Release list
Aviary 0.1.0-alpha.1
Aviary is a native macOS home for the config your coding agents actually read — the skills, prompts, agents, MCP servers and instruction files scattered across ~/.claude, ~/.codex and your projects.
This is a first alpha. It is unsigned, single-developer software that writes to live agent configuration. Read the install note before running it.
Install
Aviary is ad-hoc signed but not notarised — I don't have an Apple Developer certificate. The app is well-formed and verifies, but macOS can't confirm who built it.
- Open the DMG and drag aviary to Applications
- If macOS refuses to open it, right-click the app → Open and confirm
- Still blocked?
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/aviary.app
Universal binary — Apple Silicon and Intel. macOS 11+.

What works
| Library | Every skill, agent, command and prompt across both runners, deduplicated by canonical path so a skill symlinked into two runners is one row. Edit with atomic writes, a snapshot to ~/.aviary/history before every change, and a refusal if the file moved under you. |
| Context | The resolved instruction stack for a runner and directory, in load order, with token costs read from the real files. |
| MCP Servers | Every server discovered across runners, plugins and projects. Secrets are never read — only env var names reach the UI. |
| Chat | Runs your real CLI, so tools, MCP and skills all apply. Model picker and reasoning effort are discovered from the runner, not hardcoded. |
| Inspiration | A media board that agents can query. Drop images in; they're copied into a content-addressed store so tiles survive the original being moved. |
| Projects | Discovers candidate repos and registers them. |
aviary-media
The board is also an MCP server, so any agent — inside Aviary or in a bare terminal — can search your references:
claude mcp add aviary-media -- /Applications/aviary.app/Contents/MacOS/aviary-media
Then: "find that grainy teal gradient from my references". It exposes search_media, get_media and list_collections, and is read-only — an agent cannot delete your files.
Known gaps
- No auto-updater. You'll have to download the next one manually.
- Chat sessions don't persist across relaunch.
- Bundles don't exist yet. They're the spec's headline idea and none of it is built.
- MCP tool definitions aren't counted in Context — their size is only knowable after a live handshake, so they're shown as unmeasurable rather than guessed.
- File watching isn't implemented. Use Rebuild index in Settings after changing files outside the app.
dontAskandbypassPermissionsare hidden until you enable them in Settings. They let a runner execute commands without asking; turn them on deliberately.
Data
Everything is local. Aviary makes no network requests of its own.
~/.aviary/data.db— your projects, preferences, media, collections~/.aviary/cache.db— scan caches, safe to delete at any time~/.aviary/history— pre-write snapshots
Deleting cache.db costs a re-index and nothing else.
