OpenShelf 0.9.0
The first public release of OpenShelf: a free, open-source menu-bar utility for working with files mid-drag. Start dragging any file, tap a key, and drop it on a wedge.
Install
- Download OpenShelf-0.9.0.dmg below, open it and drag OpenShelf onto Applications.
- Open OpenShelf from Applications. It lives in the menu bar (the wheel icon), and a short guide appears on first launch.
- OpenShelf isn't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks once:
- macOS 15 and later: click Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
- macOS 14: right-click the app → Open → Open.
- Or run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OpenShelf.app
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
What's inside
⇧ Convert wheel: images, PDFs, documents, audio, video, subtitles and archives into the formats that fit them: JPG, PNG, HEIC, AVIF, WEBP, TIFF, BMP, PDF, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML, MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, GIF, SRT, VTT and ZIP, plus unzipping ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z and RAR. Results are saved next to the original and never overwrite anything. A progress card by the pointer lets you cancel.
⇧⌥ Tools wheel:
- Images: Compress, Metadata, Edit, Annotate, Add Background, Crop, Redact, Read QR
- PDFs: Combine (PDFs and images), Pages (reorder, rotate, delete), Split, Compress, Metadata
- Video: Trim, Speed, Crop, Compress, Mute. Audio: Trim, Speed
⌃ Actions wheel: put files on a floating Shelf, Add to Shelf, AirDrop, Copy, Move, Copy Path, Terminal.
Shelves: floating windows that hold files for later. Stack preview, grid and list views, multi-select, drag out to any app, Quick Look, and docking to the screen edge.
Works system-wide with no Accessibility permission, no network access and no telemetry. MP3, GIF and WebP output need brew install ffmpeg webp; those wedges are hidden otherwise.
Known limitations
- Not notarized yet (see Install step 3).
- The editor windows are new; please report anything that feels off in Issues.
