v3.3.0: Hotfix For Uh... The App Opening
Hey uh, what's with the new name?
TL;DR, Apple kinda screwed me over with RNGTool. You can read all about what happened on my blog here.
What's new
Not a whole lot because things got weird with this release. The primary purpose of me releasing v3.3.0 here is to fix the issue with code signing on macOS, where all previous versions of RNGTool that were properly notarized will no longer launch. There's at least one new thing though!
iOS/macOS
- Added a new card dealer mode! This mode allows you to deal a set number of cards to multiple hands, and then add more cards from there. You can play blackjack with it if you really want!
- The app can actually be opened on macOS again. Hooray!
Build Numbers
macOS: 208
iOS: 90
watchOS: 90
Important Note
The recommended way to install the iOS version of RNGTool is now the App Store, rather than by sideloading the IPA. For macOS, you can choose between the App Store and the releases here as you please, since they're functionally identical.
As of 2/17, only RNGadget for iOS and watchOS is available on the App Store. You must use the macOS release provided here for the time being until this situation is sorted out.
v3.2.0: Suit Support
What's new
Card suits are finally here! Just don't ask how long I spent making the cards.
iOS/macOS/watchOS
- Card mode now simulates a standard 52-card deck for each hand drawn, meaning you'll get a realistic hand of cards, including suits! No more impossible 7 Ace hands with boring suit-less cards. These new cards also just look a bit better overall, likely because I spent a total of about 8 hours editing them and redesigning them all by hand multiple times. These were awful to make. But I love them!
- With the addition of card suits, card mode now saves the suit of each cards drawn to your history in addition to its value. (For example, "A
♠️ ")
- With the addition of card suits, card mode now saves the suit of each cards drawn to your history in addition to its value. (For example, "A
- The per-mode options, such as the number of dice in dice mode or the maximum and minimum numbers in number mode, are now the same width as the generate and reset buttons below them, which makes everything feel a little more consistent.
- Lots of other behind-the-scenes changes have been made to make maintaining RNGTool's interface a little easier on me.
- A lot of the formatting for the buttons was still located in the files using the buttons, rather than in the button's style. Most of this has been fixed, so a lot less code needs to be duplicated.
- Buttons now can have effects, like reacting to being clicked or tapped on iOS and macOS, or appearing greyed out when disabled on macOS.
- The buttons are now compatible with tvOS and support focus animations. This is definitely not foreshadowing a tvOS port of RNGTool or anything.
iOS
- History has been redesigned to look more like the table used in the macOS version of RNGTool, with rounded alternating-color rows and left-aligned text. This also means that multi-line results will display in your history properly, which may have previously been an issue on some smaller devices, or devices set to use a larger font size. I can't believe I had to do this manually, but tables on iOS will not display their headings or more than the first column, so they're basically useless.
- Added a fancy new dark icon, so that RNGTool will no longer stick out when using the dark icon style on iOS 18+. This also means that tinting will look more natural, as the dark icon will be tinted instead of the light one.
watchOS
- Fixed a bug where in number mode where setting the minimum number to a value higher than the maximum number would crash the app.
- Dice mode now supports rolling 3 dice rather than 2. I'm not really sure why it was capped at 2, because marble mode has always allowed 3 marbles. Justice has finally been restored.
Build Numbers
macOS: 207
iOS: 4
watchOS: 4
Important Note
The recommended way to install the iOS version of RNGTool is now the App Store, rather than by sideloading the IPA. For macOS, you can choose between the App Store and the releases here as you please, since they're functionally identical.
v3.1.0: Bugfixes and Consistency Improvements
What's new
Now that RNGTool is on the App Store, I've been able to get a lot more feedback. That also means more bugs have been found!
macOS/iOS/watchOS
- Huge consistency improvements! The placement of the controls at the bottom of each mode is a lot more consistent between modes now.
- To keep it simple, the controls now reserve a fixed amount of space and the content above them is set to occupy as much of the remaining screen space as possible. This means that the controls will always be spaced the same and sit the same distance from the bottom of the screen/window.
- You can no longer spam the generate button in any mode. This was the cause of a whole bunch of issues, and could eventually cause the app to crash if you spammed it too much.
- The real fix is applied internally, but this change is also shown to the user by visually disabling the generate button and any options while the generator is running.
- Pressing the reset button while a generator is running will now properly kill it and reset, even if an animation is currently playing.
- All modes now have an "i" button in the top right that will display some basic information about what the mode is and how to use it. On iOS, this includes a note about shaking your device in supported modes.
- The history screen now has a trash button in the top right that allows you to clear your history without needing to restart the app.
- The generate buttons are no longer slightly shorter than the reset buttons.
iOS
- A "Done" button has been added to the keyboard in number mode and in settings so that the keyboard can always be dismissed.
- The controls will now slide up and force the number to shrink when the keyboard is open in number mode.
- This allows you to still access everything with the keyboard open, and makes it possible to actually use number mode with custom values on smaller phones such as the iPhone 8 or SE.
- The reset buttons will no longer clip with the bottom of the screen in some modes under certain conditions.
Build Numbers
macOS: 203 (reverted back to old build number system due to App Store Connect issue)
iOS: 5
watchOS: 3
Important Note
The recommended way to install the iOS version of RNGTool is now the App Store, rather than by sideloading the IPA. For macOS, you can choose between the App Store and the releases here as you please, since they're functionally identical.
v3.0.1: Sign-on Bonus
What's new
Thanks to the generosity of @nythepegasus, RNGTool is now notarized and published on the App Store by SideStore, LLC! That means no more sideloading is required on iOS/Apple Watch, and Gatekeeper won't get quite as worked up when you run the app on macOS. It's good news for everyone!
This release is light on actual changes, and only makes some minor adjustments to the about screen to prepare for the initial App Store release. You can expect more feature updates in the near future, however!
iOS/iPadOS/watchOS
The about screen now primarily references and links to myself (NinjaCheetah) rather than NCX Programming, as the project is really more my thing and I'm the sole developer anyway. Sorry to the other NCX Programming members, none of which do Apple dev.
Build Numbers
macOS: 8
iOS: 19
watchOS: 6
Important Note
The recommended way to install the iOS version of RNGTool is now the App Store, rather than by sideloading the IPA. For macOS, you can choose between the App Store and the releases here as you please, since they're functionally identical.
v3.0.0: The Big Redesign
What's new
A lot. Apologies in advance for anything I forget, because this is going to be one hell of a changelog 😅
macOS
General
- The update checking code has been improved, meaning that the build number no longer needs to be part of the GitHub release tag. This was a necessary change because the build number shouldn't be infinitely incremented; the number is meant to be reset to 1 each time that a new version enters development (also they never lined up with the iOS/watchOS build numbers anyway, so they were confusing).
- Replaced "Internet Settings" with "General" in the settings window.
- Toggles for generator animations have been removed from each mode's settings and are instead unified into one "Play animations in supported modes" toggle under General.
- As a result, dice and marble modes no longer have dedicated settings pages, as their only option was to enable animations.
- Number and coin modes now support SceneStorage, meaning that their values will be retained while the app is launched, even if you switch to a different mode.
- The sidebar has been redesigned to look less bad and also to incorporate an SF symbol representing each mode.
- The separate history window has been removed, and your generator history can instead be access using the sidebar.
- The history view now takes advantage of a real life macOS table instead of two lists glued together (thanks, macOS Monterey!).
- All modes have been entirely redesigned to have clearer controls and to occupy more of the window's space, so your numbers won't feel quite as lonely anymore.
- The generate and reset buttons have been enlarged across all modes and are no longer exclusively suitable for ants.
- All modes now have a dedicated generate button, because sometimes you don't want to have to touch the dice directly.
Number Mode
- The maximum and minimum text fields are now always exposed, because hiding them away seemed a bit silly when there was so much open space.
New Mode: Coin Mode
- You can finally flip a coin from the convenience of your RNGTool!
- Supports up to 100 coin flips in one go.
Dice Mode
- You can now roll up to 18 dice, because you need something for your fancy M4 Max to do.
Card Mode
- You can now roll up to 12 cards. I don't know if any card game has you draw specifically 12 cards, but I felt like this made better use of the screen space.
Marble Mode
- You can now roll up to 18 marbles, because they're the same size as dice so if my dice can do it then why can't my marbles.
- The entire space of the marble is now clickable. Previously you needed to hit either the outer circle or the letter, because the visual empty space inside of the marble wasn't actually part of the marble.
iOS (iPadOS too!)
General
- The title on the main menu now proudly proclaims "RNGTool" instead of "Home".
- The "Interface" settings category has been renamed to "General" and has been moved to the top of the settings screen.
- Toggles for generator animations have been removed from each mode's settings and are instead unified into one "Play animations in supported modes" toggle under General.
- As a result, dice and marble modes no longer have dedicated settings sections, as their only option was to enable animations.
- The "Credits" section of the About RNGTool page has been removed, as it was mostly unnecessary and contained credits not relevant to RNGTool.
- The copyright year now extends to the current year instead of just specifying 2022.
- I added a credit for myself at the bottom and there's nothing you can do about it.
- Advanced settings is now a proper settings page rather than a sheet, which resolves an issue on iPad where it would be dismissed at inopportune times.
- All modes have been entirely redesigned to have clearer controls and to occupy more of the screen space, so you can finally justify the cost of your M4 iPad Pro.
- Modes no longer inappropriately use scroll views, so you can't scroll through a page of nothingness anymore.
- The generate and reset buttons have been enlarged across all modes and no longer look like they're trying to hide from RNGTool's terrifying former design.
- All modes now have a dedicated generate button, because sometimes you don't want to have to handle the marbles if someone else has had their hands all over them. That's gross.
Number Mode
- The maximum and minimum text fields are now always exposed, because hiding them away seemed a bit silly when there was so much open space.
- There's now a super fancy animation that plays when you generate a number, though it's only supported on iOS 16+. Sorry iOS 15 users. iOS 17+ users get a slightly cooler animation that changes based on whether the new number was greater than or less than the previous one.
New Mode: Coin Mode
- You can finally flip a coin from the convenience of your RNGTool!
- Supports up to 50 coin flips in one go, with a charming haptic tap for each one.
Dice Mode
- The dice now wrap quite nicely, so you now only get 3 per row.
- As a result, I could fit 3 extra dice in! Wow! That's a total of 9!
- You can now shake your device to roll! This feature is sure to amaze your friends. (This feature can be disabled using the "Shake your device to generate in supported models" toggle in general settings.)
Card Mode
- The cards are now above the controls, because I felt like it was really weird that it was the only mode where the content was below the controls.
Marble Mode
- By using the same dark magic as dice mode, I've enabled wrapping and increased the maximum to 9 for marbles as well.
- The entire space of the marble is now tappable. Previously you needed to hit either the outer circle or the letter, because the visual empty space inside of the marble wasn't actually part of the marble. This might not have been a huge deal on iPhone, but on iPad you could manage to miss the actual marble.
- Also using the same dark magic as dice mode, device shaking! You can now shake your device to roll marbles. (This feature can also be disabled using the "Shake your device to generate in supported models" toggle in general settings.)
watchOS
General
- All input fields now use my new and improved custom keyboard, which allows for much easier input than trying to use the system keyboard to type numbers.
- Most settings-related changes from iOS apply here.
- Switched to the update method of showing alerts, which has an X in the corner and one button instead of two buttons you have to scroll through.
- Poor watchOS couldn't get quite the same redesign, but I still love it.
New Mode: Coin Mode
- Flip a coin, right from your wrist! It even uses fancy SF symbols to show heads/tails.
Dice Mode
- The picker used to select the number of dice looks better now and is no longer paired with off-centered text.
- The entire mode is no longer slightly offset to the left on larger Apple Watch displays.
Card Mode
- Same picker improvements as dice mode apply.
Marble Mode
- Same picker improvements as dice and card mode apply.
- The entire mode is also no longer slightly offset to the left on larger Apple Watch displays.
Build Numbers

iOS: 18

watchOS
- All modes are available
- Number mode currently only supports the default range of 0 to 100, unless you edit the defaults (which is currently inconvenient on Apple Watch)
- Supports rolling up to 2 dice and drawing up to 3 cards
Overall, the UI is much easier to interact with on iOS now, which was heavily influenced by the cut back watchOS UI. All in all, I think these new features were worth the 2+ month development time.
