XQ Audio! plus... New Robby Mode!

@aronson aronson released this 20 Jul 15:34

What's new

  • XQ Audio (new toggle): music and voice sound noticeably cleaner — the noise channel still sounds exactly like real hardware.
  • Robby Mode (new toggle): brings back the classic sound from before all this audio tuning, for a direct side-by-side comparison.
    • Note: Robby Mode will always disable other audio enhancements
  • Disabled buggy rewind: Fixed a boot crash some people were hitting with Rewind Capture on
    • Note: this is disabled until I've finished my DDR burst work to fix it on the new ~16 MHz core to prevent microstutters

The numbers, visualized

image Testing methodology can found within repo image You can definitely hear the difference! Try toggling the audio live to hear noise channel instruments in music restored faithfully.

Test suite provided

The two open-source .GBA roms are from the gba-sound-demo project and feature the two WAV files attached — I know these have proven useful in testing in the past!

Hardware accuracy improvement build!

With all the features of the previous v0.0.1 on top of this one, the big win was:

Audio accuracy greatly improved

With correct sampling (technical things like "bias" and "clipping") the GBA noise channel and music now sounds authentic, see upstream issue #143

RTC fixed in Pokémon hacks

Resolves upstream issue #150.

Small video rendering bugs fixed

Sometimes things like a mosaic effect for background 2 was applied to background 3 instead, or the effect for BG3 outright dropped by hardware, etc.

Includes small Pixel Processing Unit (PPU) improvements. Games should visibly render more cleanly.

WIP: Wireless Adapter emulation

It's included in the build but isn't ready yet and you'd need to compile another program just to try and start the broken feature so don't worry about it BUT it may lead to something cool later. Don't worry about this option in multiplayer, it won't do anything just yet

Accuracy-focused multiplayer expansion for GBA_MiSTer

Let's get it out there! Wanna play GBA couch co-op on your MiSTer? This is the core for you c:

Both cores are built from the upstream project's accuracy branch for those original fixes among others added later by myself.

Changelog: 2P core

  • New: multiplayer over the link cable: two players on one MiSTer (side-by-side), or link to a real GBA via SNAC.
    • Verified in-game with:
  • New display options: show Both players, or fullscreen either player (game keeps running for both); optional separator line.
  • New audio options: hear Player 1, Player 2, a mix — or split P1-left / P2-right for headphone couch play.
  • 2P build won't show savestate/cheat options that don't exist on it to save core space
  • Link-port (SIO) register fixes for untested/unsupported SNAC link cable features
    • WIP: be careful of 5V vs 3.3V if using real GBA hardware with your GB EXT SNAC extensions!! (optional, rare)

Changelog: 1P core

  • RTC fixed for all clock carts (Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, Boktai…):
    • a single game's compatibility hack is now ONLY active on that game only
    • this previously always-on hack silently broke clock-chip detection for every other RTC game such as custom Pokémon hacks
  • The in-game clock now sets itself from your system time on first boot instead of a fixed 2009 date
    • Note: Existing saves without core-- stored RTC data will see a one-time time jump to adjust
