imdb-ratings v0.7.2

Overlays the IMDb user rating on every title card while you browse Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and HBO Max. Each card gets a small badge with the rating. On Netflix, Prime Video and Hulu, hovering a title opens the site's own preview, which gets an IMDb line with the year and vote count; click that line to open the IMDb page. HBO Max has no preview, so there the badge on the card is the link. The featured banner at the top of each site, and a title's own page on Prime Video and HBO Max, get the same line beside the Play button or in the metadata row.

Install

  1. Download the ZIP below and extract it somewhere permanent; Chrome loads the extension from that folder every time it starts.
  2. In Chrome open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and pick the imdb-ratings folder.
  3. The settings panel opens. Click Update now to build the ratings database: about 240 MB downloaded from IMDb, a few minutes, with a progress bar.
  4. Open any of the four sites.

Updating from an earlier version: extract the new ZIP over the old folder and click the reload icon on the extension's card in chrome://extensions. Your database and settings are kept.

How it works

The extension builds its own ratings database in your browser from IMDb's public data dumps, which IMDb licenses for each person's own use, so no data ships with the extension. The result is about 365,000 movies and series with at least 25 votes, kept in the browser's storage. Lookups happen locally; nothing is sent anywhere while you browse.

Nothing downloads until you click Update now the first time. After that the database refreshes itself automatically once it is a week old (another 240 MB each time). The settings panel shows the title count and build date, and the weekly refresh can be switched off there, which is the thing to do on a metered connection.

Where a site shows a title's type (movie or show) and release year, as the preview popups and title pages do, the extension uses them to pick the right one among same-named titles, so a 2026 series doesn't get a 1955 film's rating.

Optionally, the panel can also use a free OMDb API key for titles the database doesn't have, such as releases newer than the database or titles with fewer than 25 votes. Tick the OMDb box on the panel to see where the key goes. An OMDb answer is only shown when its title is the one asked for; a near miss shows n/a, and the badge tooltip says what OMDb offered.

Permissions: the four streaming sites, datasets.imdbws.com (IMDb's dumps), and omdbapi.com for the optional key. No tracking.

imdb-ratings v0.6.2

Choose a tag to compare

Overlays the IMDb user rating on every title card while you browse Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and HBO Max. Each card gets a small badge with the rating. On Netflix, Prime Video and Hulu, hovering a title opens the site's own preview, which gets an IMDb line with the year and vote count; click that line to open the IMDb page. Install

  1. Download the ZIP below and extract it somewhere permanent; Chrome loads the extension from that folder every time it starts.
  2. In Chrome open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and pick the imdb-ratings folder.
  3. Give it a ratings source (either or both, see below). The settings panel opens on first install to help with this.
  4. Open any of the four sites.

Ratings sources

Local database. IMDb publishes its ratings as public data dumps, licensed for each person's own use, so the extension builds its database on your machine rather than shipping one. In the extension folder run:

node tools/build-local-db.mjs

(needs Node 18+). It downloads about 240 MB from IMDb and writes a 10 MB database of about 365,000 movies and series with at least 25 votes. Click the reload icon on the extension's card afterwards. Lookups then happen locally and nothing is sent anywhere while you browse. Run it again weekly or so to stay current; ratings move slowly.

OMDb API key. No Node needed. Get a free key at https://www.omdbapi.com/apikey.aspx (1,000 lookups a day), activate it from the email they send, and paste it into the settings panel. Titles are looked up as you browse. If you also have the local database, the key is only used for titles the database lacks, such as brand-new releases.

Every answer is kept, so a title is only looked up once. The settings panel shows the database's build date, today's OMDb request count, and a switch for the OMDb lookups.

Permissions: the four streaming sites, plus omdbapi.com for the optional key. No tracking.
