Moonfin v2.8.1 Release Notes
A follow-up to 2.8.0 that adds a setup wizard for new installs, fixes the Seerr and layout problems people reported, and brings more things in line with the other Moonfin clients.
What's New
Setup Wizard
- New installs now get a setup wizard. After you sign in for the first time, Moonfin walks you through where you want the navigation bar, which media bar style you like, and whether you prefer the classic or modern home rows and detail screens. Every choice shows a live preview built from your own library artwork, so you can see what you're picking instead of guessing from a name.
- It only asks about things you haven't already decided. If a setting is already stored or comes down from your server profile, that question is skipped, so a second TV signed into the same account usually never sees it. You can skip the whole thing, and skipping doesn't write anything, so nothing gets locked in. There's a Run setup again entry in Settings if you want to revisit your choices.
Looks
- A new Aya media bar style. It's a rounded hero frame that floats in the page rather than filling the screen, with the title's logo in the corner, thin bar indicators, and the page backdrop staying alive behind it. That brings the media bar to six styles plus Off.
- The Glass theme is here, matching the other clients. It's a dark frosted look with translucent surfaces and a blue accent. The blur only applies when Glass is the theme you've selected, so nothing else pays for it, and older TVs that can't blur simply get the plain translucent version.
- Seerr genre cards look like Seerr's own. Each genre now gets its own duotone color treatment with the genre name in large type across the card, so Action reads red and Horror reads black, and a film that sits in several genres no longer shows the same artwork on every card.
Matching the Other Moonfin Clients
- Libraries can group into rows. Movie and TV libraries can now be broken into rows by Genre, Parental Rating, Decade, or Studio, set per library. Rating groups are ordered mildest to strongest rather than alphabetically, and decades run newest first.
- The playlist library groups by what each playlist holds, splitting into Video, Audio, Audiobook, Book, Photo, and Mixed rows. This is on by default and can be turned off in the library settings panel.
- Merge Recent Rows by Type folds your per-library Recently Added and Recently Released rows into one row per type, deduplicated and sorted by date. It's off by default.
- A Playlist Order sort for the playlist and collection home rows, so curated order is honored instead of being re-sorted alphabetically.
- Press Back to return to the top of a scrolled home screen, library grid, favorites list, or Seerr Discover, instead of leaving the screen. A second press exits as before.
- Trailer captions on the media bar, showing YouTube caption tracks on trailer previews, preferring human-written tracks over automatic ones and matching your interface language.
Bug Fixes
Seerr
- Search results are requestable again. Opening a Seerr result from search landed on the library detail screen, which showed a Play button and other controls that did nothing because your server doesn't have the title. Search now goes through the same path as Discover and Browse.
- Browse keeps your filters and your place. Setting filters, scrolling, opening a title, and pressing Back used to dump you at the top of the grid with your filters cleared. It now returns to the same filters, the same scroll position, and the same card focused.
- Fixed the Seerr screens when the navigation bar is on top. The requests button no longer overlaps the clock, the requests list scrolls as you move down it, the browse, collection, and person screens fill the display, and you can move back down out of the navigation bar from the requests list.
- Fixed Seerr messages appearing in English for everyone on a translated interface. The strings had been renamed from Jellyseerr to Seerr in the code but not in the language files, so every lookup missed.
- External row items open something now. Titles from plugin custom rows and the Radarr and Sonarr calendars that only carry an IMDb id used to do nothing when selected. They now resolve through Seerr, and a title your server already has swaps to the real library item so it plays instead of showing a request page.
Playback
- The LG screensaver no longer interrupts playback. The guard that tells the TV to stay awake was checking for an API the app never actually loads, so on every webOS device it quietly gave up before registering. It now goes through the app's own service bridge.
- Autoplay Next Episode is honored again. The next episode started regardless of the setting, whether you turned it off on the TV or in the server plugin. Reported on Tizen, but webOS had the same bug.
- Play on a series or season starts the right episode. It used to always take Next Up and start from zero. It now targets the episode you're actually part way through and resumes where you left off, skipping episodes your server doesn't have.
- Dolby Vision files direct play on HDR10 Samsung sets instead of transcoding. The device profile only advertised Dolby Vision on true DV panels, but the server reports a bare Dolby Vision range when it can't tell which base layer a file uses, and these TVs play the HEVC base layer fine.
Interface
- Series thumbnails work on classic rows. The Display Series Thumbnails switch was only read on wide rows, so episode cards on classic rows ignored it entirely.
- The home backdrop updates again with classic rows when the row overlay is turned off, where nothing was feeding it a focused item.
- The media bar logo starts below the top navigation bar instead of drawing underneath it.
- The same title held on two servers or in two libraries now shows once, keeping the copy that has your watch progress. This covers search, Continue Watching, Next Up, Random, and Favorites, and duplicates no longer eat search result slots.
- Changing the interface language sticks. The setting was pushed to the server on a delay, and the reload happened first, so the next sync handed the old language back.
- Resetting a customization profile now resets your device too. It deleted the profile on the server but left every setting on the TV untouched. There's also a new Reset Ratings option in the ratings settings.
Note
A few defaults changed in this release. Playlist libraries group by type by default, and the collections and playlists home rows now sort by Playlist Order instead of alphabetically. You can change both in settings.
