CabinetOS turns a small PC under your TV into a games console for your own RomM library: it starts straight into its own menus, plays 33 systems with emulators chosen and set up for each, and keeps every game, cover, BIOS and save on your server. A controller does everything after the first run, and it updates itself.

Download

cabinetos.iso, 6.66 GB, no account needed.

Write it to a USB stick of 8 GB or more with balenaEtcher or Rufus, then follow Install in the wiki.

Install once

After that the console updates itself: Settings, System, System update, or a weekly check if you turn it on. Each update is the whole system at once, checked against CabinetOS's signature before it is applied, and the version before it stays on the console. Away from home it still plays every game you downloaded and the ones you played recently; saves go up to your server when you are back.

Before you start

  • It erases the whole drive it installs to. No dual boot.
  • You need a RomM server on your network. Games, BIOS and saves come from it; none are included.
  • Tested on one machine, the GEEKOM A9 Max (AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, Radeon 890M). Other AMD machines may well work; please report how it goes.
  • The installer needs no network. Switch and Xbox emulators download on the first boot with internet, so their games are greyed for a few minutes.

Known issues

  • Starting the console while no display answers (a TV with no power, a receiver or HDMI switch off) leaves it at 1080p until a restart. A TV in standby is fine. Restart with the display on. (#268)

Licences and source code

CabinetOS is free, is not sold, and takes no donations. Six of its emulators are free for non-commercial use only, which is why. Every component, its licence and the exact version shipped are in LICENCES.md; the full licence texts are on the console in /usr/share/licenses/cabinetos/.

Source: this repository at this release's tag, which builds the image, and the upstream projects at the exact versions LICENCES.md names, with every change we make applied by the build scripts here.
