React Performance Profiler & Optimizer

A CLI tool for analyzing React applications to identify performance bottlenecks, unnecessary re-renders, large bundle sizes, and memory leaks. Built with TypeScript, Chrome DevTools Protocol, and Webpack.

Installation

npm install -g react-performance-profiler

Or install locally in your project:

npm install --save-dev react-performance-profiler

Quick Start

1. Initialize Configuration

react-profiler init

This creates a .profilerrc.json configuration file in your project.

2. Analyze Your Application

For bundle analysis only:

react-profiler analyze --path ./my-react-app

For complete analysis (requires running app):

# Start your development server first
npm start

# Then run the profiler
react-profiler analyze --url http://localhost:3000

3. View Reports

Reports are generated in the ./profiler-reports directory:

  • report.json - Raw data for programmatic access
  • report.html - Interactive visual report (open in browser)
  • report.md - Markdown documentation

Usage

Command Line Options

react-profiler analyze [options]

Options:
  -p, --path <path>           Path to React project (default: current directory)
  -w, --webpack-config <path> Path to webpack config file
  -u, --url <url>            URL of running application for runtime analysis
  -o, --output <path>        Output directory for reports (default: ./profiler-reports)
  --bundle                   Analyze bundle size (default: true)
  --rerenders                Analyze unnecessary re-renders (default: true)
  --memory                   Analyze memory leaks (default: true)
  --no-bundle                Skip bundle analysis
  --no-rerenders             Skip re-render analysis
  --no-memory                Skip memory analysis

Examples

Basic bundle analysis:

react-profiler analyze

Full analysis with custom webpack config:

react-profiler analyze \
  --path ./my-app \
  --webpack-config ./webpack.production.js \
  --url http://localhost:3000

Bundle analysis only:

react-profiler analyze --no-rerenders --no-memory

Runtime analysis only:

react-profiler analyze --no-bundle --url http://localhost:3000

Understanding the Results

Bundle Analysis

Total Size: Combined size of all output files

  • Critical: > 500KB (slow on 3G networks)
  • Warning: > 250KB per chunk

Large Modules: Individual files > 50KB

  • Consider code splitting or alternatives

Duplicate Modules: Same code bundled multiple times

  • Configure webpack deduplication
  • Check for version conflicts

Re-render Analysis

Render Count: How many times a component rendered

  • Excessive: > 10 renders in test period
  • May indicate missing memoization

Unnecessary Renders: Renders with no visual changes

  • Use React.memo for pure components
  • Implement useMemo and useCallback

Slow Renders: Average render time > 16ms

  • Causes dropped frames (< 60 FPS)
  • Optimize expensive calculations
  • Consider virtualization for lists

Memory Analysis

Heap Growth: Memory increase over time

  • Critical: Consistent growth > 1MB per interaction
  • Indicates memory leak

Detached DOM Nodes: Removed but not garbage collected

  • Missing cleanup in useEffect
  • Event listeners not removed

Retained Size: Memory that can't be freed

  • High: > 50MB total heap usage
  • Consider lazy loading and virtualization

Troubleshooting

"Webpack config not found"

Make sure you have a webpack.config.js file in your project root, or specify the path with --webpack-config.

"Cannot connect to application"

Ensure your development server is running before starting the analysis:

"Permission denied" on Linux/Mac

Install globally with sudo or use npx:

sudo npm install -g react-performance-profiler

Puppeteer installation issues

If Puppeteer fails to install, try:

npm install --save-dev puppeteer --unsafe-perm=true
