Firmware v3.0.2
Firmware v3.0.2 for ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition.
What's fixed
- Settings could be left half saved. Saving a page wrote its settings one memory key at a time. If a later write failed (or the power went off in the middle), the page showed an error while part of the change had already been stored and applied at the next start.
- Telegram/email notifications, the event history / trends / settings-copy switches and tailnet names are now each saved as one record; a damaged record means "off".
- The Network, Tailscale, System and MQTT pages, 4via6 and a secrets restore now save as one transaction: if any part fails, nothing of that save is kept, and a save interrupted by a power cut is undone at the next start.
- Live changes (time zone, session timeout, web password switch, transmit power, modem sleep, access-point auto-off, DNS relay, MTU, 4via6) apply only after the whole save succeeded.
- An invalid 4via6 subnet is refused before any Tailscale setting is stored; a failed Wi-Fi list save no longer changes the running list.
- Settings from 3.0.0 and 3.0.1 are carried over automatically, and going back to 3.0.1 keeps them as well.
No new features. Existing 3.x settings and the partition layout are preserved.
Install or update
- Already on 3.x: use the Firmware update card or upload
firmware.bin. - New device: browser installer or the Easy Install ZIP below.
- Coming from 2.x: follow the 3.x migration guide before updating. Do not upload a 3.x image directly to an old 2.x layout.
One image supports ESP32-S3 N8R8/N16R8 with 8 MB octal PSRAM. W5500 Ethernet and cellular uplinks remain experimental. Factory images are for new installations and erase settings.
Tested
Automated offline campaign on the release source, including fault-injection tests of the actual storage code and a simulated power cut at every step of a save and of its recovery. On an N16R8 test board with this exact image: System, Network, Tailscale and MTU settings saved in one request each were kept after a restart; a Tailscale save with an invalid 4via6 subnet was refused and changed nothing; the published 3.0.1 read all of them after switching back, and 3.0.2 again after returning; feature and page checks passed. The migration of 3.0.0/3.0.1 notification, history and tailnet-name settings was checked on the same board with the 3.0.2 beta build (same storage code for those records). No physical memory fault or power cut was injected on the board.

ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition — Firmware v3.0.0-beta.1
ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition
Firmware v3.0.0-beta.1 — pre-release (beta) for testing. First beta of
the 3.0 platform release: a new 8 MB flash layout, one image with every
Web UI language, a reorganised Web UI and new local features that are all
off until you switch them on (off, they use no memory, processor time or
flash writes).
Before you install
- Boards: ESP32-S3 with 8 MB octal PSRAM and at least 8 MB of flash
(N8R8, N16R8). Tested on an N16R8; the N8R8 uses the same layout but has
not been tested on hardware yet. 4 MB boards stay on 2.x. - From 2.x, install once over USB — the 2.x updater cannot install 3.0
(larger update slots). Your settings are kept:- Easy Install:
UPDATE-KEEP-SETTINGS(Windows) or
sh macos-linux/install.sh update(macOS/Linux), or - the web installer with Erase device unticked.
The network-only path (2.1 migration bridge, see
MIGRATION-3.0.md)
is not published yet.
- Easy Install:
- From 3.0 on, updates work over the air again (System → Firmware update;
enable the beta channel to see betas).
New
- Web UI, reorganised: long pages show one group at a time (Network:
Internet · Gateway Wi-Fi · Clients · Services; Tailscale: Connection ·
Peers · Options; Diagnostics: Tests · Logs · History · Hardware;
Automation: Home Assistant · Notifications; System: General · Access ·
Maintenance · Logging & SNMP · About), every page has the same width, and
Wake-on-LAN now sits in Devices & Recovery. - Every language in one image (English, Italian, Spanish, Chinese) and
the W5500 Ethernet driver (experimental, off until configured). - Event history (Diagnostics → History): starts, crashes, updates, uplink
and tailnet changes, failed admin logins, settings copies — kept in the
new storage area of the flash. - Trends on Status: memory, uplink traffic, Wi-Fi signal, CPU and online
peers; 6 hours in detail, about 45 days in summary. - Settings copies (System → Maintenance): up to three copies of all
settings, by hand or before each update; a restore needs the admin
password and also brings back the admin password of that moment. Copies
are never downloadable and a factory reset erases them. - Tailnet names for local devices (Tailscale → Options): devices on the
gateway's Wi-Fi — and optionally on your home network — reach peers as
nasornas.<tailnet>.ts.netwithout a Tailscale client. - Telegram and email notifications (Automation → Notifications), next to
ntfy. Email uses TLS with certificate checks and never sends the password
without TLS. - Throughput test (Diagnostics → Tests): the gateway downloads from a URL
(a NAS through the tailnet, or the internet), or the browser downloads from
the gateway. - Cellular uplink (experimental): UART modem with a SIM, not yet tested
with a real modem. - Setup wizard: a Monitor and get alerts role and optional extras.
- More free internal RAM: application tables moved to PSRAM.
Not in this beta
- Dynamic DNS (DuckDNS, Cloudflare): left out for now; may return later.
Tested for this beta
Automated offline campaign (86 checks: unit, integration and browser tests,
firmware build). On an N16R8 test board: USB update keeping settings, Web UI,
event history and trends, settings copy, tailnet names with real peers and
the LAN DNS listener, SNMP v2c queries, notification input checks, the
throughput test and a ping through the tunnel. Telegram and email delivery
have not been tried with real accounts yet.

ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition — Firmware v2.1.0 (migration bridge to 3.0)
ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition
Firmware v2.1.0 — migration bridge to 3.0. For gateways on 2.x only. It
is a normal 2.x update that adds one thing: moving the gateway to the 3.0
flash layout over the network, without a USB cable, keeping every setting
(WiFi, Tailscale identity, passwords, rules).
How
- On a 2.x gateway: System → Firmware update → Check now, then install
2.1.0. (On 2.0.0 or 2.0.1, whose GitHub updater does not work, upload
thisfirmware.binby hand once.) - After the restart: turn on the web UI lock if it is off (System →
Access → Require the admin password) and sign in — the migration
needs it. - System → Maintenance → Move to the 3.0 flash layout: tick the
confirmation and press Migrate to 3.0. The gateway restarts once to
prepare, downloads the newest 3.x from GitHub, checks it and restarts
into 3.x (a few minutes). Keep the power on.
If anything fails before the last step nothing changes and 2.1.0 keeps
running; if 3.x does not start, the gateway returns to 2.1.0.
Needs an ESP32-S3 with 8 MB octal PSRAM and at least 8 MB of flash (N8R8,
N16R8); the migration refuses smaller boards, which stay on 2.x. Tested end
to end on an N16R8 from the GitHub releases. Over USB instead: install 3.0
with its Easy Install package (UPDATE-KEEP-SETTINGS) or the web installer
with Erase device unticked; settings are kept either way.

ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition — Firmware v2.0.4-beta.2
ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition
Firmware v2.0.4-beta.2 — pre-release (beta) for testing. Web UI fixes on
top of v2.0.4-beta.1. No change to routing, VPN or update behaviour. Gateways
on the stable channel keep v2.0.2; with the beta channel enabled in
System → Firmware the gateway offers this build, or upload firmware.bin by hand.
New in beta 2
- Devices & Recovery shows results live. After Check now or Recover with
WoL the device badge follows the job (Checking the service…, then
Reachable · 12 ms or Not reachable) without reloading the page. Fields
you are editing are kept, and the page stops asking once the job ends. - Every Devices & Recovery field explains what it is for and shows an
example while empty (for instancee.g. 192.168.1.20 or nas.lan). Optional
ports are left empty instead of showing 0. - The
.localname is easier to change. Change, next to Name on this
network on the Status page, opens the hostname field. While you type it
shows the resulting address and whether a restart is needed. Until the
restart the pages show the name that answers now. - The Status page stops refreshing while the browser tab is hidden and updates
at once when you come back (useful on phones).
Already in beta 1
- Status: the Service Gateway card appears only while a service rule is
enabled or temporary access is open. - iPhone and iPad: the sign-in and setup screens no longer show the dashboard
underneath when the keyboard opens. - Menu in setup order with an icon for Devices & Recovery; on phones the menu
button opens and closes the menu. - Consistent spacing and column layout in Devices & Recovery and other pages.

ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition — Firmware v2.0.4-beta.1
ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition
Firmware v2.0.4-beta.1 — pre-release (beta) for testing. Web UI fixes on
top of v2.0.3. No change to routing, VPN or update behaviour. Gateways on the
stable channel keep v2.0.2; with the beta channel enabled in
System → Firmware the gateway offers this build, or upload firmware.bin by hand.
Improved
- Status page: the Service Gateway card appears only while a service rule
is enabled or temporary access is open, just above What do you want to do?.
Choosing the role during setup, or saving a disabled rule, no longer shows it. - iPhone and iPad: the sign-in, password and setup screens no longer show
the dashboard underneath when the on-screen keyboard opens. - Menu: tabs follow the setup flow (Status, Network, Tailscale, Firewall,
Devices & Recovery, Automation, Diagnostics, System); Devices & Recovery has
its own icon. On phones the menu button opens and closes the menu, which
now opens below the bar. - Devices & Recovery: consistent spacing on desktop and phone, one switch
per line, fields in columns on wide screens and a header with the state for
each device profile. In simple mode the guard thresholds are an advanced
setting. - Field rows on Network, Automation and System use the same column layout.
Versions and channels
From this release betas are numbered: X.Y.Z-beta.1, beta.2, … then the
stable X.Y.Z. On the beta channel the most advanced build wins and a stable
release is always newer than its betas; the stable channel ignores betas.

ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition · Firmware v2.0.3 (beta)
ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition
Firmware v2.0.3 — pre-release (beta) for testing. A cleaner Web UI that
shows live status first. No change to routing, VPN or update behaviour.
Gateways on the stable channel keep v2.0.2; enable the beta channel in
System → Firmware to receive it, or upload firmware.bin by hand.
Improved
- Status page shows live status first. The Service Gateway card appears
only when service rules exist, a temporary rule is open or that role was
chosen during setup; What do you want to do? moved to the end of the page
and still offers every guide. - No guide opens by itself at sign-in. Roles chosen during setup are
highlighted in What do you want to do?. A guide's exposure acknowledgement
is asked once per browser; new service rules still start disabled. - The Uplink card shows the board's own name on the network
(esp32-tailnet-xxxx.local, as a link). - A recovery-only access point is shown as Standby (it turns on if the home
WiFi is lost) instead of Disabled. - Free internal RAM replaces Free memory; its bar is coloured by absolute
headroom, so the normal ~20 KB is no longer shown as an alarm. - Firewall in simple mode shows a summary of active rules instead of an empty page.
- Network: accurate hostname hint (DHCP name and
name.local, empty uses the
board's own name), TTL override moved to advanced settings, the LAN → Tailnet
card is named LAN → Tailnet service gateway. - Long values in status rows wrap at natural points on phones.
- New strings translated into Italian, Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition · Firmware v2.0.2
ESP32 Tailnet Gateway — Mattboxx Edition
Firmware v2.0.2 fixes the built-in GitHub firmware update and keeps more
memory for the VPN. Recommended for every installation.
Updating from v2.0.0 or v2.0.1: do it once by hand. The built-in
updater of those versions restarts the gateway without installing anything.
Downloadfirmware.binbelow and upload it in System → Firmware
(settings are kept), or use the Easy Install keep settings script over
USB. Later updates work from the Web UI again. If automatic installation is
enabled on v2.0.0/v2.0.1, the gateway may restart at its install hour until
this manual update is done.
Fixed
- GitHub firmware installation (Install latest update and scheduled
automatic installation) could restart the gateway with a panic while
beginning the update. Flash operations now run on the existing internal-RAM
stack of the admin server instead of the downloader's external-RAM stack,
without reserving another task stack. - An update could hang until restart when the admin server's internal work
message was lost under low memory. The updater now notices an operation that
never started, retries it once and then reports a timeout; an operation
already running is always completed. - VPN startup memory: the standard ESP-IDF panic handler is used again,
which returns internal RAM to the VPN workers. Reset history and pre-crash
capture remain; full reporting after an unrecoverable cache fault is
best-effort.
Unchanged
Settings, app identity, partition layout and update verification are kept.
Everything added in v2.0.1 remains: first-boot pairing, the address shown at
the end of setup and the per-board esp32-tailnet-xxxx.local name.
Install and update
firmware.bin: WiFi application image for System → Firmware (keeps settings).firmware-eth.bin: experimental W5500 application image (English-only UI).- Factory images and new device / ERASE modes remove configuration. For an
existing gateway prefer System → Firmware; back up first and never use a
factory image for a Web UI update.
New devices: browser installer on the project website, the Easy Install
ZIP for Windows/macOS/Linux, or the factory image.
Compatibility and limits
Default target: ESP32-S3 N16R8. W5500 remains experimental and needs
compatible external Ethernet hardware and pin configuration. This community
client is not a replacement for the official Tailscale client and does not
promise full policy parity, Secure Boot, signed images or guaranteed
out-of-band recovery.
