Windows x64 beta: setup EXE and portable ZIP

Timestamp Cleaner repairs burned-in camera timestamps in local family videos. This beta adds a free NSIS setup EXE alongside the portable ZIP. Both contain the same application payload, and both remain unsigned early-beta builds.

Choose your download

  • Setup EXE: verify its SHA-256 against SHA256SUMS.txt, then run it. Installation is per user, with a Start shortcut and an uninstall entry; no administrator prompt is requested. Each version installs separately. Remove older versions through Settings > Apps after testing the new one.
  • Portable ZIP: verify its SHA-256, extract the entire ZIP and run timestamp-cleaner.exe. Keep its notices and metadata together.
  • External prerequisites: Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable (x64), FFmpeg and FFprobe. Setup does not download prerequisites. The application offers FFmpeg installation through WinGet with consent.

See the setup and recovery guide, media-tool recovery and the included START-HERE.md. No Rust compiler or Visual Studio is needed to run the app.

What changed

  • Fixed versioned per-user installation, version-specific shortcuts/registration, same-version collision rejection and exact-file uninstall preserving user-added files.
  • Setup builds from the verified ZIP, adds NSIS notices and source-ZIP provenance, and receives a shared release checksum.
  • Release-aware setup download on the website, with ZIP retained as an alternative.
  • Corrected release history and download documentation; added FAQ, update/uninstall/recovery guidance, installer trust boundaries and manual verification scenarios.
  • No external Rust dependency upgrades or repair-algorithm changes. Published beta.1 remains unchanged.

Verified scope

On 2026-10-11, the tagged release workflow passed on source commit 4c6f142d5131044ede4feafd524fdddb923dd23f. Its Windows job compiles setup and verifies silent installation, installed payload hashes, fixed destination, same-version collision and relocated-uninstaller refusal, uninstall cleanup and preservation of added files. Windows/Linux source, media, MSRV, audit, license/source and secret checks also gate release creation.

Automated installer checks run on a developer-equipped disposable runner. They do not establish clean-host runtime compatibility or interactive GUI behavior. Independent review found no Required or Critical issues. Both downloaded packages match their release SHA-256 values; all 271 ZIP payload hashes and the exact version/source metadata were verified before publication. Setup version resources identify 0.1.0-beta.2.

Known limitations

  • Interactive setup/application smoke testing, accessibility/high-DPI, clean-machine installation and dependency recovery remain unverified. Clean-host verification was explicitly deferred to beta testing.
  • Application and setup are unsigned; checksums detect changed bytes but do not authenticate the publisher. Do not disable Windows security protections.
  • Setup is not transactional. A failure may leave a partial version folder; follow documented recovery. Updates are manual and side by side, with no automatic removal of old versions.
  • Setup embeds the project icon. The application's own Windows PE icon and full native appearance checks remain open.
  • Artifact-specific dependency/font/NSIS notice review remains outstanding; automated copying is not licensing clearance.
  • Repair uses FFmpeg rectangle interpolation. It does not recover the original hidden pixels or implement Python algorithm parity, brush masks or batch processing.
  • Rotated/HDR/alpha/non-square-pixel inputs are unsupported. Additional video/subtitle/data streams are omitted, and exported metadata can retain identifying information. Keep originals and inspect exported picture/audio.

Report problems in Issues with version, OS/tool versions and redacted errors. Use synthetic examples rather than family footage. This release is a prerelease, not a production-ready or stable release.

Windows x64 portable beta

This is an early public beta for testing, not a production-ready release. The executable is unsigned. Exact-package desktop testing and clean-machine installation/dependency recovery are unverified; please report results and problems through GitHub Issues.

Package

Download timestamp-cleaner-0.1.0-beta.1-windows-x64.zip and SHA256SUMS.txt, verify the checksum, then extract the entire ZIP. Read START-HERE.md before launching.

  • Source tag: v0.1.0-beta.1, commit 0af63f45fcea6519dad65cf9b833a18ec7534d72.
  • Windows x64; Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable (x64) is an external prerequisite. The guide links Microsoft's official setup instructions.
  • FFmpeg/FFprobe remain external; the application offers consent-based WinGet installation when needed.
  • SHA-256: b3a966d6ccc2e88439e1afe61afe42f65ac49d20f8e128a2402c5bf8c158e4d1.

Verified

The tagged workflow passed source/version validation, all seven quality gates and draft creation:
https://github.com/MrQuality/timestamp-cleaner/actions/runs/38084184191

The actual release ZIP was downloaded and independently checked: 4,049,208 bytes, all 270 payload hashes valid, 141 dependency notice sets, and matching tagged version/commit/lock metadata. Static PE inspection confirms the documented VCRUNTIME140.dll dependency. These checks do not establish native GUI behavior or artifact licensing clearance.

Maintainer desktop test

  1. Launch the extracted executable on the available Windows PC; record Windows version and whether startup/tool detection succeeds.
  2. Open a short video from a path containing spaces/non-ASCII characters, select the timestamp area and compare original/repaired previews.
  3. Export MKV and MP4; play both and confirm the expected picture and audio.
  4. Cancel an open/save dialog and an active operation; check existing output protection and cleanup.

Record pass/fail and any error for each item, plus FFmpeg/FFprobe versions. Earlier MKV/MP4 smoke passes remain documented; this round verifies the actual beta package.

Known limits and remaining work

  • Clean-machine installation and dependency recovery are unverified. The owner deferred them to beta testing; they remain production-readiness gates.
  • Executable icon/version resources and artifact-specific third-party notice review remain outstanding. Included notice files and automated license checks do not establish a completed artifact-specific review. The runtime window icon is present.
  • Repair uses FFmpeg rectangle interpolation; original Python Telea/Navier-Stokes parity, brush masks and batch processing are future work.
  • Input restrictions and stream-preservation limits are documented in the README. Rotated/HDR/alpha/non-square-pixel inputs are outside current supported scope.
  • ZIP updates are manual. No installer, signing or automatic updater is included.

Published as an early beta at the maintainer's request, with the outstanding verification and review items disclosed above. Later executable changes require a new beta version and tag; this tag and its verified package will not be replaced silently.
