Kawaro 0.4.0-beta.1

Status

This is the first public beta of Kawaro, for Linux and for Windows. It is a prerelease: expect rough edges, and please report what you find. Nothing in it is production ready, and the stable channel does not offer it.

What works

• Select files in your file manager, open the hexagonal hive from the right click menu and pick an action. The result is saved next to the original, which is never modified. Arabic and English, with full right to left layout.
• Linux (Wayland first, Fedora and Ubuntu families): RPM and DEB packages, the drop hive and the global shortcut through the system portal.
• Windows 10 and 11, 64 bit: a portable zip and a per-user MSI that needs no administrator rights, with the right click menu entry and the tray icon.
• Updates from inside the app on both systems, described below.

Known gaps

• Windows: the zip and the MSI are unsigned, because there is no code signing certificate yet. Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC". Click "More info", then "Run anyway", after you have checked your download against SHA256SUMS.
• Nothing on Windows has been verified on a live Windows machine yet: the builds are cross compiled on Linux and tested there, and the live checklist (S-052) is the next step.
• Windows: the drop hive (drag files from Explorer onto a cell, S-047) and the notification when a job ends with an Open folder button (S-049) are built and unit tested but have not run on a live Windows machine yet. Until the app id is registered, the notification may be labelled with another app's name.
• Linux: the focus and activation tests on real GNOME and KDE desktops are still pending. On those desktops the hive may open without keyboard focus.
• The tray menu has not been checked on real desktops yet, and the in-app download percentage in the tray tooltip has not been tested live.
• The Windows update helper, which installs a new MSI while the app is closed, is built and unit tested but has not run on a live Windows machine yet.

Updates

Kawaro checks once a day for a new version. The check reads a signed manifest from the project's GitHub releases; the signature is verified against a public key built into the app before anything is downloaded, and every package is checked against the size and SHA-256 in that manifest. There are two channels, beta and stable. A beta build follows the beta channel, so you will be offered later betas and the final release. To turn the automatic check off, set update_check = false in config.toml. A manual check ignores that setting: run kawaro update --check to check, kawaro update to download and verify, and kawaro update --apply to install (S-054c). There is no menu entry for it yet.

On Windows an update installs quietly for your user. On Linux the package is downloaded and verified in the background, and it installs only after you choose "Update now" in the tray menu and approve the system password prompt.

Privacy

No telemetry, no accounts and no processing servers. Your files never leave your machine. The only network traffic is the update check and the download of an update, which GitHub sees like any other download (your address and a fixed user agent).

Verify your download

Every release lists the file SHA256SUMS. Download it next to the packages and run sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing in that folder; every file you downloaded must say OK. On Windows, certutil -hashfile <file> SHA256 prints the value to compare with the line in SHA256SUMS.

0.3.3: اختصار البوابة

Portal shortcut: on GNOME 48 and later and KDE 6, SbarHive registers Super+Z by itself through the system portal. You approve it once, then hold Super+Z while dragging a file to open the drop hive. If you bound Super+Z by hand before, remove that bind. On Hyprland the exec bind stays the main way. See the drop shortcut guide.

Fix: on KDE with focus stealing prevention set to Extreme, the hive no longer takes the keyboard without a valid activation token.

إصلاح: على KDE حين يكون منع سرقة التركيز على أقصى درجة، لم تعد الخلية تأخذ لوحة المفاتيح دون رمز تفعيل صالح.

0.3.2: حركة الظهور

The hive's opening animation now plays on Hyprland and KDE. Before, it jumped straight to its final frame. The drop hive plays it when a drag reveals it. Releasing the key over an open drop hive no longer breaks the next drag.

0.3.1: الإفلات بسحب حقيقي

The drop hive now appears only while you drag files that have an action. Holding Alt or Super+Z with no drag, or dragging a file no action takes, shows nothing. On Hyprland the hive appears with the drag's first motion after the key is held. GNOME is unchanged.

SbarHive 0.3.0 «الإفلات»

• Drop shortcut docs and budget (S-014d): docs/drop-shortcut.md explains, in Arabic and English, how to bind sbarhive drop to Super+Z (the default) in GNOME Settings, KDE System Settings and Hyprland, the Hyprland README adds the held left Alt binds (sbarhive drop --hold and --release), and a drop-mode show is measured on headless KWin at a median 51.3 ms to the first frame, taking no keyboard. «توثيق ربط اختصار الإفلات Super+Z في GNOME وKDE وHyprland».
• Hold a key to drop, and the dragged file in the drop hive (S-019e, S-019f): sbarhive drop --hold is the press of a held key and sbarhive drop --release its release, both returning at once; the daemon's long press gate shows the drop hive only once the key has been held for hold_ms (config.toml, 100 to 2000, default 400, read at every press), so a tap shows nothing, the release closes the hive without running anything, the drag leaving it does not close it while the key is held, and any close resets the gate; after a drag enters, the drop hive's centre shows the dragged file's thumbnail or kind icon, or the count of several. «تظهر خلية الإفلات بعد ضغط مطوّل على المفتاح وتختفي عند تركه، وفي مركزها صورة الملف المسحوب».
• Hive at the pointer on the overlay (S-019c, S-019d): on Hyprland, KDE and wlroots the hive now opens where the pointer or the dragged file is, its shape adapting near the screen edges, waiting at most 50 ms for the compositor to report the pointer and centring without it (Hyprland reports a still pointer only after it moves); a drop hive shown before the drag moves jumps once to the drag if it moves within 300 ms of the first frame, and otherwise stays centred with only the hive taking input, so a still pointer is never held, and sbarhive drop --at X,Y (for example $(hyprctl cursorpos)) places it there at once on the output holding that point; the window path (GNOME, a running screen reader) stays centred. «تظهر الخلية عند المؤشر أو الملف المسحوب ويتكيّف شكلها قرب حواف الشاشة».
• Screen reader rule and hive at an anchor maths (S-019a, S-019b): the hive becomes a window for a screen reader only when ScreenReaderEnabled is set and a reader owns org.gnome.Orca.Service, hive_surface = "auto|layer|window" in config.toml overrides the rule, every change of the choice prints one hive surface choice: KIND, REASON line, and plan_at computes a hive centred at an anchor whose shape adapts to the screen edges (not shown at the pointer yet). «الخلية نافذة لقارئ الشاشة فقط حين يعمل قارئ فعلاً، لا لبقية علم من إعداد GNOME».
• Drop on the hive overlay on Hyprland (S-020): in drop mode the overlay's full-output surface now takes the drag over the hive rectangle only (the hive subsurface takes none), so cells light up under a dragged file and a drop runs the action on Hyprland too; outside the hive drags and clicks still pass through. «على Hyprland تضيء الخلية تحت الملف المسحوب ويُنفَّذ إجراؤها عند الإفلات».
• Drop hive waiting text (S-014c): the hive shown by sbarhive drop now reads "Drop files here" («أفلت الملف هنا») in its centre until a drag enters, and with SBARHIVE_DEBUG_FOCUS the service prints one drop cells: ID ... line per enter with the cells built for the dragged files.
• File preview in the centre cell (S-018h): with no cell hovered the centre shows the selected file's cached thumbnail, decoded row by row and downscaled to the square inscribed in the centre hexagon before Slint and freed on every hide, else the kind icon with the format code; several files add two stacked hexagons and a count badge, mirrored in Arabic; the centre is read as the file name or the selection text, and the layout is unchanged.
• Overlay buffers, docs and suite (S-018f): hiding the overlay now frees every buffer of that show at once, the catcher's pixel included, instead of waiting for the compositor to release them; docs/architecture.md describes the layer and window paths and their choice rule, the Hyprland README gives an unverified layer rule that turns off the overlay animation, and tests/overlay/run.sh runs the whole overlay suite.
• Overlay colour scheme and cursor (S-018e): SBARHIVE_COLOR_SCHEME given to the service now decides the overlay colours ahead of the portal when theme = "auto", and the overlay asks for the default arrow cursor (wp_cursor_shape_v1) on every pointer enter.
• Drop on the hive overlay (S-018d): sbarhive drop on the layer-shell overlay takes dragged files again, its drop receiver now bound on the overlay's connection to the hive surface, with clicks and drags outside the hive passing through.
• Hive overlay input and focus (S-018c): the activation token is sent once the overlay is mapped, SBARHIVE_DEBUG_FOCUS prints one hive surface: layer|window X Y W H line per show, and while a screen reader runs (org.a11y.Status.ScreenReaderEnabled) the next show is a window, back to the overlay when it stops.
• Hive overlay (S-018b): on compositors that offer wlr-layer-shell (checked on headless KWin) every hive show is a full-output overlay with the hive centred in it, no window frame or tiling, closed with Esc; GNOME and SBARHIVE_SURFACE=window keep the window, SBARHIVE_SURFACE=layer|window forces the choice.
• Centre picture lookups (S-018g): sbarhive_ui::thumb finds a valid cached freedesktop thumbnail for a file (GLib and Qt URIs, symlink targets, read only), its MIME type from shared-mime-info globs2, its kind icon (new monoline file icon) and format code.
• Overlay groundwork (S-018a): pure surface choice between a layer-shell overlay and a window, hive placement and buffer size per scale, evdev keys, colour scheme and cursor shape decisions in sbarhive_ui::overlay.
• Drop receiver (S-014b): on Wayland the hive shown by sbarhive drop takes a file dragged onto it, reads the files when the drag enters, builds their cells and runs the action of the cell it is dropped on, as a copy only; a drop elsewhere closes it and runs nothing.
• Drop groundwork (S-014a): sbarhive drop [--token T] asks the service for a hive that waits for dragged files, with a shared text/uri-list parser, drop point cell picking and the drop hive state machine.
• Fixed: scripts/install.sh stops a running daemon before replacing it, so an upgrade never leaves the old one running (the new one used to exit with "already running").

Known limits

• Hyprland lines in the docs follow Hyprland 0.56 and are checked in a private nested Hyprland; daily use on a real Hyprland session is still being tried.
• GNOME: the hive is a centred window; focus has not yet been tried on a real GNOME session (#1).
• The portal shortcut, signed COPR and APT repositories and the glass look are planned for 0.4.0.

Install

RPM and DEB packages are attached below once the packaging workflow finishes.

Reopen your file manager afterwards; SbarHive appears in the right-click menu of Dolphin, Nautilus (needs nautilus-python or python3-nautilus) and Nemo.

Tested by installing in clean Fedora 41, current Fedora, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12.

0.2.0 «المحركات»

• Focus tests (S-013): tests/focus/ measures hive focus in private headless GNOME and KWin with no, real and made-up activation tokens under default and strict focus policies.
• Settings window (S-011): language, theme, output place and folder, quality, notifications, built from the vendored Slint Material 3 components with token colours and no shadows, Arabic and English with full mirroring; opened from the tray menu.
• Office and PDF engines (S-009, S-010): documents to PDF, DOCX, ODT, XLSX, ODS, PPTX, ODP through LibreOffice; PDF merge, rotate, split (ZIP) in pure Rust; compress and pages to PNG (ZIP) through Ghostscript.
• FFmpeg engine (S-008): video to MP4, WebM, MKV, MOV and GIF, audio extraction and conversion, video compression with real progress.
• sbarhive doctor and sbarhive reload; the service also reloads settings and user actions by itself when their files change.
• Brand: hexagon and cactus app icon, tray icon, wordmark, PNG exports; bilingual landing page in site/.

Fixed

• The xdg-activation token now reaches the compositor (a token builds a fresh hive window, since Slint applies it only when a window adapter is created), so the hive gets focus under GNOME strict and KWin Extreme.
• The hive's corners are transparent on Wayland with the software renderer (vendored softbuffer 0.4.8 with Argb8888 buffers).
• Only the hive window's own focus events can close the hive.
• No empty toplevel window at daemon start: the settings window is created on first open.

Known limits

• Not yet tested in a real GNOME or KDE session with real Nautilus or Dolphin activation tokens (tested in headless GNOME Shell and KWin, and live on Hyprland).
• First frame on a cold start is about 210 ms on live Hyprland; the 150 ms target holds when the service is already running.
• Idle memory of the service is about 30 to 38 MB with a normal font set, but grows with very large font collections (56 MB measured with about 13,600 user fonts).

Install: git clone, then ./scripts/install.sh. Linux only for now.

• Hive (S-001): 19 hexagonal cells with icons and format codes, one compact ring for six or fewer actions, Arabic mirroring, keyboard and screen reader access, reduced motion, colours and sizes generated from design/tokens.json.
