Write Newton apps the NTK way, without NTK, and run VSNewt on Intel Macs and Linux too.
Apps the NTK way
- NewtonScript: New App Project writes an app that only says what differs from the defaults:
newtAppName, newtAppIcon, newt.theForm, plusAddStepFormandStepDeclareas in NTK. It also writes anicon.png. F7 builds it withnewtc -build. Sources that return the package frame themselves build as before. - NTK's names for protos and constants (
protoFloatNGo,vjParentCenterH,vfPen(2), ...) just work: newtc has the NewtonOS 2.1 platform built in. Sources that define these constants themselves still work. - Icons and pictures from PNG files:
MakeIconFromPNGandMakeBitmapFromPNG(black and white or 16 grays, NTK's mask choices), and an app's highlighted icon. ReadStreamFile,IsGlobalConstant,UndefineGlobalConstant,DefConst.- The setting
vsnewt.platformuses one of NTK's platform files (e.g.Newton 2.1) instead of the built-in platform. - An error in a file that
Loadruns now stops the build, and a missing file says where newtc looked for it.
More systems
- One VSIX per system: Apple Silicon and Intel Macs (macOS 13 or later), and Linux on x64 and arm64. Each one bundles its own
newtc. - Intel Macs and Linux are new and less tried than Apple Silicon. On Linux, Newton views can draw slightly differently (some patterns, inverted text). There is no Windows version yet.

In VS Code, open the Extensions view, click …, and choose Install from VSIX…, or run code --install-extension vsnewt-<system>-0.4.0.vsix. On Linux, newtc needs the X11 libraries a desktop has (libX11, libXft, fontconfig). The README has a quick start.
The bundled newtc is newtc 0.4.0. That release also has newtdump, which reads a Newton's ROM and PCMCIA cards and can write a card as a file for Einstein.
NewtPlay, the Mac app that runs Newton packages without VS Code, is unchanged: NewtPlay-0.1-macOS.zip is in the 0.2.0 release.
