Healthlog is awesom - but I'm missing essential features #980

Hi @bvn9sttwkt-max, thank you so much for this post and for the kind words. I am really sorry you have been dealing with migraines for so many years, and it means a lot to me that HealthLog helps you keep all your findings in one place. You are raising a fair point. Let me show you what is already there and where the gap really is. What you can do today The illness module (the Diseases area you found) goes a bit further than a pain slider. You can open an episode with the lifecycle "chronic ongoing" or "recurring" and log individual attacks as flares under that condition. Each day log has a functional-impact scale, symptoms with a severity from 1 to 3 (headache is one of them) and an encrypted note: That symptom severity is also a daily signal in pattern discovery, so HealthLog looks for relationships between how you feel and things like sleep, mood, medication adherence or, if you turn on the environment module, the weather. For each episode there is also a look back at how your vitals behaved before and during it. For symptoms that are specific to migraine, such as aura, nausea or sensitivity to light, you can add your own tags in the mood check-in, so they are at least recorded day by day. Where you are right The symptom list in the illness module cannot be customized yet. The catalog is fixed and leans towards colds and infections, which does not fit a chronic condition like yours well. Lab results are also not correlated with symptoms: labs are usually taken weeks or months apart, so they do not fit the day-by-day pattern discovery. A customizable symptom list for chronic conditions is a really good idea, and your post is valuable input for it. The iOS app login I would love to help you get the app connected. Could you share two things?
Two settings are worth checking in the meantime, since you are behind Cloudflare:
The app setup itself is described here: https://docs.healthlog.dev/getting-started/connect-ios-app/ Thanks again for taking the time to write all of this down, and for telling me about your experience with Bearable too. |

A quick follow-up: I've opened #981 for custom symptoms in the illness module, so you can follow it there. If anything is missing from the description, especially for tracking migraine, feel free to add it on the issue. |

Hey!
Thank you once again for creating such an absolutely amazing app. The longer I use it and dig into it as a user, the more I realize just how extensive it is and how many little details you've thought of. I can only express my deepest admiration and respect for what you've built. Really great stuff!
Honestly, I think my mistake was simply approaching HealthLog with the mindset that I was looking for an alternative to Bearable, so I was very focused on symptom tracking. In that context, thank you very much for the detailed explanations you put together for me. I'll definitely take another closer look at everything.
That said, I wouldn't have thought of entering migraine symptoms such as aura, headaches, muscle tension, etc. under Moods. Yes, mood is also a very interesting area to track, and I might start tracking that systematically in the future as well. But subjectively, I would have categorized those symptoms differently.
My first instinct was: I go to “Log” and immediately get the option to enter my symptoms. That would be important to me in everyday use: being able to quickly record a symptom directly, without having to take a detour through other categories.
Regarding the connection with lab results: yes, I think that was another misconception on my part. I do have a few lab values that are outside the normal range, and I'm hoping to get those under control over the next few weeks with the help of a nutritionist. Once I manage to do that, I'll obviously be very interested to see whether and how it affects my migraines.
As I mentioned, I've been trying for a long time to identify connections and factors that genuinely have an impact on the frequency and intensity of my migraines. I think a lot of people out there are in a similar situation. Your app gives me another new option for investigating these things systematically.
Regarding the app itself: that was simply a mistake on my part. During setup, I entered my Cloudflare address, but then later entered the local IP address through the web interface. My mistake. Everything is working perfectly now.
Thanks again!
I'll definitely keep using it, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how HealthLog continues to evolve.
Best regards,
Johannes

Uh oh!

I’ve been dealing with chronic migraines for many years. Over that time, I’ve consulted all kinds of specialists: neurologists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, etc.
To keep track of all my medical findings and documents, I recently tried HealthLog (mbombeck), and I’m actually very impressed with it. It helps me keep track of my lab results over multiple points in time and relate them to other information.
What I don’t understand, though, is why there doesn’t seem to be a proper section for recording current complaints and symptoms. Isn’t that basically a must-have for software like this? What’s the point of having all these biomarkers if I can’t systematically correlate them with the symptoms I’m experiencing? Has anyone found a solution for this? There is a very basic pain-tracking section under the Diseases area, but there’s no proper symptom list that can be customized and expanded.
I was hoping that perhaps the iOS smartphone app would offer better options for tracking symptoms, but unfortunately I’m currently unable to connect the HealthLog app (TestFlight) to my server. I’ve also set up a Cloudflare connection, which works perfectly for HTTPS access, but the login consistently fails. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
So far, I’ve been using Bearable to log symptoms, but I’m not particularly happy with its interface. It would be awesome, to log my symptoms in healthlog.
