Multron Win Cleaner 1.26.5 Update

Warning

Antivirus false positives: some antivirus programs may flag Multron Win Cleaner or one of its DLL files as suspicious when you download or run it. In particular, Bitdefender and engines that use it (for example Emsisoft, eScan, GData, Arcabit, VIPRE) may detect MultronWinCleaner.dll heuristically as ransomware, with a name such as Gen:Heur.Ransom.Imps.3. This is a false positive: a heuristic detection is based on behavior, not on a known malware signature, and it is triggered by what a system cleaner has to do (closing programs, deleting files, changing Windows settings). Multron Win Cleaner does not encrypt files, does not ask for a ransom and does not send your data anywhere except the optional cloud malware scan. The file has been reported to Bitdefender as a false positive again. The full source code is in this repository, and every release is built automatically by GitHub Actions. If your antivirus blocks the app, you can report the file to its vendor as a false positive or add an exception for the app folder.

Test release: the cloud malware scan is published for testing. It is released so it can be tried thoroughly and made stable, so results and behavior may still change. Please report false detections, missed threats or any problems in Issues.

New: Signed database updates

The cleaning database is now signed too, the same way app updates are signed since 1.26.4. The database decides which files are cleaned, so only a database published by the Multron Win Cleaner team is used.

  • Every database release has an update.json with its version and the SHA-256 of database.txt, signed with the database release key (update.json.sig). The public key is built into the app; it is a separate key from the one that signs app updates.
  • The downloaded database.txt must match its signed SHA-256 before it replaces the current database. A changed file is refused and the current database stays in use.
  • The signed version must match the database release and be newer than the installed database, so an older database cannot be pushed as an update.
  • Database updates are only accepted from the official GitHub releases.
  • Database releases are checked without any secrets and signed in a separate, protected step, with a GitHub build attestation.

You can check a database download yourself with node scripts/verify-update.js update.json update.json.sig database.txt from the database repository.

Changes

  • A database update that is refused because it is older than the installed one now says so clearly.

Updating

  • From 1.26.4 or earlier: the app updates itself to 1.26.5 as usual (Settings > App Updates). App updates are checked against their signature since 1.26.4, and database updates from this version on.
  • New installs: download mwc_setup.exe (installer) or mwc.zip (portable) below.

For signed app updates see the v1.26.4 release, and for the full list of what is new in 1.26 the v1.26.3 release, the v1.26.2 release, the v1.26.1 release and the v1.26 release.

Multron Win Cleaner 1.26.4 Update

New: Signed updates

App updates are now signed, so only updates published by the Multron Win Cleaner team can be installed.

  • Every release has an update.json that lists the SHA-256 of each file and is signed with the Multron Win Cleaner release key (update.json.sig). The public key is built into the app.
  • The downloaded update must match its signed SHA-256 before it is unpacked. A file that was changed on GitHub without the private key is refused.
  • The signed version must match the release and be newer than the installed version, so an older version cannot be pushed as an update.
  • Updates are only accepted from the official GitHub releases.
  • Releases are built without any secrets and signed in a separate, protected step that signs exactly what was built. Every file also has a GitHub build attestation that shows which workflow run and commit built it.

You can check any download yourself with node scripts/verify-update.mjs update.json update.json.sig mwc.zip from the repository, or gh attestation verify mwc.zip --repo Multron-Community/MultronWcleaner.

Changes

  • Multron Win Cleaner and its database moved to the Multron Community organization on GitHub. The app now checks for updates and database updates there; older versions keep working through GitHub's redirect.

Updating

  • From 1.26.3 or earlier: the app updates itself to 1.26.4 as usual (Settings > App Updates). Every update after 1.26.4 is checked against the signature.
  • New installs: download mwc_setup.exe (installer) or mwc.zip (portable) below.

New: Microsoft MRT scan

The Malware Scan group on the main screen has a new Microsoft MRT Scan option. It scans with the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MRT.exe) that Windows Update installs on every PC.

  • On by default with a Quick Scan. Choose Full Scan to check every fixed drive (this can take hours).
  • MRT runs hidden, without its own window. Its progress is shown on the main progress ring and in the malware result panel, and the Clean button turns into Cancel while it runs.
  • When Multron Malware Scan Cloud (Testing) is also selected, MRT runs first and the cloud scan follows. The findings of both are listed together in the malware result panel, and every row says which scanner found it: Microsoft MRT or Multron Cloud.
  • MRT first only reports what it finds. MRT Results shows the findings with the full report of that scan from mrt.log, and Remove with MRT scans again and lets MRT remove the malicious software. Tick Remove found malicious software right away if MRT should clean during the scan.
  • MRT works without internet, so it is also available in offline mode.
  • If MRT.exe is missing, the option is hidden and the group explains that Windows Update installs it.

New: Simplified interface

The cleaning list is now easier to read, similar to other well-known cleaners. The simplified interface is the default:

  • One list for all users instead of a group per user, split into Windows and Applications (applications in alphabetical order).
  • Plain item names such as Local Temp instead of LocalTemp=C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp. The paths are in the tooltip, and right-click opens the location or copies the paths.
  • Every group has a checkbox that selects or unselects the whole group and shows how many items are selected.
  • The cleanmgr, DISM, SFC and Deep Log Files Scan commands and the extra scans have easy names (for example Check and repair Windows system files instead of sfc.exe=sfc /scannow=...) and are gathered under Extra Scans & Tools at the top of the list.

Prefer the detailed view? Choose Advanced in Settings > Interface Mode. It has the same look, but shows everything in detail: a group per user, every item on its own row with its full path, the raw commands and every database button. The cleaning list reloads when you switch.

Changes

  • The cloud malware scan option on the main screen is now called Multron Malware Scan Cloud (Testing).
  • The app builds without any compiler warnings, and unused code was removed.
  • Security Check warnings can be ignored: click Ignore on a warning and it is no longer shown or reported. Show Ignored Warnings in Utilities > Security Check brings them back.
  • In offline mode, the "database has not been updated" warning now appears after one day instead of after the update interval.

Fixes

  • The security check no longer shows Windows Security warnings (Microsoft Defender turned off, Security Center or Windows Security service disabled) when another antivirus is installed. Antivirus programs with "Defender" in their name, such as Bitdefender, were mistaken for Microsoft Defender, and antivirus programs were not found at all while the Security Center service was off. When no antivirus is turned on at all, the check still warns.
  • The tray icon kept showing the "database has not been updated" warning after offline mode was turned off and the database was checked for updates. It now goes back to the normal icon as soon as the warning no longer applies.

Cloud malware scan: license agreement

The cloud malware scan agreement was updated. Read the full agreement here: MALWARE_SCAN_EULA.md. The app shows it before your next cloud scan and asks you to accept the current version.

Fixes

  • The cloud malware scan agreement text can no longer be out of date in an installed build: it is always the version published in this repository.

Multron Win Cleaner 1.26.1 Update

Malware scan: removal progress

  • Detailed progress while threats are removed: Remove All Threats, Remove Selected, Delete File, Quarantine and the removal at the end of a clean now open a progress window instead of only showing a wait cursor.
  • It shows which file is being handled (for example 2 / 5), a progress bar, and the step that is running right now: looking for programs started from the file, deleting, removing read-only attributes, closing programs that lock the file, taking ownership, renaming, or scheduling deletion at the next restart.
  • Counters for Removed / Quarantined, At Restart, Failed and the elapsed time, and a Details list with every step and the result of each file in color.
  • Stop ends the removal after the current file; files that were already removed stay removed.
  • Copy Details copies the list, and Open Log opens the log of the removal.
  • When some files can only be deleted at the next restart, the window says so.

Malware scan: logs

  • Every scan writes a log: scan type, where it was started from, the scan settings, how many files were found, connection drops and reconnects, every threat and suspicious file (with threat name, SHA-256 and size), files that could not be checked or were skipped, and a summary with the counts and the duration. A stopped or failed scan is logged too.
  • Removals, quarantine actions, restores from quarantine and rescans are added to the log of the scan they belong to, step by step.
  • Scan Logs (new window): the new Scan Logs button in the Malware Scan window lists the logs with their date, type and result and shows the selected log next to the list. Logs can be opened in Notepad, copied, deleted one by one or all at once, and the logs folder can be opened.
  • Logs are kept in the Logs\MalwareScan folder of the app, and only the latest 100 are kept.

Malware scan: quarantine in its own window

  • Select all and quarantine all: a checkbox in the header of the results list checks or unchecks every file in the list. The new Quarantine All / Quarantine Selected button next to Remove All Threats moves the checked files to quarantine, or every threat in the list when nothing is checked, with the same progress window as removal.
  • The quarantine list moved out of the Malware Scan window into its own Quarantine window, so the Malware Scan window stays tidy. It can restore or delete files one by one, delete all of them, and open the quarantine folder.
  • Compressed and encrypted quarantine: quarantined files are now compressed and then encrypted with AES-256 (each file with its own random key). An encrypted file cannot run and is not detected again by antivirus programs, and it takes much less space. The Quarantine window shows each file's original and stored size. Before a file is restored, it is decrypted and checked against the SHA-256 saved when it was quarantined, so a damaged file is never written back. Files that were already in quarantine are compressed and encrypted automatically the next time the app starts.
  • Export: quarantined files can be exported one by one or all at once to a ZIP protected with the password infected (the usual password for malware samples), together with a text file that lists each file's original path, threat, SHA-256 and date, for example to send them to an antivirus vendor. Scan logs can be exported one by one as a text file or all at once as a ZIP.

Main window status

  • Tool progress on the main screen: while a malware scan, Duplicate File Finder, Large File Finder, Firewall Rule Cleaner, Shortcut Fixer or Security Check runs from its own window, the status text under the big button on the main screen shows what it is doing (for example the number of files checked and threats found), and the ring shows the progress when the tool reports it. When the tool finishes, its result stays there. A scan or clean started on the main screen always has priority.
  • Smoother spinner: the spinning ring around the shield in the malware scan and removal windows now turns exactly around the shield instead of wobbling.

Tougher threat removal (Force Delete)

  • Locked and protected threats are removed with SYSTEM privileges: for any threat or stubborn file that cannot be deleted or quarantined the normal way, Multron Win Cleaner now escalates step by step — closing the programs that lock it, taking ownership, resetting permissions and, as a last resort, deleting or moving it as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM using Sysinternals PsExec. This applies to every detection, not to any one program.
  • PsExec is now built into the app: PsExec64.exe is embedded in Multron Win Cleaner and extracted automatically when it is needed, so the feature works on any machine without a separate download or setup. Each removal step is shown in the removal progress window.
  • Remove at next restart: when a threat still cannot be removed while Windows is running, it is now registered to be deleted (or moved to quarantine) at the next restart — tried several ways (standard Windows API, direct registry, and with SYSTEM privileges) and verified. The file is then removed very early during the next boot, before background programs start, which clears many files that are locked or in use.
  • Clearer reasons when a threat cannot be removed: the steps now show exactly why a SYSTEM removal failed (for example PsExec could not start, or access was denied). Some security programs actively protect their own files and block deletion, renaming and even scheduling at restart, even for SYSTEM; in that case the app says so and explains that the protecting program's self-protection must be turned off, or the file removed in Windows Safe Mode.
  • PsExec is a Microsoft Sysinternals tool; its license is included as PSEXEC-EULA.md and linked from the README.

Fixes

  • A new scan, a rescan or Clear List can no longer start while threats are being removed, which could mix up the results list.
  • Several Malware Scan and quarantine texts that were shown in English are now translated into all 12 languages.

For everything else that is new in 1.26, see the v1.26 release.

Multron Win Cleaner 1.26 Update

Languages

  • The whole app is translated into 12 languages: English, Turkish, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
  • The language can be changed in Settings; the app restarts to apply it.

Malware scan

Test release: the cloud malware scan is published for testing. It is released so it can be tried thoroughly and made stable, so results and behavior may still change. Please report false detections, missed threats or any problems in Issues.

  • Cloud engine: files are checked by the viruskov.com OPEN-EDR engine over an encrypted TLS connection. The Malware Scan window now also shows that the scan servers run on a VDS hosted by Türkbil.
  • License agreement: shown once before the first cloud scan. It explains which files are sent; with the "Only executables & scripts" filter on (the default), personal files are never uploaded.
  • Quarantine: detected files can be moved to a quarantine folder, restored to their original place or deleted, one by one or all at once.
  • Asks before removing threats: when a clean finds malicious files from the last malware scan, it lists them and asks before deleting them. Automatic and startup cleans never delete them; they stay in the Malware Scan window for you to review.
  • Removed items stay in the list: a file you quarantine or delete is no longer dropped from the results; its row changes to "Deleted by user" or "Quarantined by user" with the time, so you keep a history. Double-click a row, or use "Show Details", to see the file, threat, SHA-256 and the steps taken.
  • Remove All Threats: one button deletes every remaining threat at once, after showing the list and asking. Files in a Windows or program folder are marked with a warning in that list.
  • Force-closes the threat: deleting or quarantining a file now force-closes any program started from that exact file (and the programs it started), while never touching Windows system processes or a program with merely the same name.
  • Nothing is skipped: threats in the Windows folder or Program Files are no longer skipped during a clean — once you confirm, they are removed like any other, with ownership taken when needed.
  • Encrypted connection only: the developer server address accepts unencrypted ws:// only for a server on the same PC (localhost); other servers need wss://.
  • Tray icon: a shield in the system tray shows when a scan is running and tells you when it finishes.
  • Possibly clean: a new result for files that are almost identical to a verified clean file.
  • Rescan: right-click a result and choose Rescan to check the file again without the server's saved verdict, for example after new rules or for a "possibly clean" file. A rescan can be stopped with the Stop button.
  • Faster uploads: files are compressed before upload when that makes them at least 10% smaller.
  • Folder paths, without your user name: the license agreement now explains that file names and their folder paths are sent to help find where malware hides. Your user folders are replaced by placeholders such as %USERPROFILE%\Downloads, so no Windows user name is sent.
  • Survives connection drops: if the connection to the scan server is lost, for example while the server restarts, the scan waits and reconnects by itself instead of failing. It tries one connection at a time with growing pauses (2 to 30 seconds), tries each file up to 3 times, and stops with an error only after 4 minutes without the server or when the server refuses the connection.

Right-click menu (new, optional)

  • Settings > Right-Click Menu adds Scan with Multron Malware Scan to the File Explorer right-click menu for files, folders and drives.
  • To scan several items at once, select them and use Send To > Multron Malware Scan. They are scanned together with a single UAC prompt.
  • If the app is already running, also in the background, the items are handed to it and scanned there.
  • On Windows 11 these entries are under "Show more options". The optional Use the classic right-click menu in Windows 11 setting shows them in the first menu, like in Windows 10. It changes the menu for every program and needs File Explorer to restart.
  • The scan respects the "Only executables & scripts" filter, as promised in the license agreement.

Notifications after a background scan

  • After an automatic or startup scan, notifications now also report insecure Windows settings (any risk level, not only high), broken firewall rules, duplicate files and malware scan results. Each has a button that opens the details.
  • Notifications about problems use a red warning sign instead of the blue check mark.
  • Settings > Startup & Notify Settings: each kind of notification can be turned on or off (all on by default), and you can choose the corner (bottom right by default) and whether notifications are lined up or stacked on top of each other.
  • Several notifications no longer cover each other.
  • "Notify me after a background scan / cleanup finishes" are now on by default.

Theme

  • The app opens in dark mode when Windows uses dark mode, otherwise in light mode, and switches along with Windows while it runs.
  • Changing the theme by hand keeps your choice. Settings > Theme > Match the Windows theme turns automatic mode back on.

Look & feel

  • Transparency effects (new, optional): windows are slightly see-through with a colored tint. Settings > Theme lets you turn them off, pick the color (blue, green, orange, purple, red, pink, teal or gray) and the strength (light, medium or strong). On by default with blue at medium strength.
  • Search on the main screen: a small search box next to the buttons filters the cleaning list by app name or file path (also matches paths like %TEMP%). Clearing it shows everything again.
  • New message windows: all messages, warnings and questions now use the app's own dialog instead of the plain Windows message box. It matches the theme, dims the window it belongs to and shows an icon that fits the message (error, warning, question or information). Esc closes it and Ctrl+C copies its text.
  • Scroll bars look the same in every window: thin and rounded, like on the main screen.
  • Windows always fit the screen: a window never opens larger than the screen (without the taskbar) and is moved back if it would stick out, also on smaller or scaled screens and on the monitor it opens on.
  • Same search box everywhere: Duplicate File Finder and Startup Manager now use the rounded search box of the main screen, with a hint text, a ✕ button and Esc to clear it. Startup Manager also searches the program path.
  • Colored message icons: the icons in message windows (information, question, warning, error) are drawn in color and no longer look black in dark mode. The warning icons in Startup Manager and in the new startup item window were changed the same way.
  • Section icons: System & Global Tools on the main screen shows a globe instead of a laptop, and user sections show a person icon in the same thin style. Both follow the text color in light and dark mode.

Only one copy runs

  • No second copy: starting Multron Win Cleaner while it already runs, also hidden in the tray, no longer opens a second copy. The running app shows its main window and brings it to the front instead.
  • Right-click scans go to the running app: Scan with Multron Malware Scan hands the files to the running app, which opens the Malware Scan window in front and starts scanning right away.
  • Never hidden without a way back: a copy started with Windows closes itself and removes itself from Windows startup when both tray icons (main and Utilities) are turned off, because it could not be reached. Turning on "Start Multron Win Cleaner when I sign in to Windows" (or a startup scan or clean) now also turns on the tray icon when neither tray icon is on.

Settings

  • New title bar buttons: reset to defaults (asks first), minimize, maximize/restore and close. The Settings window can now also be resized.
  • Settings are saved automatically as soon as you change them. The Save Settings buttons in Settings and in the Malware Scan window were removed.
  • Windows startup is now a checkbox: "Start Multron Win Cleaner when I sign in to Windows" replaces the Add to Startup / Remove from Startup buttons and always shows whether the app is in startup. Turning on the startup scan or cleanup offers to turn it on for you.
  • Automatic updates: the app and the cleaning database can check for updates in the background. The database check interval, automatic loading of a downloaded database, the update status and the Update Database button on the main screen can each be set in Settings.
  • App Updates (new, at the top of Settings): shows the installed version. Check for Updates looks for a newer version, Update to … installs it after asking, and Release Notes opens its page.

Updates and installer

  • No more Updater.exe: the app updates itself. It downloads the update, checks its size, swaps its own files and starts again. If something goes wrong while files are swapped, the old files are put back. Your settings, exclusions and selections are never overwritten. The old Updater.exe is removed automatically.
  • New installer (mwc_setup.exe): installs for the current user in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Multron Win Cleaner without asking for administrator rights, and updates an existing installation in place. The setup uses your Windows language, with no language question. Uninstalling also removes leftover update files.
  • Portable version (mwc.zip): the same files without installing.
  • Smaller app folder: the e...

What's new

  • Automatic cleaning works. The automatic cleaning settings never took effect before. Every X minutes, Daily, Weekly and Custom Days schedules, the allowed time range and the run conditions now work.
  • Choose weeks of the month. Custom Days has a new optional "Only in selected weeks of the month" setting, for example to clean only in the 1st and 3rd week.
  • Green status lines on the main window show when automatic cleaning or startup cleaning is on, when the next automatic run is, and why it is waiting (for example high CPU usage or the PC being in use).

Improvements

  • Killing locked files is much faster. Files that Windows does not let you delete are shown as "access denied" right away instead of being sent to the Locked Files list.
  • Automatic cleaning never interrupts a scan or clean you started yourself, and turning it on does not start a clean right away.
  • The Locked Files selection window closes automatically when you start Kill, so you can follow the progress.

Fixes

  • Fixed a crash while killing locked files.
  • The days ticked for Custom Days are kept after restarting the app.
  • "Automatically clean when the app starts" now works without also ticking "Automatically scan when the app starts".
  • The After cleaning action (Shutdown, Restart, Log Off) runs only after automatic or startup cleaning, not after a clean you start yourself.
  • "Device is plugged in and charging" was reversed, and "Battery is above 30%" stopped automatic cleaning on desktops without a battery. Both now work as described.
  • The cleaning notification follows its own setting, and notifications no longer appear when they are turned off.
  • Unticking a file in the scan results no longer adds a wrong line to Exceptions. Use the new "Always skip this file (add to Exceptions)" right-click option instead. Folders can now be added to Exceptions too.
  • Your cleanmgr.exe, Dism.exe, SFC and Deep Log Files Scan choices are remembered after restarting the app.
  • New Reset Selections button puts every choice back to its default.

Duplicate File Finder

  • Only real duplicates. Every duplicate is now checked byte by byte, so only files with exactly the same content are listed.
  • New side-by-side view shows each copy next to the original it was copied from, with an arrow between them. It is the default view; the folder view is one click away.
  • A file reached through a folder link is no longer listed as a copy of itself, and duplicates across different target folders are now found.
  • "Match media across different qualities" matched photos and videos by name only and could select a different file for deletion. It is now off by default, its results are marked SIMILAR and they are never selected automatically.
  • Before deleting, each file is compared again with the copy that is kept, and at least one copy is always kept.
  • New Duplicate Files option on the main screen (on by default). After a scan, duplicate files in your personal folders are found in the background and shown as a warning above the results. Show Files opens Duplicate File Finder. After automatic or startup scans, a notification appears in the bottom-right corner instead. Nothing is deleted automatically.
  • The duplicate search is now a step of the scan, like the malware scan. While it runs, the Clean button turns into Cancel, the progress is shown on the main screen, Show Status opens Duplicate File Finder to watch it and ✕ stops it.
  • More file types: 40 quick-select extensions instead of 8 (27 common ones, such as .mp3, .zip and .iso, are selected by default; .exe is not), and new Music, Documents, Archives and Programs presets. The Images and Videos presets include many more formats, such as .heic, camera RAW and .m2ts.

Large File Finder

  • More extensions in every category, and three new categories: Programs and Installers, Disk Images and VMs (.iso, .vhdx, .vmdk...) and Backups, Dumps and Logs (.bak, .dmp, .log...).

DISM, SFC and cleanmgr

  • No more command windows. DISM and SFC repairs run inside the app, with their progress and result shown in the cleaning list and the round progress bar.
  • DISM and SFC results at the top of the scan results: component store size and reclaimable space, component store health and system file integrity. Green means everything is fine. Each has a checkbox to choose whether it runs during cleaning.
  • The DISM and SFC results are read correctly on Turkish Windows, and the progress bar no longer freezes while sfc /verifyonly runs.
  • During automatic and startup cleaning, cleanmgr runs silently in the background.

New tools

  • Shortcut Fixer in Utilities and on the main screen finds Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts whose program no longer exists. Shortcuts to programs that moved to a new version folder are repaired, the others are moved to the Recycle Bin.
  • Shortcut Fixer has a Reset button, like Firewall Rule Cleaner.
  • The System Optimization card shows an Activity list with everything it did and when. Undo clears it.
  • While an optimization is on, it is applied again every time the app starts (paused services that Windows started again, settings that were changed back, DNS flush). After applying, the app offers to add itself to Windows startup so this also happens after every restart.
  • System Optimization now has two profiles. For old systems pauses only the services you select and Undo starts only those again. For new systems applies performance settings (power plan, Game Mode, game priority, faster menus and more), can turn on automatic memory cleaning permanently, flushes the DNS cache every time the app starts while it is on, and Undo restores your previous values.

Security Check (new)

  • New Security Check in Utilities and as a scan option on the main screen. It finds more than 50 Windows settings that make your PC less secure, for example UAC or Windows Firewall turned off, AutoPlay on for USB drives, Defender turned off by a policy or with whole drives excluded, SmartScreen off, SMB 1.0, Remote Desktop without protection, Windows Update disabled, the Guest account on, Task Manager blocked, backdoors on the sign-in screen and Office running all macros.
  • Each finding shows a risk level and an explanation. Tick the ones to fix and click Fix Selected. The previous values are saved first, so Undo Fixes can restore them.
  • After automatic or startup scans, a notification appears when high risk settings are found.

Main screen

  • Firewall Rules, Duplicate Files and Shortcuts results are green when nothing was found.
  • The option texts change color right away when switching between dark and light mode.

Scan and Clean

  • The Scan button now turns into Cancel as soon as the scan starts, so a running scan can be cancelled. Before, it stayed as Scan and clicking it again started a second scan.
  • While a scan or clean runs, the buttons of Duplicate File Finder, Firewall Rule Cleaner and Shortcut Fixer turn into Cancel, so you can stop the scan or clean from there too.
  • Cancel also works while the scan results are being loaded. Before, the button turned back into Scan too early, and clicking it started a second scan.
  • Firewall Rules, Shortcuts, Security Settings and Duplicate Files are now steps of the scan, like the malware scan. While each step runs, the Clean button turns into Cancel, the progress is shown on the main screen, Show Status opens the tool and ✕ skips the step.
  • Opening Duplicate File Finder during its search no longer shows the old results and a Clean button.
  • After Kill, the button no longer stays as Cancel, and Kill no longer stops at once after a cancelled clean.

What's new

  • See what is being cleaned. Each location shows Cleaning: name: path while it is cleaned, and the status bar shows the current item and how many files were deleted so far.
  • Details for every location. When a location is done, it shows how many files were deleted and how much space was freed, and how many files were locked.
  • Summary at the end. A summary line shows the total files deleted, space freed, locked files, skipped locations and how long cleaning took.

Improvements

  • Cleaning is much faster when there are many files to delete.
  • Scanning is faster, and a folder with one protected subfolder is no longer skipped completely.
  • The Locked Files list opens much faster and no longer keeps files from earlier cleanings.
  • Killing locked files never closes Windows system processes, and the result shows closed programs and deleted files separately.
  • Cancelling a clean now stops right away, even inside a large folder.

Fixes

  • Dism.exe component cleanup runs again. The Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup command was scanned but never run during cleaning. It now runs when it is ticked and frees the space the scan found in the WinSxS folder.
  • Dism.exe Restore Health runs when needed. When the scan finds component store corruption and Restore Health is ticked, it now runs during cleaning. Before, it was always skipped.
  • Dism.exe size on every Windows language. The WinSxS size showed 0 Byte on non-English Windows. It is now read correctly, and the analysis is no longer stopped after 1 minute.
  • The "not accessed for" scan filter now uses the number of days you pick. Before, it always used 7 days.
  • Locked files inside folders now appear in the Locked Files list.
  • An unticked single file is shown as Ignored instead of "Does not exist".

What's new

  • Faster startup. The cleaning list loads much faster and the window no longer freezes while it loads.
  • Stays fast as the list grows. Adding more cleaning locations no longer makes the app noticeably slower.
  • Automatic saving. Your choices are saved automatically as soon as you tick or untick a box. The Save Selections button is hidden while this is on. You can turn it off in Settings > Selections to save manually.
  • Instant saving. Save Selections now saves your choices instantly.
  • Your choices are kept after updates. When a new cleaning list is downloaded, your saved choices stay as they are.
  • All browser profiles are cleaned. If you use more than one profile in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or another browser, every profile is now included. You can turn this off in Settings > Browsers to pick one profile per browser instead.
  • New Write Selections to Database button. If you want, you can write your choices into the cleaning list itself. This is optional, and choices written this way are replaced the next time a new cleaning list is downloaded.

Improvements

  • The cleaning list is downloaded only when a newer one is available, so startup is quicker.
  • If a download is interrupted, your current cleaning list stays untouched and the download is tried again on the next start.
  • The app only updates itself to newer versions.
  • Settings and Utilities are now labeled blue buttons at the top of the window, so they are easy to find. Discord and GitHub also look clearly clickable.
  • Select All and Save Selections look cleaner on hover and stay readable in the light theme.

Fixes

  • Fixed the Utilities tray icon not appearing after it was turned off and on again.
  • The app icon now shows on the taskbar instead of a blank window icon.
  • Fixed a crash when scrolling to the bottom of the cleaning list.
  • Fixed wrong user folders being used when no user was selected in Settings.
  • A damaged line in the cleaning list no longer stops the whole list from loading.
  • Fixed browser profile options appearing for browsers with no profiles.
  • The browser profile list now shows only real profiles, and switching profiles correctly updates what gets cleaned.
  • Fixed choices in long categories not being saved for items further down the list.

Note

  • Your choices are now stored in selections.txt next to the app. Choices you saved with an older version are still in the cleaning list and keep working.

Portable Version: The portable version of the application is available as mwc.zip. Simply extract the archive and run the application directly—no installation is required.

    • The update check and the database download are also skipped.
    • The setting is saved as soon as you toggle it and applies the next time the app starts.
    • If database.txt is missing in offline mode, no error dialog is shown. The status panel says: "You are running in offline mode and the database could not be found."
