Do I need a BC-250, or does SkillFishOS run on a normal PC?

The board is what the project is for, but it is not a requirement.

There are two editions. BC-250 carries a kernel built for that board — znver2, the
40-Compute-Unit unlock, the SMU governor, the eight-core unlock. Generic x86-64 is the
same system with a plain kernel, and runs on ordinary PCs and in virtual machines.

What is worth knowing before you try: the parts that make this project interesting on a
BC-250 — live CU control, the overclock and undervolt profiles, the silicon wizards — have
nothing to work on elsewhere. On a normal PC the Tuner detects that and hides them, and the
on-screen HUD does the same. What you are left with is a Debian sid + KDE Plasma system with
a steampunk theme, Btrfs snapshots wired into apt, Steam and emulators set up, and the
local AI. That is a reasonable thing to run, but it is not the reason this exists.

Short version: Generic for a PC or a VM, BC-250 for the board. Both from
skillfishos.com/download.

The BC-250-only features disappear on hardware that does not have them, rather than
failing: skillfish-is-bc250 gates them and the apps check it at start-up. If you find one
that appears anyway and then errors, that is a bug — please open an issue with the
hardware-only label in mind.
