What's new in Sybl 1.0.13

• Closing Settings is easier. Settings has a Close button at the top right, and Esc closes it too. Clicking a course or a view in the sidebar takes you straight there.
• Sybl goes by its name. The taskbar and the app switcher now call it Sybl.

On Windows, this is the first update since 1.0.8, so it also brings everything from 1.0.9 to 1.0.12: Settings in four tabs under your name at the bottom left, a way to choose which classes you are in, a tidier window and a clearer sync line.

What changed

• The app is called Sybl, with an icon of its own: a ring three quarters closed, where the gap is the time left. Nothing else changed in this version, and everything you have done is still here.

If you are coming from 1.0.6 or earlier

1.0.7 is in this update too, and it asks you to sign in with your email the first time you open it. A window of its own opens instead of the app: your email, a code from the email, and then your calendar address if it does not already have one. There is no way past it. Nothing you have done is lost and everything is still on your machine, but if you have no email to hand, this is not a good moment to update. 1.0.7's page describes that release in full.

The first open needs one extra step. The app is not signed with an Apple Developer ID, so a double-click will be refused. Control-click Sybl in Applications, choose Open, then Open again in the dialog. You do this once.

If you update from inside the app rather than from this page, the app keeps the file name it already had, so you will still see Assignment Tracker in Applications with the new name and icon inside it. That is the same app and there is nothing to fix. If you would rather have the file called Sybl, drag it from this disk image and move the old one to the Trash first, so you do not end up with two copies of the same app.

Your coursework stays on your machine, and it keeps ten daily backups of itself.

What signing in sends, and only once you sign in: your email address, what you ticked and what you typed (your notes, and the names of items you added by hand), and the address of your calendar. Not what your calendar says, and nothing about grades. It is stored in Canada. The sign-in emails pass through Twilio SendGrid in the United States, which sees your address and the code and nothing else. You can download everything the account holds, or delete the account and everything in it, from Settings.

Without signing in there is no account, and in that state nothing is sent anywhere except the request that fetches your own calendar.

This version will not open its store in 1.0.6 or earlier, so going back needs one of those daily backups rather than an older installer.

The one thing to know before updating

This version asks you to sign in with your email the first time you open it, and it does not let you past that. A window of its own opens instead of the app: your email, a code from the email, and then your calendar address if it does not already have one. Nothing you have done is lost, and everything is still on your machine. But if you have no email to hand, this is not a good moment to update.

What changed

• An account, and your work on your other computer. Sign in on a second machine and the same ticks, notes and edits show on both. Your calendar address goes with them, so the second machine connects your calendar by itself instead of asking you to paste it again.
• A set-up window on the first launch. It walks through the account and the calendar, in order, with the steps shown at the top. Connecting a calendar used to be something you had to find in Settings.
• No password anywhere. Signing in is a code sent to your email address, typed into the app.
• One icon in the notification area instead of two. The app was asking Windows for two, created at different moments of launch, and the second had no menu and did nothing when clicked.
• The top of the window no longer overlaps itself at small widths. The title, the search box and the buttons beside them give ground in that order as the window narrows, and long titles end in an ellipsis.
• The course and type menus on the add-item form are drawn by the app, so they match the rest of it.

Windows was on 1.0.4 and skips 1.0.5 and 1.0.6, which were never cut for it. The last three items above are those two releases' changes, arriving here.

What changed

• One icon in the menu bar. The app was asking macOS for two of them, one declared in its configuration and one built in its own code, and they were created at different moments of launch. The early one occasionally landed at the far left, over the Apple menu, instead of in the status area. There is one now, and a test fails the build if the second declaration ever comes back.
• The window stays below the menu bar. Dragged up by its top edge it could be pushed under the bar and become hard to get hold of. It comes back down to the top of the screen's work area.
• The top of the window no longer overlaps itself at small widths. The title, the search box and the buttons beside them give ground in that order as the window narrows, and long titles end in an ellipsis rather than running underneath something else.

They were the system's own menus, which on a Mac meant a grey glossy button and a menu in the system's blue, on a dark window that draws everything else itself. What changed

• It starts when you sign in again. A fresh install of 1.0.2 or 1.0.3 did not start with Windows unless you ticked the box in Settings yourself. The app was checking whether it had been installed by looking in the wrong folder, decided it had not been, and left the setting alone. It now looks for the uninstaller the installer puts beside it, which is there wherever you installed it. If you ticked the box by hand, nothing changes for you.
• Windows and macOS are now built from one set of source, so the two will carry the same version number and the same fixes from here on. Nothing about how the Windows app looks or behaves changed because of it.

Windows x64

Download AssignmentTracker_1.0.4_x64-setup.exe and run it.

Windows will probably warn you. The installer is not signed with a code-signing certificate, so SmartScreen may say the publisher is unknown. More info > Run anyway.

The app draws its window with Microsoft's WebView2 runtime, which Windows 11 includes and almost every Windows 10 machine already has. On the rare machine without it, the installer fetches it for you, which needs a working internet connection.
