxin-bin from the AUR, or sudo pacman -U Muxin-0.5.8-linux-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
  • Any distribution: Muxin-0.5.8-linux-x86_64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it. It needs no FUSE 2.
  • Without root: unpack Muxin-0.5.8-linux-x86_64.tar.gz and run ./Muxin/install.sh. Run ./Muxin/install.sh --uninstall to remove it.

Use aarch64 in place of x86_64 on Arm.

Windows 11: Muxin-0.5.8-windows-x64-setup.exe for Intel and AMD, or Muxin-0.5.8-windows-arm64-setup.exe for Windows on Arm. It installs for you, without administrator rights. The installer isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. The .zip files have the same app, unpacked.

Muxin sets up its own small helper on each machine you add. Your machines only need ssh with a key.

Security

This release fixes problems a security researcher reported privately. Please update, especially if you copy files between machines, sync workspaces, or use Windows machines.

  • Copying files only writes what you asked for. Before, a compromised machine you copied from could add other files next to yours on the other machine. Links that point outside what you copy are now left out.
  • Pulling a workspace back no longer brings its .git folder. A compromised workspace machine could have planted a command there that git status would run on your computer.
  • On Windows machines, a typographic quote can't break out. A ’ in a prompt or command could end its quoting and run what followed.
  • Smaller fixes.
    • Your GitHub token goes to a workspace only when GitHub says the repository is private.
    • Runner downloads are checked against GitHub's checksums, and runner tokens stay off command lines.
    • On Windows, runner folders can only be changed by administrators and you.
    • muxin cloud login --token - reads the token from standard input, so it stays out of your shell history.
    • Unpairing or removing a machine turns off only this app's direct connection.
    • On Windows machines, the direct connection answers only your local network and Tailscale.
    • GH_TOKEN and GITHUB_TOKEN go only to github.com, and a GitHub Enterprise address must use https.
    • Muxin's files that hold tokens are private to you from the moment they're written.
    • Muxin installs its helper on your machines only from its own files, never from a folder above it.
    • The release pipeline is pinned and locked down.

Thanks to the security researcher who reported these privately.

What changes for you

  • The shared clipboard is off until you turn it on, in Settings › General › Clipboard. If you turned it on yourself before, it stays on. Copies from password managers aren't shared (except from the app on Linux, which can't tell them apart yet), and text a program in a terminal copies stays on your computer.
  • Workspace pulls bring files back, not commits. Commit in your own checkout.

What's new

  • Typing Chinese on a Mac no longer crashes Muxin. With an input method like Pinyin or WeType, Muxin crashed after a while: typing some text, deleting it, then typing again confused its text fields. They now work in every language. (#1)
  • Muxin for Windows sees your Linux machines again. It showed every Linux machine as offline, with sh: \r: not found. (#2)
  • Windows machines in any language connect. Muxin recognized a Windows machine by an English error message, so a Chinese one, for example, stayed at "Can't connect". (#3)
  • On Linux, Muxin starts from a terminal. Started from a terminal, like an AppImage run by hand, it stopped right away with "Stopped (tty input)".
  • Muxin's window has its name on Wayland. App switchers like COSMIC's showed it as "unknown".
  • A crash log. If Muxin ever crashes, it writes what happened to crash.log in ~/.config/muxin (%APPDATA%\muxin on Windows). Its helper on each machine writes ~/.muxen/crash.log. Attach it to a bug report.
  • Security fixes in rustls, which Muxin uses for its encrypted connections.

Thanks to @artyomx33 for the fixes in #10, #12 and #8, and to @mintisan and @julioaraujo-web for their reports.

What's new

  • New cloud machines work again where DigitalOcean is short on sizes. DigitalOcean offers no basic sizes in some of its datacenters, New York's among them. The New cloud machine dialog listed them anyway and showed no sizes, so you couldn't create one. Now it lists only the cities with sizes on offer, picks a nearby one, and always has a size ready.

Muxin is a desktop app that puts all your computers in one window: Macs, Linux servers, Windows PCs and cloud machines. Run AI coding agents on them, see their screens and check their logs. Your AI agents can use it too.

What's new

  • The app icon looks right on macOS 26. macOS 26 showed Muxin's icon small, on a grey tile, in Spotlight, Finder and the Dock. It now fills its space like other apps' icons. If you still see the old one after updating, run killall Dock.

0.5.3, a few minutes earlier, added update notices (so this one shows in the sidebar if you're on 0.5.3) and a proper window frame on Linux under Wayland.

Install

Homebrew (macOS and Linux): brew install --cask lumarylabsllc/tap/muxin

Muxin is a desktop app that puts all your computers in one window: Macs, Linux servers, Windows PCs and cloud machines. Run AI coding agents on them, see their screens and check their logs. Your AI agents can use it too.

What's new

  • Muxin tells you when a new version is out. The sidebar says so, and About shows how to update the copy you have: with Homebrew or the AUR, or the new file to download. It asks GitHub for the latest release when it opens and twice a day. Turn it off in Settings › General › Updates. muxin updates checks from a terminal.
  • Linux on Wayland has a proper window frame. On GNOME, the default on Ubuntu and Fedora, Muxin's window had no title bar buttons and couldn't be moved or resized from its edges. Now it has minimize, maximize and close, moves when you drag the top bar, maximizes on a double-click and resizes from its edges.

Muxin is a desktop app that puts all your computers in one window: Macs, Linux servers, Windows PCs and cloud machines. Run AI coding agents on them, see their screens and check their logs. Your AI agents can use it too.

What's new

  • Linux packages. Each release now has a .deb for Debian and Ubuntu, an .rpm for Fedora, openSUSE and RHEL, an Arch package and an AppImage, for Intel and AMD and for Arm. Each one installs what Muxin needs, adds it to your app menu and puts muxin in your PATH.
  • The AUR. On Arch, yay -S muxin-bin.
  • The AppImage runs with FUSE 3, so it works on current Arch and Fedora without installing fuse2.
  • Settings › Command line knows when a package or Homebrew installed the command, and an AppImage's command runs the AppImage itself.

What's new

  • Muxen is now Muxin. Same app, new name, matching muxin.dev. The command is muxin, and muxen still works.
  • Your setup carries over. Settings, machines, sessions and cloud sign-ins stay as they were. On a Mac, the old Muxen app goes to the Trash the first time Muxin opens.
  • Homebrew. Install it on macOS or Linux with brew install --cask lumarylabsllc/tap/muxin.

Install

Homebrew (macOS and Linux): brew install --cask lumarylabsllc/tap/muxin

macOS (12 or later, Apple silicon or Intel): open Muxin-0.5.1-macos.dmg and drag Muxin to Applications. It's signed and notarized, so it opens without a warning.

Linux (glibc 2.35 or newer: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 and later): Muxin-0.5.1-linux-x86_64.tar.gz for Intel and AMD, or Muxin-0.5.1-linux-aarch64.tar.gz for Arm.

tar -xzf Muxin-0.5.1-linux-x86_64.tar.gz

Muxen is a desktop app that puts all your computers in one window: Macs, Linux servers, Windows PCs and cloud machines. Run AI coding agents on them, see their screens and check their logs. Your AI agents can use it too.

What's new

  • From change to pull request. Ask an agent to commit, push, open a pull request, review its work, fix the review comments or resolve conflicts, from a session's Actions menu. Each action types a prompt into the agent. Change any of them in Settings › Prompts.
  • See what each session changed. Every session shows its branch, the lines and files it changed, its commits and uncommitted files, and its pull request with the checks.
  • Worktrees. Start a session in a new git worktree of a checkout that's already on the machine. It's quicker than a clone and gets its own branch, so several agents can work on one repository at once. Issues you start from GitHub use a worktree when there's a checkout.
  • Clean up when it's merged. When a workspace's pull request is merged, the Workspaces page offers to remove it. The branch is kept.
  • For your agents too. MCP has session_action, and the CLI has muxen session do. muxen ws ls and muxen session ls show each one's git.
  • Answering a Codex question that has numbered options now works every time.

Install

macOS (12 or later, Apple silicon or Intel): open Muxen-0.5.0-macos.dmg and drag Muxen to Applications. It's signed and notarized, so it opens without a warning.

Linux (glibc 2.35 or newer: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 and later): Muxen-0.5.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz for Intel and AMD, or Muxen-0.5.0-linux-aarch64.tar.gz for Arm.

tar -xzf Muxen-0.5.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
./Muxen/install.sh

It installs for you, without root, and adds Muxen to your app menu. Run ./Muxen/install.sh --uninstall to remove it.

  • Muxen is open source, under the Apache License 2.0. The code is right here.
  • Arm builds for Linux and Windows. Muxen now runs natively on Linux on Arm and on Windows on Arm, next to the Intel and AMD builds.
  • Windows on Arm machines. Muxen can now set up its agent on Windows PCs with Arm processors, so you can manage them too.
  • Every download includes Muxen's license and the licenses of what it's built with.

Install

macOS (12 or later, Apple silicon or Intel): open Muxen-0.4.0-macos.dmg and drag Muxen to Applications. It's signed and notarized, so it opens without a warning.

Linux (glibc 2.35 or newer: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 and later): Muxen-0.4.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz for Intel and AMD, or Muxen-0.4.0-linux-aarch64.tar.gz for Arm.

tar -xzf Muxen-0.4.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
./Muxen/install.sh

It installs for you, without root, and adds Muxen to your app menu. Run ./Muxen/install.sh --uninstall to remove it.

Windows 11: Muxen-0.4.0-windows-x64-setup.exe for Intel and AMD, or Muxen-0.4.0-windows-arm64-setup.exe for Windows on Arm. It installs for you, without administrator rights. The installer isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. The .zip files have the same app, unpacked.

Muxen sets up its own small helper on each machine you add. Your machines only need ssh with a key.
