Manju IME 1.0.0 is an input method editor (IME) for Windows that types the Manchu script: you spell a word in Latin letters, and the candidate window shows it in Manchu letters. It is made for people who are learning Manchu.

Install

Download Manju-IME-1.0.0-win-x64.zip and unzip it into a folder you will keep. In the Installer folder, run Install Manju IME.exe. Installing Manju IME shows every page of Setup, and the Requirements list what Manju IME needs.

The programs are not code-signed, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may warn when you start Setup, and where Smart App Control is on, Windows blocks Setup.

Changes since 1.0.0-rc.1

  • Möllendorff is the default input scheme.
  • The comma and full stop keys give the Manchu comma ᠈ and full stop ᠉. The Mongolian comma and full stop are no longer on the keyboard, and the [ and ] keys give [ and ].
  • In Microsoft Word, Manju IME types when it is listed under English (United States).
  • In Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, the other programs built on Chromium, and programs that show web pages with Microsoft Edge WebView2, a shortcut with Ctrl, Alt, or the Windows key, or a function key, pressed in the middle of a word, first puts the word into the document as you typed it; a key that takes you to another program, such as Alt+Tab or Win+D, drops the word.
  • The language page of Setup lists every language in your Windows language list; a language without a language identifier of its own is shown in grey and marked Not supported.
  • The release carries the licence of Manju IME, in Runtime\Resource\LICENSE.txt.
  • The install script no longer takes -Silent, which did nothing.
  • The source code of Manju IME is in this repository.

Upgrading from 1.0.0-rc.1

Unzip the new release and run its Install Manju IME.exe. Setup takes the installed copy out of Windows and installs the new one with its own settings file, so a scheme or theme you chose in the old configuration.yaml is not carried over; copy your changes into the new file if you want them.

Known issues

  • The six display schemes show the Mongolian vowel separator (U+180E) as an apostrophe, while every input scheme types it with the hyphen key; a spelling copied from the display does not type the separator.
  • ᡯᡳ᠌ (zi) cannot be typed with the BabelPad, Hu, Möllendorff, and Norman input schemes: their sources spell it dz (Hu: z) by its place in the word, and the key tables of Manju IME 1.0.0 do not look at the place. Type it with Abkai or Refined Romanisation (draft). The Möllendorff display scheme spells it dzi.
  • ᡮᡟ (ci) cannot be typed with the Norman input scheme, for the same reason: Norman spells it ts.
  • In a very long word, about 50 letters or more, the candidate window falls behind the keys. Typing word by word is not affected.
  • In a word that contains the Mongolian vowel separator, typed with the - key, the candidate window can show a letter next to the separator in a different form from the one in the document; the text itself is entered correctly.

This is a release candidate of Manju IME 1.0.0, published for testing before the final release. Manju IME is an input method editor (IME) for Windows that types the Manchu script: you spell a word in Latin letters, and the candidate window shows it in Manchu letters.

The programs in this release report version 1.0.0, as the final 1.0.0 release will. To tell the two builds apart, compare the SHA-256 checksums below with those published with the final release.

Install

Download Manju-IME-1.0.0-rc.1-win-x64.zip and unzip it into a folder you will keep. In the Installer folder, run Install Manju IME.exe. Installing Manju IME shows every page of Setup, and the Requirements list what Manju IME needs.

The programs are not code-signed, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may warn when you start Setup, and where Smart App Control is on, Windows may block Setup.

  • In Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and the other programs built on Chromium, a shortcut with Ctrl, Alt or the Windows key, or a function key, pressed in the middle of a word may leave a dot in the document or drop the word. Press Space, Enter or Esc to end the word first.
  • In Microsoft Word, when Manju IME is listed under English (United States), the keys can go into the document without the IME. A fix is planned for 1.0.0.
  • The comma and full stop keys give the Mongolian comma ᠂ and full stop ᠃, and the [ and ] keys give the Manchu comma ᠈ and full stop ᠉. Manju IME 1.0.0 gives the Manchu marks on the comma and full stop keys.
