LinuxFiles 0.1.0-alpha4

Fourth public alpha of LinuxFiles, an unofficial native Linux port of Files by the Files Community. Expect rough edges and keep backups of anything you care about.

Highlights

  • Tags are preserved when extended-attribute writes fail on read-only files. The tags database stays authoritative across reloads, restarts, export and import, so successive edits no longer resurrect stale tags or drop saved tags (#153, fixes #148).
  • Context-menu models are built off the UI thread, with command state captured before background work. Stale menus are rejected and rebuilt menus retain their placement; selection handling avoids redundant work and reduces UI stalls (#155).
  • Upstream-sync preparation adds a Windows path allowlist and a guarded conflict-only prune helper, with documented dry-run results. No Windows files have been removed yet (#154). The sync workflow now updates existing sync branches and PRs (#152).
  • The Rust backend benchmark is a no-go: it misses the required speedup over optimized C#, and application end-to-end gains remain unproven. This is benchmark documentation only for the release; the application keeps its C# backend (#151, benchmark findings).

Install

Requires x86_64 Linux with X11 or XWayland. Packages are self-contained.

Arch (AUR), which also installs the optional polkit root helper:

yay -S linuxfiles-bin    # or paru -S linuxfiles-bin

AppImage:

chmod +x Files-x86_64.AppImage && ./Files-x86_64.AppImage

Flatpak bundle (root actions are off in the sandbox):

flatpak install --user Files-x86_64.flatpak
flatpak run io.github.memergamer.LinuxFiles

Nix (flake, no root actions):

nix run github:MemerGamer/LinuxFiles

Tarball:

tar xzf files-linux-x64.tar.gz && ./linux-x64/Files

To install the tarball for your user, run scripts/linux/install-local.sh --from <path to linux-x64> from a clone of the repository. files-packaging.tar.gz is for packagers.

Checksums

Download SHA256SUMS into the same folder as your download and run:

sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS

Known limits

  • Still X11/XWayland only. On niri/xwayland-satellite, window opacity is disabled and backdrop modes fall back to Solid. Mica/Acrylic is not implemented on Linux.
  • Select-all in folders with 10,000 items is still slow due to Uno selection handling.
  • Text and icons can remain blurry on XWayland without the experimental Detect display scale from the compositor setting or UNO_DISPLAY_SCALE_OVERRIDE. The setting is off by default and requires a restart; Uno font hinting at 100 percent scale remains a limitation. #113 remains open.
  • Uno's content Arrow cursor mapping can still differ from the theme on some setups.
  • Plain Nix installs, AppImage and Flatpak keep root actions disabled. The flake still pins alpha3; alpha4 assets and hashes require a follow-up update. Real NixOS authentication and packaged runtime checks remain pending.
  • The Windows build is not restored yet (phase 8).
