Levels
Levels form the fundamental structure of the Backrooms. Each one represents a distinct region within this reality, characterized by its own architecture, environmental conditions, resources, anomalies, and operating rules. Although they all belong to the Backrooms, no two levels are exactly alike; some feature relatively stable and predictable spaces, while others completely defy the known laws of physics and logic.
To facilitate their study and documentation, the explorers developed a classification system based on the nature of each region. Levels correspond to the large, independent structures that make up the Backrooms. Sublevels are sectors closely linked to a main level, sharing some of its properties, though they possess their own characteristics that distinguish them from the rest of the environment. Finally, Rooms represent localized anomalies within a level or sublevel. These can range from a simple room to large complexes, but their scope and structural dependence are not sufficient for them to be considered independent levels.
Most known levels are organized using a numbering system that begins at Level 0, considered the starting point of the modern classification. From there, the positive levels extend outward—comprising the majority of documented regions—along with the negative levels, locations where anomalies tend to intensify and the behavior of the environment is considerably more chaotic and unpredictable. In these regions, it is common to encounter severe alterations in geometry, spatial stability, and the laws governing the level itself.
However, not all places can be classified by a number. There are regions whose nature is so anomalous that they defy any known classification system. These are called Enigmatic Levels and are usually identified only by a title. Their properties remain poorly understood, access to them can rarely be consistently replicated, and much of the available information about them comes from isolated accounts or incomplete records.
Despite decades of exploration, the true extent of the Backrooms remains unknown. New levels, sublevels, and rooms are constantly being discovered, making this reality a constantly expanding environment where every expedition may uncover a previously undocumented anomaly or a region entirely unknown to humanity.
