0.7.2
Summary
WriteIDE 0.7.2 adds CSV and Excel trackers, current-stats export, saved chapter preparation and comparison, project typography and Focus preferences, Character History review, book ordering, and clearer editor surfaces. Full write-up: https://writeide.com/blog/whats-new-in-0-7-2
New
- Optional typewriter centering: use the existing Focus menu to keep your typing line near the middle of the manuscript area. The choice is remembered per project on this computer and works in scene and chapter editing.
- Project manuscript typography: keep a project’s own editor font, size and line spacing, or follow the default for all projects. Choose the scope in Settings → Appearance or Editor and save. This changes the writing surface on this computer without changing exported formatting.
- Project Focus preference: Focus Mode remembers each project's choice on this computer across scenes, chapters and reopen. Use Escape or the Exit control to return to the full writing layout and remember that choice. Other projects keep their own setting.
- Book ordering: use Move earlier / Move later in a book's manuscript menu to change its position within the project while keeping the selected scene open. Scene-specific character stats and recent changes refresh for the new story order; saved prose stays intact.
- Prepared chapters: choose a saved Version and chapter in Version History to preserve its Markdown, then verify, copy or reveal that same file after later draft edits or a restart. Compare with the latest saved draft to check whether its Markdown still matches, inspect highlighted changes for small chapters, and refresh after editing. Supported prose, lists, simple tables, self-contained system messages and ordinary saved stat blocks use the captured Version state; linked quests, images and other unsupported content are refused explicitly. Prepared files stay on this computer and do not travel with ordinary project backups. Share only the chapter Markdown; its recovery bundle contains private project data.
- Scenes to review: inspect recorded numeric, text, tier and boolean base values at a block’s stored boundary and at review time, with Different, Unchanged or Unavailable results and supporting scene links. Inspection keeps the alert open; opening the affected scene marks it reviewed. Both comparisons use the stored scene in the current outline. Calculated totals, resource-current values and prose remain outside this comparison.
- History scene navigation: use Open scene beside a linked group in a character's Stats or Timeline history, including Needs review, to continue in its current manuscript scene. Scene links follow renames and moves within the project. Unlinked changes stay readable, and historical Reader views keep author navigation hidden.
- Progression scene navigation: in a character's Timeline, select a graph point or choose a Story position, then use Open scene to continue in the editor. Values describe that story position and may carry forward from earlier changes or include edits made outside a scene. Unavailable or changed scene targets leave your current view unchanged; historical Reader views keep the author-only chart hidden.
- Character History review: switch between All changes and Needs review, then expand an event to inspect its recorded values, reason, and explanation. Checks use typed numeric base changes, unambiguous current stat bounds, and tentative decrease hints for author review. Current bounds may differ from those at the event. Story-position limits apply before checks and counts; this is a limited review aid, not a complete continuity assessment.
- Whole-chapter Focus Mode: hide surrounding workspace controls while writing in Scrivenings, using the existing Focus menu, keyboard shortcut, or command palette. Selecting the active chapter preserves Focus and your text selection; switching scenes or chapters keeps that project's Focus preference.
- New tracker from spreadsheet: name your tracker, then choose a CSV or an Excel workbook with one populated visible worksheet, headers in row 1, and one character per row. Choose the character-name column, name and type each stat, skip unwanted columns or characters, and review the starting values before creating the tracker. Whole numbers, decimals, text, and true/false values are supported; empty stat cells stay unset. Excel imports use stored values, including hidden columns and hidden or filtered rows, without display formatting. Ordinary formula cells must be skipped before import; workbooks with array or data-table formulas require conversion to literal values first. Text such as
00123stays text, and unsupported numeric precision is refused. This flow creates a new tracker from current values; it does not merge into an existing project or reconstruct history. - Current stats CSV: save a table of current character base values from Settings → Export, including trackers with no scenes. Text, tiers, true/false values and resolved calculated values are included; missing values stay blank and unresolved formulas are reported. Percentage columns contain percentage points. Equipment bonuses, remaining resources, history and stat definitions are outside this table; use a project backup for a complete copy. Spreadsheet-like formula text is protected with an apostrophe, and codes with leading zeros should be opened as Text in spreadsheet software.
- Spreadsheet Bridge for existing projects: import a WriteIDE stat workbook or a CSV in WriteIDE's stats/history format in Settings → Export. Review proposed characters, attributes, story positions, and stat changes before confirming. Export a workbook of WriteIDE's tracked stats and history for use in a spreadsheet; reimporting an unchanged WriteIDE workbook does not duplicate its recorded data. Existing-project imports still require the WriteIDE format. The point-in-time workbook exporter requires scenes; Current stats CSV provides a separate table for scene-free trackers.
- World → Rarity Sets: edit project rarity tiers and import or export a rarity set alongside your worldbuilding. The existing name-based merge preserves item references and never deletes tiers. A reusable rarity-template library remains future work.
Fixed
- Newly loaded demos use their own stats walkthrough instead of inheriting an existing project's writing, import or tracker checklist. Existing project progress is preserved.
- Canon character facts show Yes/No for stored true/false stats and legacy boolean values, matching the character sheet.
- Excel imports accept supported numbers saved in Excel’s longer numeric notation while retaining formula and unsafe-number checks.
- Paper stat previews keep dark manuscript ink in both themes; provenance no longer covers modal controls, and preset-name placeholders remain readable while focused. Ordinary code blocks also retain readable manuscript ink in both themes, including indented text and long wrapped lines.
- Editor dialogs: Edit Stats keeps its heading, explanation, shortcuts and validation readable after inserting a Field List stat block. Its save hint says Ctrl/Cmd+Enter to describe the existing Windows and Mac shortcuts. The system-message builder, selected-field count and preset Save label use theme-aware colors in Nightjade and Ink & Moss.
- Backup status keeps snapshot, manuscript and portable-package outcomes separate for the open project. A successful export cannot hide a failed snapshot; pending backups retain their original project when writing packages or applying retention. Snapshot file time is labeled separately from a restore check.
- Saved chapter counts refresh current scene, chapter and project totals immediately after saving a whole chapter, while preserving prose, selection and undo behavior.
- Blank-writing guidance completes after saving prose in scene or chapter view. Characters and stats are optional; chapter guidance advances only when prose changes. Help explains reopening the draft and optional Version History restore points.
- Chapter saves retain their original project when a pending paste finishes after switching manuscripts.
- Creating a manuscript accepts one pending submission and protects the form while creation and opening finish. If the project was saved but cannot open, retry from its library card without creating a duplicate. A failed creation keeps the entered form available for retry.
- Loading the demo retains its prewritten manuscript and example versions without crediting that content toward today's writing goal. Later author edits continue to count their word changes.
- Tracker manuscript import reviews usable single-chapter and headingless manuscripts instead of sending them to an empty chapter skeleton. The voluntary skeleton path and import cancellation cleanup remain available.
- Equipping or unequipping from Current inventory records the change at the latest story scene, preserving earlier equipment history. Explicit scene choices in commands remain available, and historical loadouts describe their read-only behavior.
- Item History shows recorded quantities for each holder after a partial transfer. Past character views retain their scene limit in the item dialog, include whole-item inventory quantities, and keep item details read-only; catalog names and descriptions are labeled as current. Incomplete historical quantities remain explicitly unknown.
- Item History shows each recorded trade once, with both character names and the transferred quantity. Distinct trades remain separate events.
- Applying a rarity preset remaps items from their current rarity and updates the set atomically. A failed replacement leaves the previous tiers and item assignments intact.
- Trade selections keep the item name visible beside a compact quantity field. Item History uses readable text and note surfaces in paper dossiers and themed dialogs.
- History review preserves story order and typed text such as
00123. Resource-current changes stay separate from base-stat checks, and recovery is not compared against a historical maximum. - Character summaries and hovercards preserve tier names, text, and Yes/No values instead of showing the bonus pipeline's numeric placeholder. Numeric totals and resources keep their existing formatting.
- Trackers with no scenes show current stats in Story Overview. Character cards recognize imported Level stats and no longer invent Level 1 when no progression stat is recorded. A selected story position continues to use its historical values.
- Characters imported without a named stat template display Custom, while their recorded stat values and Canon links remain intact.
- Custom HTML
{{class}}shows the character's class at the stat block's recorded story point and time, instead of an internal stat-system ID. Unassigned or removed classes render empty. - Interrupted spreadsheet exports explain which partial file needs attention, let you reveal it, and preserve it until you move or remove it before retrying.
- The sidebar uses consistent line icons and clearer labels for Write, Plan, World, Review, and Publish, with the same workspace order and keyboard navigation.
- Rarity set JSON imports apply the entire merge or leave the project unchanged if a tier fails. Existing item references and unmatched tiers are preserved. Ambiguous existing tier names must be renamed before import; an empty imported description clears the previous description.
Release safety
- Mac release-proof signatures are normalized to canonical DER automatically before verification and upload. Signed application content is unchanged by that conversion.
- Spreadsheet imports continue through WriteIDE's project-scoped domain writers and temporal history. A spreadsheet does not become a second source of truth.
Linked DOCX write-back and returned-PDF review remain disabled while their separate acceptance work continues. Existing manuscript import and export remain available.
WriteIDE remains free, local-first, and account-free. AI features remain disabled.
