v3.0.0: The Big Redesign
What's new
A lot. Apologies in advance for anything I forget, because this is going to be one hell of a changelog 馃槄
macOS
General
- The update checking code has been improved, meaning that the build number no longer needs to be part of the GitHub release tag. This was a necessary change because the build number shouldn't be infinitely incremented; the number is meant to be reset to 1 each time that a new version enters development (also they never lined up with the iOS/watchOS build numbers anyway, so they were confusing).
- Replaced "Internet Settings" with "General" in the settings window.
- Toggles for generator animations have been removed from each mode's settings and are instead unified into one "Play animations in supported modes" toggle under General.
- As a result, dice and marble modes no longer have dedicated settings pages, as their only option was to enable animations.
- Number and coin modes now support SceneStorage, meaning that their values will be retained while the app is launched, even if you switch to a different mode.
- The sidebar has been redesigned to look less bad and also to incorporate an SF symbol representing each mode.
- The separate history window has been removed, and your generator history can instead be access using the sidebar.
- The history view now takes advantage of a real life macOS table instead of two lists glued together (thanks, macOS Monterey!).
- All modes have been entirely redesigned to have clearer controls and to occupy more of the window's space, so your numbers won't feel quite as lonely anymore.
- The generate and reset buttons have been enlarged across all modes and are no longer exclusively suitable for ants.
- All modes now have a dedicated generate button, because sometimes you don't want to have to touch the dice directly.
Number Mode
- The maximum and minimum text fields are now always exposed, because hiding them away seemed a bit silly when there was so much open space.
New Mode: Coin Mode
- You can finally flip a coin from the convenience of your RNGTool!
- Supports up to 100 coin flips in one go.
Dice Mode
- You can now roll up to 18 dice, because you need something for your fancy M4 Max to do.
Card Mode
- You can now roll up to 12 cards. I don't know if any card game has you draw specifically 12 cards, but I felt like this made better use of the screen space.
Marble Mode
- You can now roll up to 18 marbles, because they're the same size as dice so if my dice can do it then why can't my marbles.
- The entire space of the marble is now clickable. Previously you needed to hit either the outer circle or the letter, because the visual empty space inside of the marble wasn't actually part of the marble.
iOS (iPadOS too!)
General
- The title on the main menu now proudly proclaims "RNGTool" instead of "Home".
- The "Interface" settings category has been renamed to "General" and has been moved to the top of the settings screen.
- Toggles for generator animations have been removed from each mode's settings and are instead unified into one "Play animations in supported modes" toggle under General.
- As a result, dice and marble modes no longer have dedicated settings sections, as their only option was to enable animations.
- The "Credits" section of the About RNGTool page has been removed, as it was mostly unnecessary and contained credits not relevant to RNGTool.
- The copyright year now extends to the current year instead of just specifying 2022.
- I added a credit for myself at the bottom and there's nothing you can do about it.
- Advanced settings is now a proper settings page rather than a sheet, which resolves an issue on iPad where it would be dismissed at inopportune times.
- All modes have been entirely redesigned to have clearer controls and to occupy more of the screen space, so you can finally justify the cost of your M4 iPad Pro.
- Modes no longer inappropriately use scroll views, so you can't scroll through a page of nothingness anymore.
- The generate and reset buttons have been enlarged across all modes and no longer look like they're trying to hide from RNGTool's terrifying former design.
- All modes now have a dedicated generate button, because sometimes you don't want to have to handle the marbles if someone else has had their hands all over them. That's gross.
Number Mode
- The maximum and minimum text fields are now always exposed, because hiding them away seemed a bit silly when there was so much open space.
- There's now a super fancy animation that plays when you generate a number, though it's only supported on iOS 16+. Sorry iOS 15 users. iOS 17+ users get a slightly cooler animation that changes based on whether the new number was greater than or less than the previous one.
New Mode: Coin Mode
- You can finally flip a coin from the convenience of your RNGTool!
- Supports up to 50 coin flips in one go, with a charming haptic tap for each one.
Dice Mode
- The dice now wrap quite nicely, so you now only get 3 per row.
- As a result, I could fit 3 extra dice in! Wow! That's a total of 9!
- You can now shake your device to roll! This feature is sure to amaze your friends. (This feature can be disabled using the "Shake your device to generate in supported models" toggle in general settings.)
Card Mode
- The cards are now above the controls, because I felt like it was really weird that it was the only mode where the content was below the controls.
Marble Mode
- By using the same dark magic as dice mode, I've enabled wrapping and increased the maximum to 9 for marbles as well.
- The entire space of the marble is now tappable. Previously you needed to hit either the outer circle or the letter, because the visual empty space inside of the marble wasn't actually part of the marble. This might not have been a huge deal on iPhone, but on iPad you could manage to miss the actual marble.
- Also using the same dark magic as dice mode, device shaking! You can now shake your device to roll marbles. (This feature can also be disabled using the "Shake your device to generate in supported models" toggle in general settings.)
watchOS
General
- All input fields now use my new and improved custom keyboard, which allows for much easier input than trying to use the system keyboard to type numbers.
- Most settings-related changes from iOS apply here.
- Switched to the update method of showing alerts, which has an X in the corner and one button instead of two buttons you have to scroll through.
- Poor watchOS couldn't get quite the same redesign, but I still love it.
New Mode: Coin Mode
- Flip a coin, right from your wrist! It even uses fancy SF symbols to show heads/tails.
Dice Mode
- The picker used to select the number of dice looks better now and is no longer paired with off-centered text.
- The entire mode is no longer slightly offset to the left on larger Apple Watch displays.
Card Mode
- Same picker improvements as dice mode apply.
Marble Mode
- Same picker improvements as dice and card mode apply.
- The entire mode is also no longer slightly offset to the left on larger Apple Watch displays.
Build Numbers
macOS: 7
iOS: 18
watchOS: 6
Note: Installing the iOS app on your iPhone should theoretically (and hopefully) offer you the option to install the watchOS app onto your paired Apple Watch.
