@MacsInSpace MacsInSpace released this 22 Oct 09:00

Test release. Install it like v1.1.0: copy everything in the zip to the card. Your edited ClusterMap/gal_dualscreen.conf can be kept; new keys are optional.

New in beta2

  • Turn arrows and music on SEAT fixed. The arrows jar in v1.1.0 and beta1 was built for VW firmware and lost music and arrows on SEAT. The bundled jar is now VCAndroidAuto 0.1.5-beta2: one file for VW and SEAT. Not yet car-tested on SEAT.

Since v1.1.0

  • SEAT P4709 is built in (car-tested by DaniFR3), like P4708. The GAL_PROFILE_TRIAL= line is no longer needed.
  • Turn arrows: maintained fork. The arrows jar now comes from MacsInSpace/mib2-android-auto-vc, since adi961 no longer maintains it. The arrows should come back after the car sleeps, and the jar writes /tmp/VCAndroidAuto.log, which Save logs to SD collects. The sleep fix was tested on a VW Golf P4521; the SEAT sleep case still needs a test.
  • CLUSTERMAP_KEEP_ARROWS=1 in gal_dualscreen.conf keeps the arrows jar with the map, adding it if missing. On SEAT this gives map, arrows and music together. Not for VW: the map goes blank when a route starts. Uninstall removes a jar added this way.
  • Updating the arrows jar: installing replaces an older VCAndroidAuto.jar already on the unit. The old copy is kept as VCAndroidAuto.jar.before_update.
  • Autorun tested: renaming _Swdlautorun.txt to Swdlautorun.txt started the update straight away on a VW Golf. It's still untested on Audi.
  • Docs: the settings DPI 140 with insets 105,127,127,127 that SEAT owners settled on.

Tested firmware so far: VW P4521 (Golf, Tiguan), K4525, SEAT P4708, P4709; Golf R P4512 with a trial line.

Superseded by v1.1.1-beta2. On SEAT, the arrows jar in this beta loses music and arrows; beta2 fixes it.

v1.1.0: more cars, software-update install fixed, CarPlay map (experimental)

Choose a tag to compare

@MacsInSpace MacsInSpace released this 19 Oct 07:08

Android Auto map on more cars, a working software-update install, and the first CarPlay map on a dash.

What's new since v1.0.0

  • Software update install works. In v1.0.0 it did nothing on cars because of a path bug. It has now run on three cars. At the end the unit shows "Version back documentation". This is normal: press Cancel.
  • The map fills your cluster's window. The installer reads the real window size from the unit instead of assuming 800×480, and the phone leaves margins so the map fills it without stretching. This fixes the stripes on SEAT.
  • SEAT MHI2_ER_SEG11_P4708 is supported (thanks @lito69). Its 1010×376 window works.
  • Turn arrows on SEAT P4708 and P4709.
  • Untested firmware with a trial line. If ClusterMap/gal_dualscreen.conf has a GAL_PROFILE_TRIAL= line for your firmware, the installer installs it. You don't need SSH. A Golf R on P4512 installs this way.
  • Day/night and insets without the hex. GAL_SECONDARY_UI_CONFIG_HEX is now an expert override, so GAL_SECONDARY_INSETS (each 0 to 127) and the theme take effect.
  • Save logs keeps every run in ClusterMap/run_logs/1, 2, ... and works from SD slot 2.
  • CarPlay map (experimental). Built from harman-f's mhi2_altscreen_carplay hook (GPL-3.0). It installs only on the exact CarPlay library it was made for. It adds one firewall rule so the iPhone's cluster video can reach the unit, and a safe area from your insets. It has shown on a Golf R dash. Fitting it between the dials is still being tested. Once after installing, use Forget This Car on the iPhone. See CarPlay.
  • Optional autorun. _Swdlautorun.txt at the top of the card is off. Rename it to Swdlautorun.txt and units that honour it start the update without the service menu. This is untested; it's meant for Audis, where that menu needs developer mode.
  • The folder on the card is now ClusterMap (it was AAClusterMap). If you still have an AAClusterMap folder, delete it.

Install

Download mib-cluster-map_v1.1.0.zip below. Don't use "Source code": it has no built programs. Copy everything inside it to a FAT32 SD card, so ClusterMap, Custom, metainfo2.txt and _Swdlautorun.txt are at the top level. Put the card in SD slot 1 and unplug the phone. Then:

  • VW, SEAT, Skoda: hold MENU > Software updates/versions > Update > SD card > MIB Cluster Map.
  • Audi: with developer mode on (5F), hold BACK + upper-left.

Press Cancel at the end, then hold power for 10 seconds to reboot. The update writes what it did to ClusterMap/update_result.txt. Full guide: Install.

On unsupported firmware it installs nothing and collects the files needed to add your unit. Open an issue with the info.txt from the porting_... folder.

Known limits

  • Hardware video decoding (GAL_PLAYER_DECODER=hw) fails on the cars tried so far and falls back to software. The default is software.
  • The map and the turn arrows can't run together. Steering-wheel zoom isn't possible.
  • The Android Auto map shows whenever Android Auto is connected, even while the car's own navigation has a route (issue #4).

Thanks to @lito69, @tulio150 and @DaniFR3 for car tests and porting files.

v1.1.0-beta1: map sized to your cluster, software update fixed, CarPlay (experimental)

Choose a tag to compare

@MacsInSpace MacsInSpace released this 19 Oct 00:54

Beta for testing on more cars. Use v1.0.0 if you want the release tested on one Golf.

What's new

  • The map fills your cluster's window. The installer reads the real window size from the unit (dmdt gd) instead of assuming 800×480. It asks the phone for margins so the map is cropped and fills the window, with no letterbox and no stretching. This should fix the stripes and wrong resolution seen on SEAT (#4).
  • Software update install fixed. It did nothing on cars before. It now writes ClusterMap/update_result.txt and ClusterMap/final_trace.txt on the card. At the end the unit shows "Version back documentation". This is normal: press Cancel.
  • Untested firmware with a trial line. If ClusterMap/gal_dualscreen.conf has a GAL_PROFILE_TRIAL= line for your firmware, the installer installs it. You no longer need SSH or a hand-edited install.sh.
  • Day/night and insets work without the hex. GAL_SECONDARY_UI_CONFIG_HEX is commented out, so GAL_SECONDARY_INSETS (each 0 to 127) and the theme take effect.
  • Save logs keeps every run in ClusterMap/run_logs/1, 2, ... and works from SD slot 2.
  • CarPlay map (experimental, untested with an iPhone). It uses harman-f's mhi2_altscreen_carplay hook, built from source (GPL-3.0). It installs only on the CarPlay library build it was made for and is skipped otherwise.
  • The folder on the card is now ClusterMap (it was AAClusterMap). If you have an old AAClusterMap folder, delete it.

Install

Download MIBClusterMap_v1.1.0-beta1.zip below (not "Source code"). Copy everything inside it to a FAT32 SD card, so ClusterMap, Custom and metainfo2.txt are at the top level. Put it in SD slot 1. Then do one of these:

  • Software update: hold MENU > Software updates/versions > Update > SD card > MIB Cluster Map. Press Cancel on the screen at the end, then reboot (hold power for 10 seconds).
  • Green menu: if you already have it, go to Testmode > Green Developer Menu > ClusterMap > Install.

Disconnect the phone (Android Auto off) while installing.

Reports wanted

After a drive with navigation running, go to green menu > ClusterMap > Save logs to SD. Attach ClusterMap/run_logs/N/dmdt_gd.txt, gal_dualscreen.log and stream-player.log to an issue, plus update_result.txt if you used the software update. Remove the location data from any photos before you post them.

v1.0.0: Android Auto map on the VW digital cluster (MIB2.5 High)

Choose a tag to compare

@MacsInSpace MacsInSpace released this 13 Oct 10:00
fd1717c

First release. Shows the Android Auto map (Google Maps or Waze) on the VW digital cluster.

Supported: Harman MIB2.5 "Discover Pro" 9.2 inch, firmware MHI2_ER_VWG13_P4521 (shown as Software: 1367), with a digital cluster and Android Auto over USB. "Software: 1367" alone is not proof, because a second firmware shares that number. You do not have to work it out: the installer checks the real firmware and changes nothing if it is not supported. See Supported units.

Needs: nothing else. The MQB Coding MIB2 Toolbox is optional but recommended, with its SSH service, as a way back in if anything goes wrong.

Install

Download AAClusterMap_MHI2_v1.0.0.zip below. Do not use "Source code": it has no built programs. Then follow the Quick start. In short:

  1. Format an SD card as FAT32 and copy everything inside the zip to it, so AAClusterMap, Custom and metainfo2.txt are at the top level. Put it in SD slot 1, with the other slot empty.
  2. Engine running or a charger connected. Hold MENU for the service screen, then Software updates/versions > Update > the SD card > Android Auto Cluster Map.
  3. Hold the power button for ten seconds to reboot. Plug in the phone and switch the cluster to its map view.

The update checks the firmware, adds the NavActiveIgnore patch if it is missing, switches off the turn-by-turn arrows jar if it is loaded, and installs the cluster map. It also puts an AAClusterMap screen in the green engineering menu (hold MENU > Testmode > Green Developer Menu) with status, uninstall, logs and a switch to turn arrows. What it did is written to AAClusterMap/update_result.txt on the card.

If your firmware is not supported

Run the update anyway. It installs nothing and copies the few files a port needs into a porting_... folder on the card. Open an issue with your car, your firmware and the info.txt from that folder. Do not post the other files in it: they are Volkswagen and Harman software. See the support matrix.

Uninstall

Green menu > AAClusterMap > Uninstall and restore original state. Or move UNINSTALL.txt out of the folder to uninstall, move this file up one folder into AAClusterMap and run the update again. Both restore the original state.

Status

  • The cluster map, and the installer run over SSH, are tested on one car (VW Golf 7.5). Driving with a route works, and the map resumes after the phone is unplugged and plugged in again.
  • Installing as a software update, and the green menu screen, are new and have had little or no testing on cars. Reports are welcome either way.
  • Read Safety and recovery before installing.

Not included

  • Steering-wheel zoom of the cluster map. No working input exists.
  • Turn arrows together with the map. A menu entry switches to arrows instead.
