Application auto-flagged as malware on mac and deleted - Compromised? #474

Description

@foxwhat

Describe the bug
When attempting to open the app on mac, it is flagged as malware and immediately moved to the trash

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behaviour:

  1. Download micropad via the link at https://getmicropad.com/#download
  2. Open the .dmg and install it
  3. Attempt to open the application
  4. See mac os dialogue 'Malware Blocked and Moved to Bin : “µPad.app” was not opened because it contains malware. This action did not harm your Mac.'
  5. app is now in the trash

Expected behaviour
I know unsigned software is a thing with mac, I use unsigned and third party software and they make it frustratingly diffficult to use. But this is not warning me that I have downloaded an unknown app and making me do work arounds, the usual rightclick open anyway/security settings allow-anyway are not available to me, it's telling me it's straight up malware.

If this is just a known mac thing, I'll see if I can strip whatever xattr quarantine attributes it's getting flagged with, but I'd like to have confirmation I have the correct file via checksum or something, and not that the download has actually been compromised.

Screenshots
If applicable, add screenshots to help explain your problem.

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Mac os 15.7
  • I do have SIP and Gatekeeper enabled for now, and while I'm not opposed to going around those protections, I'll only do it for software I can check out in other ways.
