Release list
v 1.0.0
Good Tables 1.0.0
The first stable release — make your Obsidian tables easier to read.
✨ Native tables, more ways to express your data
- Format values as percentages, calculated shares, horizontal bars, dates, times, ratings, or custom prefixes and suffixes.
- Find table formats inside Obsidian's native Format menu, with checked states and one-action replacement or removal.
- Combine value formats with bold, italic, strikethrough, and highlight. Code, comments, and math remain exclusive, with undo/redo support.
- Use Obsidian’s native Clear formatting to remove value formats and individual cell colors together. Merges, diagonal cells, title assignments, and dimensions stay in place; undo/redo restores the cleared presentation.
🎨 Color and structure
- Set title rows and columns, individual backgrounds and text colors, and six shared favorite colors.
- Keep explicit text colors ahead of theme emphasis colors. Choose global or individual bar colors with consistent 25% opacity.
- Merge rectangular ranges while retaining all original values, then unmerge to reveal them. Merged cells wrap their content and automatically grow or shrink as you edit or resize columns.
- Type directly into both halves of a diagonal first cell, with multiline and IME support.
🛠️ Everyday editing
Use native row/column handles, original-value editing, and document undo/redo. Row and column moves carry styles with them. Calculation groups share totals within each table update for efficient large-table display.
📦 Installation
Desktop only · Obsidian 1.14.4 or later
Install Good Tables from Settings → Community plugins → Browse, or download main.js, manifest.json, and styles.css from this release and copy them into your vault's .obsidian/plugins/good-tables/ folder. Reload Obsidian and enable the plugin.
The optional good-tables-1.0.0.zip contains the same three files inside a good-tables/ folder.
✅ Validation
79 automated tests and 102 live-app QA scenarios passed on Obsidian 1.14.5, including the Things theme, a full disable/enable cycle, 8 focused merged-height checks, and 13 native Clear formatting checks.
v 0.2.4- beta version
Good Tables 0.2.4
Native formatting, richer tables, and cleaner menus.
✨ One Format menu
Good Tables formats now live inside Obsidian's native Format submenu, between Code / Math / Comment and Clear formatting.
- See every format available for the selection, even when a format is already applied.
- Identify the current format by its checkmark.
- Select another format to replace the current one, or select the same format again to remove it.
- Change mixed or partially formatted ranges in one action.
- Keep saved formats in your preferred order, with the general Custom entry last among Good Tables formats.
🖍️ Native text styles, together
Combine table formats with bold, italic, strikethrough, and highlight, including all six native highlight colors. Original Markdown remains editable.
Applying Code, Comment, or Math removes the Good Tables value format from the affected cells. Native undo and redo restore both states. Good Tables value formats stay unavailable while one of these exclusive styles is present.
🎨 Your colors take priority
- Set individual background and text colors on title cells while preserving their ordinary cell colors.
- Keep your chosen text color when a theme assigns its own bold, italic, or highlight colors. This also works during native cell editing, in reading view, and in merged content.
- Clear the custom text color to restore the theme's normal styling. Uncolored cells retain their original appearance.
- Choose a default Bar color in settings or override it from the cell menu. Every bar color keeps the same 25% opacity.
⭐ Ratings that fit
Rating columns grow to fit the rendered stars, including bold, italic, and highlight styling. Their width is retained while editing, keeping stars inside the cell border.
✂️ Cleaner context menus
Copy original values and Edit original values are hidden when the selection has no Good Tables formats, colors, titles, merges, or diagonal cells. Native copy and editing commands remain available.
⚡ Faster large-table calculations
Calculated percentages and bars now share group totals within each table update, avoiding repeated calculations as tables grow. Totals refresh after edits, title changes, merges, and settings changes.

✅ Validation
70 automated tests and 81 live-app QA scenarios passed on Obsidian 1.14.5, including the Things theme and a complete disable/enable cycle. A clean dependency installation produced identical release files. Dependency audit reported zero known vulnerabilities.

v 0.2.1 - beta version
Good Tables 0.2.1
Clearer colors and menus that fit your selection.
🎨 Color improvements
-
Place HEX beside RGB in one compact row to reduce dialog height.
-
Keep cell background and text colors visible when entering the native cell editor.
-
Compare the current color with the selected color in the picker. HEX and RGB edits update the preview immediately.
-
Clearly identify selections containing multiple colors.
-
Outline the favorite color currently being edited.
-
Preview title background and text colors directly in settings, including theme defaults.
✨ Simpler menus
- Show only actions that can run on the selected cells. Single cells no longer show Merge; Diagonal first cell appears only on the first corner cell.
- Hide incompatible merge/title/format actions and unsupported paste into merged cells.
- Remove the extra Good Tables row/column and cell-size commands and resize handles. Obsidian's native table tools remain available, and existing stored dimensions remain compatible.
- Keep the general Custom format entry at the bottom, below built-in and saved formats, including in the order settings.
📦 Installation
Desktop only · Obsidian 1.14.4 or later

v 0.2.0 - beta version
Good Tables 0.2.0
Smoother tables, direct diagonal editing, and a new color picker.
✨ What's new
- Pick colors visually: a saturation/brightness area and rainbow hue strip appear directly in the color dialog, with synchronized HEX and RGB inputs.
- Edit diagonal cells in place: click either triangle to type, add line breaks, and use undo/redo without opening an editing dialog.
- Keep favorite formats close: saved custom formats have their own entries in the Format menu. Move each one independently in Format menu order.
🛠 Fixes and refinements
- Keep table dimensions and formatting visible through native row/column moves and routine refreshes.
- Show Good Tables below the native context-menu entries when right-clicking a single focused cell.
- Preserve diagonal input focus and caret position when Obsidian updates the underlying table, including IME composition.
- Limit New table defaults to rows, columns, and the diagonal switch. Other table options now live under Table settings.
- Add editable HEX fields for both title background and title text colors, alongside the visual picker.
📦 Installation
Desktop only · Obsidian 1.14.4 or later

main.jsmanifest.jsonstyles.css

✅ Validation
52 automated tests and 48 live-app QA scenarios passed on Obsidian 1.14.5, including frame sampling for table layout stability and actual mouse/keyboard checks.
Good Tables runs locally. Clipboard access occurs only through user-invoked copy/paste actions; it does not read the clipboard in the background.
v 0.1.4 - beta version
Good Tables · 0.1.4
Review fixes, searchable settings, and better popout compatibility.
Desktop only · Obsidian 1.14.4+ · MIT License
🛠️ Improvements
- Address automated review errors around direct style assignments and settings headings.
- Make Good Tables settings available in Obsidian's settings search through declarative definitions.
- Use the owning window's timers and document helpers for native menus, hover submenus, and table decoration.
- Improve validation of loaded settings and decoded table metadata.
- Replace CSS
!importantrules with scoped selectors. - Add official Obsidian ESLint checks, regression tests, and a manually triggered build provenance workflow.
Existing table data and saved settings remain compatible. Obsidian's native table editing, selection, menus, and undo/redo are preserved.
