Follow the Skill path

A Skill can exist on disk through a symbolic link, yet an agent's discovery behavior may vary. check-agent now identifies symbolic links along the selected expected path when SKILL.md is found. It reports file presence, not whether an agent has loaded the Skill, and does not change the exit status or modify files.

Replace my-skill with the directory name; use --cwd to select a project. The output can include multiple link paths. The check does not launch Claude Code. The upstream discussion contains version-specific reports; it does not establish behavior across versions.

Find a shared project Skill

When a Skill exists in a project's .agents/skills/ directory but is missing from Claude Code's expected .claude/skills/ directory, check-agent now reports the shared location as a hint. The expected path remains missing, so the command still exits nonzero. Checks are read-only: they do not install, link, or load the Skill.

From a project directory, with Node.js 20 or newer:

node src/cli.js check-agent --agent claude-code --skill my-skill --scope project

Replace my-skill with the Skill directory name. To select a project explicitly, add --cwd /path/to/project. This checks file locations; it does not verify whether an agent has activated a Skill. The cross-agent directory question is discussed in Claude Code issue #31005.

This source preview also includes the existing ZIP review and folder comparison tools. The attached ZIP and SHA-256 file correspond to the source tree at this release; see the README for usage and limitations.

v0.14.2 · Clearer Skill ZIP guidance

If the only SKILL.md is loose at the root of a ZIP, the ZIP review page now shows a Claude-specific hint: Claude's web and desktop packaging instructions ask for a top-level Skill folder. The page links to the official guidance.

This is an informational hint, not a platform upload test. The checker reads ZIP directory metadata and does not validate YAML or file contents. Existing general findings and the Python check's exit codes are unchanged.

Download the ZIP, extract it, and run python3 -m http.server 8000 --bind 127.0.0.1 from the extracted folder (py -3 on Windows). Then open http://127.0.0.1:8000/web/zip.html. The selected ZIP stays in your browser. Use Ctrl+C to stop the server.

v0.14.1 · Clearer Skill path checks

A nested Skill document may refer to an asset relative to the Skill root. This patch checks that location as well as the document-relative location for unqualified inline-code paths, so an existing root-relative asset is no longer reported missing solely because it is not beside the document.

If both locations exist, the check asks for review. Markdown links and explicitly relative inline paths remain document-relative. File existence cannot establish which working directory the author intended; review the Skill's instructions in context. The check does not execute or install the Skill.

The source and public v0.1.0 Paper Collage bundle were used as a real comparison case. The asset-path false positive was removed; a separate inherited upstream reference remains missing. Native WorkBuddy import was not tested.

Check a Skill destination before installing

Two unrelated Skills can share a name. check-target reports whether the exact path you select currently exists, including an empty directory or a symbolic link:

PRESENT, MISSING, and UNAVAILABLE describe only what was observed during the check. The tool does not install, change, back up, reserve or run a Skill, and it cannot guarantee that a later copy is safe. Inspect existing files and back them up before replacing anything. See the README for paths, exit codes, and the linked same-name example.

v0.13.0 · Browser ZIP review

Review a single-Skill ZIP in your browser

Open the ZIP review, choose a file, or try the clearly labelled fictional example. The English/Chinese page reads bounded ZIP directory metadata in your browser and does not upload or extract the selected file.

It highlights exact-case SKILL.md counts, Unix-mode symlinks, duplicate and unsafe paths, case variants, and encrypted entries. Unsupported formats are reported as unavailable. A clean result does not validate file contents or YAML, prove uploader acceptance, or certify security. The README lists the browser's encoding and ZIP limits.

The Python ZIP check also rejects archives with ambiguous end records instead of relying on the last candidate.

Review a single-Skill ZIP before upload

With Python 3.9+, run:

python3 scripts/check_skill_zip.py /path/to/your-skill.zip

The read-only check reports exact-case SKILL.md entries and flags common archive-structure concerns, including Unix-mode symlinks and duplicate paths. It does not extract or execute files; --json produces a structured report.

We checked a historical Humanizer source ZIP associated with issue #224, which the project later fixed in PR #226. The old archive reported a symlink and two SKILL.md entries; its v2.11.1 release ZIP produced no findings. No archive was uploaded to Claude during this test.

This reviews directory metadata for a single-Skill upload. It does not validate YAML, compressed contents, uploader-specific rules, agent loading or security. A clean result is not an upload guarantee. See the README for size/format limits and exit codes.

Compare the whole plugin around a Skill

diff-tree compares two selected directory trees, including plugin metadata and hooks outside a nested SKILL.md.

This fictional example returns 1 for differences. In one isolated macOS test with skills@1.7.4, a nested Skill was copied while the selected enclosing plugin files were absent from the installed Skill directory. Compare the actual source and installation directories for your setup: moved files also appear as differences. The command does not establish plugin loading or execute hooks.

Review scripts mentioned in shell examples

review-shell finds selected ./scripts/ commands in shell-labeled fences in the source root SKILL.md and shows the path's status relative to the source and installed Skill roots.

The bundled fictional example reports a script present under the source root and missing under the installed root. These are non-blocking review hints: a command may use a different working directory. The check does not execute commands, parse all shell syntax, verify file integrity, read other Markdown files or prove that an agent loaded a Skill. The scan may miss candidates; output is capped at 1,000 hints with truncation reported.

Choose source and installed Skill folders, then see changed, source-only and installed-only paths. Try the clearly labeled fictional example first. Files are processed in the current browser tab; nothing is uploaded. English and Chinese are available, and the existing online Markdown table review remains available.

The page compares the files the browser provides: hidden files, empty folders and symbolic links may be omitted. It cannot determine whether two selections identify the same filesystem directory or prove that an agent loaded either copy. Each selected root needs SKILL.md; scans are bounded and incomplete reads show an error.

Local Chrome desktop/mobile-sized checks and GitHub Node 20/22 plus Chromium CI passed, including folder selection, sample/real transitions, cancellation, size limits, duplicate paths, failed reads, stale work, safe text and bilingual navigation.
