Corvus Capture v0.1.0

@NYBaywatch NYBaywatch released this 03 Sep 16:34

Corvus Capture is a lightweight Windows 11 tray screenshot utility, written in Rust, that
saves hotkey-to-file with zero friction — no dialogs, no clipboard-first detour, files just
appear with auto-numbered names in the folder you configured.

What's in v0.1.0

  • System tray icon with a right-click menu (Settings, Open capture folder, About, Exit),
left-click to open Settings, and single-instance enforcement
  • Global hotkeys F9 (fullscreen), Ctrl+F9 (active window), Shift+F9 (region select),
and Alt+F9 (Settings), each with per-hotkey conflict notification so a single failed
    registration never disables the rest
  • Fullscreen capture of the monitor under the cursor, pixel-accurate on multi-monitor and
    mixed-DPI setups (Per-Monitor V2 DPI awareness)
  • Active-window capture via GetForegroundWindow + DWM extended frame bounds, avoiding the
invisible drop-shadow border included by the raw window rect
  • Region-selection overlay on a frozen, ~40% dimmed screen with drag-to-select, 8 resize
handles, interior move, live pixel-dimension readout, and confirm/cancel via
    hotkey/Enter/double-click or Esc/outside click
  • Async save pipeline: file numbers reserved synchronously (race-safe under rapid-fire
captures), encoding on a background thread, atomic .tmp-then-rename writes, and a
skip-never-overwrite numbering scheme where deleted numbers are never reused
  • Multiple output formats — PNG, JPG (quality slider, 50-100), BMP, and lossless WebP
  • Optional clipboard copy, optional save-confirmation toast, and optional shutter sound on
    every capture
  • Settings window (raw Win32): base filename, save folder picker, format dropdown, JPG
quality slider (JPG only), toast/clipboard/shutter toggles, and Start with Windows — every
change applies instantly to config.json, no restart required
  • Start with Windows via a self-healing, quoted HKCU Run key registration that survives
    moving the exe
  • Settings UI polish: window position memory, dark/light theme following the OS setting
live, a Done button, and a restyled top-center translucent save toast
  • Embedded branding: crow tray icon, circular startup splash, and full VERSIONINFO/icon
resource embedding in the shipped exe

Footprint

  • Exe size: 1.13 MB (1,182,720 bytes) — well under the 5 MB budget
  • Idle RAM: 1.42 MB (private working set, settled 65s+ idle) — well under the 10 MB budget
  • Idle CPU: 0.00%

Install

Corvus Capture ships as a single portable exe — no installer. Download
CorvusCapture.exe, put it anywhere you like, and run it. It lives in the system tray;
right-click for the menu, or use the hotkeys above. There is nothing to uninstall beyond
deleting the file (and, if you enabled Start with Windows, unchecking that setting first).

Verify the download

Before running the exe, verify it matches the hash published with this release:

certutil -hashfile CorvusCapture.exe SHA256

Compare the output against:

FA242C711F4BCDEE802966F371AF2675AF3C8745F0772C655E61CBBF24365F63

The same hash is also published in the attached SHA256SUMS.txt asset, in the standard
<hash> CorvusCapture.exe format used by certutil/sha256sum-style verification.

Code Signing & Windows SmartScreen

This binary is code-signed via Azure Trusted Signing (signer: Joseph Fago, Newark, NJ, US) —
right-click the exe → Properties → Digital Signatures to verify. Because the release is new and
low-download-volume, Windows may still show a blue "Windows protected your PC" SmartScreen
prompt the first time you run it while signer reputation builds. After verifying the checksum
and/or signature above, you can proceed: click More info, then Run anyway.

Requirements

Windows 11 x64.
