FrameBurst v1.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 03 Oct 03:26

FrameBurst 1.4.0

A redesigned interface: a calmer Settings window, a frosted-glass capture toolbar, and capture tools that
finally scale properly on high-DPI displays.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.4.0.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, open Settings › About and choose
Check for updates. Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit). A Direct3D 11 GPU is recommended.

New look

  • Settings groups related options into sections instead of a separate card for every row, with clearer
headings and a flatter About page. FrameBurst blue is now the accent everywhere (buttons, toggles,
selection, focus) in both light and dark mode.
  • Capture toolbar and hint are frosted glass that picks up the colours of your screen, with new icons
from the same Segoe Fluent set as Settings and clearer hover, pressed, selected and disabled states.
  • Size label, magnifier and colour picker use the same rounded panels and a monospace readout.
  • Dialogs and the tray menu match the new style; dialogs use a translucent acrylic background.

Improvements

  • The capture toolbar, hint, magnifier and colour picker now scale with the display scaling of the monitor
they're on. Before, they were drawn at a fixed pixel size and looked small at 150 % and above.
  • The Settings window can be resized smaller: below 760 px the navigation shrinks to icons, and below about
520 px each setting moves its control under its description.
  • Esc closes Settings without saving and Ctrl+S saves. (While a hotkey box has focus, keys are still
    recorded as the hotkey.)
  • Update status and save errors now show an icon as well as colour, and screen readers announce update
status changes and name every setting's control.
  • With Transparency effects off or a high-contrast theme on, the glass surfaces switch to solid panels.

Fixes

  • The last lines of a long message (for example update release notes) could be cut off at the bottom of a
    dialog.
  • Exiting FrameBurst while the tray menu was open could show an error.

Good to know

  • Hotkeys, capture, file output and all settings work exactly as before; this release only changes how
    FrameBurst looks.

FrameBurst v1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 01 Oct 07:47

FrameBurst 1.3.0

FrameBurst now works on PCs whose graphics hardware can't run its Direct3D 11 capture path.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.3.0.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, open Settings › About and choose
Check for updates. Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit). A Direct3D 11 GPU is recommended.

New

  • GDI fallback capture. If no GPU supports Direct3D 11 (feature level 11.0), the system is running on the
Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or Windows Graphics Capture isn't available, FrameBurst now captures with
GDI BitBlt instead of failing. It switches automatically and stays on GDI for the rest of the session.
  • If a GPU capture fails for any other reason, FrameBurst retries that capture once with GDI before showing
    an error.
  • The capture notification shows GDI instead of the GPU name when the fallback was used, and the switch
    is recorded in %APPDATA%\FrameBurst\frameburst.log.

Good to know

  • GDI capture is slower. It copies each monitor through the CPU, so on large multi-monitor setups expect
noticeably longer capture times than the ~45 ms GPU path.
  • With GDI, monitors are copied one after another rather than at the same instant, captures are 8-bit SDR
only (no HDR copy), and some hardware-accelerated or full-screen content may come out black.
  • PCs with a working Direct3D 11 GPU behave exactly as before.

FrameBurst v1.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 01 Oct 07:02

FrameBurst 1.2.1

A small visual fix for the About page added in 1.2.0.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.2.1.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, open Settings › About and choose
Check for updates. Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

Fixes

  • The FrameBurst logo on the About page was blurry. It now uses the full-resolution 256 px artwork.
  • The Cash App logo on the Tip button is now a sharp vector image of the real logo, so it stays crisp
    at any display scaling.

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 01 Oct 06:52

FrameBurst 1.2.0

Settings has a new About page. You can now check for and install updates from inside FrameBurst.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.2.0.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, open Settings › About and choose
Check for updates. Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

What's new

About page

  • Settings › Updates is now Settings › About. It shows a short description of FrameBurst, the version
you have installed, and links to the release notes and source code.

Updates from inside the app

  • Choose Check for updates on the About page. If a new version is out, press Download and install.
FrameBurst downloads the update, shows a progress bar, checks the file against GitHub's SHA-256 checksum,
installs the update in the background and restarts. You don't need to download the installer yourself.
  • Check for updates in the tray menu now opens the About page and starts the check.
  • Automatic daily checks still work as before. You can turn them on or off on the same page.

Support FrameBurst

  • New Tip button on the About page. It opens Cash App ($LunoviaVR). FrameBurst stays free and open source.

FrameBurst v1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 01 Oct 06:38

FrameBurst 1.1.0

FrameBurst can now save HDR screenshots. It's off by default, so nothing changes unless you turn it on.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.1.0.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, it will offer this update on its own
(or choose Check for updates from the tray menu). Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

What's new

HDR screenshots (optional)

  • New setting: Settings › Output › Save HDR copy. It's off by default.
  • When it's on and you capture an area that includes a monitor with Windows HDR turned on, FrameBurst also
saves a second file next to the normal one, named …_HDR.png.
  • The HDR file is a 16-bit PNG in BT.2100 PQ (BT.2020 colours), tagged so HDR-aware viewers such as
Chrome, Edge and recent image editors show the full brightness range. The conversion runs on the GPU like
    the rest of the capture.
  • The normal PNG, the clipboard and the editor work exactly as before, so you can still paste and share
    screenshots anywhere.
  • The HDR copy is the unedited capture: annotations and the mouse cursor only go into the normal PNG.
  • Nothing extra is saved for SDR monitors, or when Save to file is off.

FrameBurst v1.0.3

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 01 Oct 06:31

FrameBurst 1.0.3

The update messages now match the new FrameBurst look, rather than showing the old grey Windows message boxes.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.0.3.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, it will offer this update on its own
(or choose Check for updates from the tray menu). Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

What's new

Redesigned update dialogs

  • Check for updates now answers in a window styled like Settings, with the Mica background, the
FrameBurst title bar, a clear heading and Fluent buttons. It follows your light or dark theme.
  • This covers every update message: "You're up to date", "Couldn't check for updates", the
update-available prompt (with release notes) and "The update failed".
  • The update prompt now has clear buttons, Install now and Not now, in place of Yes / No.
  • Error details in these dialogs can be selected and copied.
  • Enter picks the highlighted button and Esc closes the dialog.

FrameBurst v1.0.2

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 01 Oct 00:10

FrameBurst 1.0.2

Screenshots can now be sorted into dated subfolders, so a busy screenshot folder stays organised by day,
month and year without any manual filing.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.0.2.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, it will offer this update on its own
(or choose Check for updates from the tray menu). Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

What's new

Dated subfolders

  • New Dated subfolders option on the Output page of Settings. Turn it on and each capture is saved
inside a subfolder of your screenshot folder named after the date it was taken.
  • The default layout is {yyyy}\{MM}\{dd}, e.g. Pictures\FrameBurst\2026\09\30\. A new folder is
created automatically when the day, month or year changes.
  • The layout is fully customisable with the same {…} .NET date format used for file names. Use \ to
    add folder levels, for example:
    • {yyyy}\{MM MMMM} → 2026\09 September\
    • {yyyy-MM} → 2026-09\ (one folder per month)
    • {yyyy}\Week {dd} → mix plain text and dates
  • The folder name and the file name use the same timestamp, so they always agree.

Notes

  • The option is off by default; existing setups keep saving exactly where they did before.
  • Open screenshot folder in the tray still opens the top-level screenshot folder.

FrameBurst v1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 30 Sep 23:56

FrameBurst 1.0.1

A look refresh: the Settings window and the tray menu are now built with WinUI 3, so FrameBurst looks and
feels like the rest of Windows 11. Capture, hotkeys and output work exactly as before.

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.0.1.exe:
run it and follow the steps. If you already have FrameBurst installed, it will offer this update on its own
(or choose Check for updates from the tray menu). Your settings are kept.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

What's new

New Settings window

  • Mica background, a Windows 11 style title bar, and a side menu with Capture, Output and Updates
    pages.
  • Every option is a card with an icon and a short description. On/off options use toggle switches.
  • The capture delay is a number box with arrow buttons that step by 250 ms.
  • Browse… opens the standard Windows folder picker.
  • The Updates page shows your version and has a Check for updates button, so you no longer need the
    tray menu to check.
  • If the settings can't be saved, the error appears inside the window and your changes stay on screen.
  • The window follows your light or dark theme.

New tray menu

  • Right-clicking the tray icon opens a WinUI menu with rounded corners, icons and your theme's colours.
  • Each capture item shows the hotkey assigned to it, such as Ctrl + PrintScreen.
  • Left-clicking the icon still captures a region.

Notes

  • The Windows App SDK is included in the installer, so nothing extra needs to be installed. The installer
    is larger because of it.
  • The screenshot overlay, annotation tools and colour picker have not changed.

FrameBurst v1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LunoviaVR LunoviaVR released this 30 Sep 23:21

FrameBurst v1.0.0

The first release of FrameBurst: a system tray screenshot tool for Windows that captures the highest-quality
image possible, with every step done on the GPU through Direct3D 11 (NVIDIA, AMD and Intel).

Download

FrameBurst-Setup-1.0.0.exe:
run it and follow the steps.

  • No admin rights needed. It installs for your user account by default, or for all users if you choose.
  • .NET is included, so nothing else needs to be installed.
  • Optional: start with Windows (on by default) and a desktop shortcut.
  • Uninstall any time from Settings › Apps › Installed apps.

Requirements: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 (64-bit), and a Direct3D 11 GPU.

Highlights

Pixel-exact, GPU-accelerated capture

  • Each monitor's frame is taken straight from the Windows compositor with Windows Graphics Capture as a
Direct3D 11 texture, with no GDI copies.
  • All monitors are captured at the same moment, each on the GPU that drives it, including hybrid laptops
    with integrated and dedicated graphics.
  • A D3D11 compute shader converts every frame to 8-bit sRGB exactly, whether Windows composites in 8-bit
or FP16 (Auto Color Management). All 16,777,216 colours are verified to come out unchanged.
  • About 45 ms from hotkey to pixels in memory for three monitors (9.9 MP). The shader itself runs in about
    0.5 ms.

Capture modes

Input Captures
PrintScreen A region (drag, or click a window)
Ctrl+PrintScreen All monitors
Shift+PrintScreen The monitor under the cursor
Alt+PrintScreen The active window
Click the tray icon A region, after a 1-second delay
  • Every hotkey can be changed in Settings.
  • Hotkeys work over full-screen games and apps. A low-level keyboard hook catches the key before the game
does, so the capture still starts, and the game doesn't receive the key press.

Region overlay

  • Freezes the screen across every monitor.
  • Drag to select, or click a window to take it.
  • Enter takes the monitor under the cursor, F takes the whole desktop.
  • Arrow keys move the cursor 1 px for precise edges.
  • A magnifier shows the surrounding pixels, the screen coordinates and the colour under the cursor.

Built-in editor

Draw on the frozen screen before choosing what to capture:

  • Pen, Highlighter, Arrow, Rectangle, Text and Blur, each with a one-key shortcut
    (P, H, A, R, T, B).
  • Colour palette, adjustable line width, text size and blur strength (mouse wheel or [ ]).
  • Undo and redo (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y).
  • Edits change only the pixels they cover; everything else stays pixel-perfect.

Screen colour picker

  • Freezes the screen with a magnifier and live hex/RGB readout.
  • Click to copy the exact colour as #RRGGBB.

Output

  • Lossless PNG from a custom multi-threaded encoder, with three compression levels (speed vs file size).
  • Saved to Pictures\FrameBurst with a customisable file name pattern using .NET date codes. A Read more.
link in Settings lists every code.
  • Copied to the clipboard as an image, a PNG and a file, so it pastes into chat apps, image editors and File
    Explorer.
  • A notification after each capture. Click it to show the file in File Explorer.
  • Optional capture delay and mouse cursor capture.

Automatic updates

  • FrameBurst checks this repository for new releases once a day and asks before installing anything.
  • Updates are verified against GitHub's SHA-256 checksum, then installed silently. FrameBurst restarts on its own.
  • Check any time from the tray menu (Check for updates…), or turn automatic checks off in Settings › Updates.

Known limitations

  • HDR isn't supported. On a monitor in Windows HDR mode, captures are clipped to SDR. Turn HDR off for that
    monitor before capturing it.
  • DRM-protected video shows up black. Windows enforces this.
  • On Windows 10 a yellow capture border may flash briefly around the screen. Windows 11 hides it.
  • The secure desktop (UAC prompts, the lock screen) cannot be captured.
  • Games running as administrator, or protected by some anti-cheat software, may block the hotkeys.
  • Inverting cursors (such as the I-beam) are approximated when cursor capture is on.
