MIDI-GPT for REAPER v0.1.0 is the first full release. It brings MIDI-GPT into REAPER through a single dashboard, and installs with one click on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Install

Download MIDI-GPT-for-REAPER-v0.1.0.zip below, extract it, and double-click the installer for your OS:

OS Double-click
macOS Install - Mac.command
Linux Install - Linux.sh
Windows Install - Windows.bat

Then load MIDI-GPT.py in REAPER once (Actions > Show Action List > Load ReaScript...). See REAPER Setup.

Requirements: REAPER 64-bit (v6+), Python 3.10–3.12, git. On Windows (10/11, 64-bit), the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 14.40+ is also required, and the installer offers to install it.

Highlights

One dashboard for the whole workflow

  • MIDI-GPT.py opens a single window for server and model selection, track setup, generation settings, per-track controls, running a generation, and a log console.
  • Global options: context length, bars/tracks per step, seed; temperature, top-p, top-k; hard polyphony and density limits; validation with automatic retries.
  • Per-track controls: Ignore and Autoregressive toggles, density/polyphony/duration limits, pitch masking and register shaping, and Remix (a variation of a track's existing bars).
  • Controls adapt to the loaded model and to each track's role (drums or melodic), so options that don't apply are hidden instead of silently doing nothing.
  • Multiple variations per request, with a candidate picker.
  • Hover hints, a Settings popup, and seven themes.

Automatic instruments

  • Setup Tracks / Setup Selected Tracks detect each track's General MIDI instrument and add a ready-to-play Sforzando + Arachno GM instance. No manual routing or template tracks.
  • The Arachno SoundFont is converted once with Sforzando's own converter, so tracks play on a fresh machine without a manual import into Sforzando.
  • Works with Sforzando's VST and VST3 builds on macOS and Windows, and with Plogue's Linux beta (VST3).

Installers on every OS

  • install.sh (macOS/Linux) and install.ps1 (Windows) do the same steps. They install the Python backend, ReaPack, ReaImGui and the Arachno SoundFont, and configure REAPER's ReaScript Python settings.
  • One-line install is also available: bootstrap.sh / bootstrap.ps1.
  • update and uninstall scripts for every OS.
  • Installer flags: --reaper-only, --backend-only, --torch-gpu, --skip-deps, --skip-reaper-config, --midigpt-src.

Backend

  • The plugin now talks to a stateless MIDI-GPT HTTP server, local or remote, replacing the old MMM/C++ backend. Set its address with Change... in the dashboard.
  • Supports the Yellow (default), Expressive and Prism model families. The dashboard shows the loaded model's family and offers only the controls it uses.

Breaking changes

  • JSFX support is removed. Everything goes through the dashboard (MIDI-GPT.py). The other scripts in the folder are helpers the dashboard runs and aren't meant to be loaded on their own.
  • The track name decides the instrument. Name a track after its instrument (see INSTRUMENTS.md); detecting it from the MIDI content is only a fallback.

Known limitations

  • Automatic instrument setup doesn't support Sforzando's AU or CLAP builds; use VST or VST3.
  • Sforzando for Linux is a beta from Plogue and may be less stable than the macOS/Windows builds.
  • ReaImGui installs without checksum verification, because Codeberg publishes no checksums for it. The installer prints a warning when this happens.
